Overview
Since the very beginning, the prefrontal areas have been involved in regulating our reactions. The neocortex receives most of the sensory data that the thalamus transmits, and it records and interprets the data. The frontal lobes work together to organize this information and the reaction it triggers. This serves as the foundation for organizing and arranging our emotional behaviors. Numerous circuits in the neocortex capture and process the information, and then through the prefrontal lobe, they coordinate a reaction.
Strong emotion is an anomaly, but the series of circumstances that enabled this decisive response has become the rule. When an emotion is present, the prefrontal lobes quickly determine which reaction is optimal by estimating its positive and negative connection. Because it has to activate more circuits, the neocortex's reaction is slower than the emergency mechanism. Since cognition comes before emotion, it is also more careful and methodical.
The neocortex is at work when we experience emotions like sadness after a defeat, excitement after a win, or hurt when we think back on someone's actions or words. Similar to the amygdala, a significant portion of emotional life vanishes if frontal lobe activity is suppressed.
