Self-Exercise Therapy

2017.11.19 11:20

About Self-Exercise Therapy:

Self-exercise therapy awakens the latent ability of the body through motion, sensation and extended imagination.

By way of this therapy, one can carry out self-exercise for a stiff neck, backache, neck pain and chronic fatigue.

In the session, we will focus our awareness on the 5 different directions of motion of our torso (pelvis and ribs); the arch, curve, stretch, shrink and spiral, which are all concepts of Aikido. By applying these 5 different motions, reasonable and efficient movement can be achieved. In addition, we will practice working on the brain and neural circuits which are ideas of the Feldenkrais Method. This reactivates the discovery experience of fresh sensation and helps spread signals of freedom and fun through the body and mind.

These movement exercises help prevent injuries, get over pain and help grounding by releasing the body from unnecessary effort and tension. Its purpose is to reset the original movements of the torso and limbs.

Benefits:

Self-exercise therapy increases comfort in your work life as well as in your daily life.

• Daily activities such as carrying heavy bags, sitting for long periods of time or

climbing up and down stairs will become less difficult and less painful

• Relieve chronic pain such as shoulder stiffness and lower back pain

• Relieve chronic fatigue

• Free yourself from chronic strain

• Regain an energetic body

• Improve sports techniques

The Aims of Self-Exercise Therapy:

The important thing is to release the imagination and mind. This therapy overturns our "common sense" that we have decided upon and the exercise helps to release our

bodies and minds from the patterns that we have followed in the past. Let your body move honestly in whichever way the mind wishes it to, even if it is different from common sense. Accept yourself and obediently do what the heart wants.

Always focus on the value of our senses and our imagination. By strengthening the

connection between imagination and the body while training the body's senses, injuries can be prevented and overcome.

We acquire unconscious tensions in various parts of body by psychogenic memories. The same pains will continue if you keep

repeating the same movement patterns as before. Therefore, it is important to note that movement patterns can be changed.

Fostering the energy to generate imagination by largely moving the pelvis and moving the ribs boosts flexibility in the spine, which in turn helps flexible thinking.

By fostering a strong sense of body awareness by ourselves, we can create an energetic life. Your life is independent of others.

As you did when you were a baby, take time to experience the development process, step by step. Each process contains important

elements to advance to the next step and to affect the functioning of the body that has grown. The deepest wisdom is inherent in a

series of movements that are seemingly simple and easy to do.

''The same pain will stay on forever if you keep repeating the same patterns of motions; how you walk and how you think. We can change the brain's pattern for movement by self-exercise".

I have never gone back to have massage and osteopathy treatment to overcome injuries.

Why did I start doing ‘Self-Exercise’?

In 2009, I damaged the meniscus in my right knee and had surgery. Despite a lot of rehabilitation, I still felt discomfort in my knee even half a year after surgery and it hurt when I walked.

For many years before this operation, I had taken many dance classes, rehearsed a lot, and was treated and massaged by an

osteopath, which cost a lot of time and money.

But I couldn’t use my torso's natural flexibility, I couldn’t listen to anyone's voice, couldn't open my mind, and couldn't notice what my heart was

honestly looking for.

For a long time, my work was not working, because my brain couldn't think straightly about what my life wanted.

Since the pain continued, an MRI was taken again at the hospital and I got an explanation that the damage was getting worse and that I had to undergo surgery again to be relieved from the pain.

I decided to have the second operation, but I couldn't trust my decision. Would I always repeat the same thing this way?

At that time, my friend who was a Feldenkrais Method practitioner taught me:

''The same pain will stay on forever if you keep repeating the same patterns of motions; how you walk and how you think. We can change the brain's pattern for movement by self-exercise".

Based on his advice, I decided to cancel my second operation and to

overcome my injuries by focusing on motion and the brain system to change the pattern of movement by self-exercise. That has

increased my experiences of awareness of body and change of thought. Since then, I have never gone back to have massage and oste-opathy treatment to overcome injuries.

As a result, I have been working as a dancer even up till now, and my body has moved better than even before that injury. Flexibility has also improved, enriching the expression. I have also become aware of what I really want in my life, and have been able to realize it.

Fast results?

It takes some time for the brain's patterns to change. It should also be highlighted, that it is important to practice the therapy at home as part of your daily life. First, notice your patterns in everyday life. Notice your habits. Through your awareness of your habits, you will be able to begin to overturn your previous common sense. Movement practice will begin to present results across a wide spectrum.

Also, notice your daily movements yourself and a gradual change will be noticed.
