BORROWとLENDの使いわけ

Many students have trouble with “borrow” (借りる) and “lend” (貸す)。　It`s a little confusing but a simple explanation should make it clear how to use these words.　　最初はちょっと使い分けにくいかもしれないけど練習したら正確に使えるようになれるでしょう・・・。

When you want to borrow something use the subject “I” and the verb “borrow.” (何かを借りたいときに”I”の主語にして、動詞の”borrow”を使います。)　

▼For example

・I want to borrow your car. 車を使わせてほしい

・I want to borrow your phone. 電話借りたい

Usually we use this question form: (Could I borrow your…?)

ふだん私達はCould I borrow your…?のフレーズを使います。

▼For example

・Could I borrow your glasses? めがねを借りてもいいですか?

・Could I borrow your hat? 帽子を借りてもいい?

When you want to borrow something you can also use the verb “lend” but the subject changes from “I” to “You”! 

何かを借りたい時、”lend”（貸す）を使うこともできます。ただし、主語が”I”から”You”にかわります。これは大事なポイントです!

▼For example

・Could you lend me a pen? ペン貸して

・Could you lend me a blanket? 毛布を貸してください

・Could you lend me some money? お金貸してくれる?

日本語だと「お金借りてもいい？」って言うかもしれないですね。英語でも “Could you lend me some money“と“Could I borrow some money?”どちらを使っても大丈夫ですが、英語の場合は主語が大事だから “you lend me 物” と “I borrow 物”のパターンをよく覚えた方がいいです。
