En 1986, le psychanalyste Didier Anzieu confirmait que sa mère avait été Aimée, cette femme dont Lacan écrivit la folie dans sa thèse. Par la grâce de cette identification, des noms pouvaient sortir comme de l'ombre, des lieux, des dates venaient prendre leur place ; ainsi s'ouvrait la possibilité d'une lecture enfin critique de la seule monographie clinique jamais écrite par Lacan. L'ouvrage comporte les documents d'époque.
On y trouve aussi la correspondance Allouch/Anzieu qui accompagna l'écriture du livre. Le dernier mot revient à Anzieu en sa postface.
