L'aportació més decisiva de Víctor Català a la literatura catalana és el "drama rural", expressió que defineix les característiques essencials de la primera etapa de la seva narrativa: Drames rurals (1902), Ombrívoles (1904) i Caires vius (1907). El tret dominant del "drama rural" és possiblement la intensitat, una intensitat corprenedora, que desemboca, sovint, en una situació límit. L'autora elimina tota retòrica i se cenyeix d'una manera gairebé impassible al punt de vista dominant, que acostuma a ser el del personatge marginat pel grup social; es tracta d'una marginació sempre mancada de la més elemental humanitat, que, a vegades, arriba a ser d'una gran crueltat.
