El cuento-marco nos habla de un asceta experto en magia, quien se presenta todos los días, y por un largo periodo de tiempo, al rey Vikramasena con la acostumbrada oferta de una fruta que tiene en su interior una joya. A cambio de su regalo, el rey tiene que ayudar al asceta en un sortilegio y traerle un cadáver a un sitio preestablecido y en una noche determinada. El asceta advierte al rey que durante el recorrido con el cadáver a hombros no podrá pronunciar ni una sola palabra: de otra forma el cadáver se le escapará y tendrá que regresar por él. Sin embargo, durante el viaje, un viejo y hábil vampiro que mora en el cadáver narra al rey un cuento y, cuando acaba, pregunta algo referente a los sucesos narrados. El rey no puede dejar de resolver enigmas que se le plantean y ha de repetir su captura del cadáver. La preguntas y las respuestas son geniales y extravagantes por su contenido y harán las delicias de los aficionados al género cuentístico.
