Telecoms with Artificial Intelligence

2022.09.30 15:21

Many people think of applications like Siri on their mobile devices, but AI is also playing an increasingly central role in the telecoms world. Some of the most prominent applications are already coming out of the telco space - customer service representatives for automated advice, self-service options, and back-office operations that can be streamlined through automation to free up valuable resources.

The pandemic in 2020 put a lot of global telecommunications service providers in a tight spot. For example, sending out staff to handle the increased bandwidth needs would have been difficult and expensive since so many areas were affected. Telecommunication companies like Verizon had to overcome this challenge by enabling their employees to work from home, which was made possible when the technology was available to support it.

With a multitude of tasks that a workforce can accomplish more efficiently using AI capabilities, it is no wonder telecommunications providers are going all-in on this movement. It makes sense for them because it will, in the long term, allow them to get rid of tedious tasks that are not critical for business success.

From an investment standpoint, it makes sense too. Organizations like AT&T and Verizon will invest $20 billion and $17 billion respectively to roll out 5G networks - a move that could potentially open up massive new markets for the companies and provide more opportunities for AI-driven solutions.
