植物選び中の知らない人との会話｜Conversation with a stranger while selecting plants.

　最近は、レンタサイクルにハマっていて、夕方の日課になってきました。20分くらい、車も人も少ない湾岸の道を滑走するのが快感です。そして、いつもの日課の夜のジムで30分のウォーキングと筋トレをして、温泉に入る。サイクリングをすると、より深い眠りになると感じています。

　I've recently fallen into renting a bike and it's become part of my evening routine and it' s a pleasure to glide along the bay roads for 20 minutes or so, with few cars or people. Then I do my usual routine of 30 minutes of walking and strength training at the gym in the evening, and then I go to the spa. I find that cycling helps me sleep more deeply.

　昨日は、一つ先の駅までは電車で行き、そこから4キロ先の場所へ行くルートにしました。東京湾エリアの道は新しく、走りやすいです。途中、長い橋を渡りながら見える、都会の景色を背景にしたサンセットは、心を癒してくれます。

　Yesterday, I took a route that took me to a train station one station away from my house and then to a location four kilometers away. The roads in the Tokyo Bay area are new and easy to drive on. On the way, the sunset against the background of the urban landscape, seen while crossing long bridges, is soothing.

　自転車を止めて、よく行くホームセンターへ。夏に買った観葉植物が季節の終わりを告げたので、新しいものを探していました。

　I parked my bike and went to a home center that I often visit. The houseplants I bought in the summer had come to the end of their season and I was looking for new ones.

　ホームセンターに入り、丸い葉のものもと思いながら見ていると、私の隣にたまたまいたマダムが突然話しかけてきました。「すみません」とも言わずに。私は知らない人と会話することは慣れているので、そのままスッと話を続けました。

　I went into a home center and was looking at some cute round-leafed, thinking they were nice when suddenly a madam who happened to be next to me spoke to me. She didn't even say, "Excuse me". I am used to talking to strangers, so I just carried on talking to her.

「この植物の名前何かしら？これだけは書いていないのよね」

"What's the name of this plant?' It doesn't say this one."

「ああ、今調べますよ。花の名前がわかるアプリを持っているので」

"Oh, I'll look it up now. 'I have an app that can find out the name of the flower."

そして、アプリを使って写真を撮ると、その観葉植物の名前が出てきました。

And when I took a picture using the app, the name of that houseplant came up.

「ピレアですね。『肥料不足』ってでてます。たしかに、ちょっと葉が黄色いところがありますね」

"It's a Pilea, isn't it? It says, "lack of fertilizer". It's true, the leaves are a bit yellow in places."

「店員さんを呼ぼうと思ったんだけど、良かったわ。そのアプリ凄いわね、肥料不足とかもわかるの？」

"I was going to call the shop staff but thank goodness. That app is great, does it tell us if there's a lack of fertilizer?"

「そうみたいですね。新しくついた機能なのかな」

"Yes, it seems to. Is that a new function?"

「なんていうアプリ？」

”What's the app called?”

「Picture Thisです。有料アプリですけど、植物が好きな人にはいいですよ」

"Picture This. It's a paid app, but it's good if you like plants."

「メモしておくわ」

"I'll make a note of it."

そう言って、たくさんのメモが書かれた紙がいつのまにやら出てきて、メモされていました。

She said, and a piece of paper with many notes on it always came out and was jotted down.

「私、植物を枯らしてしまうことがあるのよ。以前に買ったこれなんだけど。茎がポロっと取れてしまって」

"I sometimes let my plants die. I bought this one before. The stem just fell off."

そう言って、写真を見せてくれました。

She showed me a picture of it.

「ああ、これ私も持ってました。たしかに、これ、茎がポロっと切れますよね。私もダメになりました」

"Oh, I had this one, too. It's true, the stalks of these plants do fall off, don't they? It ruined mine, too."

「この植物は、値段が高い方だけど、きっと長持ちするかしらね」

"This plant is more expensive, so I hope it will last living.

「私もはじめてみましたけど、ハートの形がかわいいですね」

"I've never seen it before, it has a cute heart shape."

アプリで写真を撮る。

I took a photo with the app.

「フィロデンドロン・グラジエラエというみたいですよ。コンディションは良好ですね。葉がハートで、運気もアップしそうですしね。丸い葉もいいですから、ピレアもいいですね」

"It looks like it's called Philodendron grazielae. It's in good condition. The heart-shaped leaves are also good for luck. Round leaves are nice, and so is Pilea."

「そうなのよね、ハートとか丸い葉は、風水的にもいいのよね！」

"Yes, hearts and round leaves are good for luck, too!"

「なんか、私もこれほしいかも。ではほかのところも見てきますね！」

"I think I'd like one of these, too. I'll go and look at the other places, too!"

　そしてマダムは、フィロデンドロン・グラジエラエに決めたようです。まるで、私が販売接客していたようですね。アパレル店長だったころ、販売接客した服を欲しくなったように、私もフィロデンドロン・グラジエラエを買って帰ったのでした。(笑)

　And Madame seems to have decided on Philodendron grazielae. It was as if I had sold it to her. I also bought a Philodendron grazielae so that I would want the clothes I sold, when I was an apparel shop manager. (haha)
