雲仙宮崎旅館は１００年近い歴史をもつ雲仙を代表する老舗旅館だ。旅館と名乗りながらも実際には客室にベッドを置くホテルであるが、伝統を尊重し創業時の名称のまま営業している。だが宮崎旅館は未来を見据えることも忘れてはいない、全面建て替えを行い２０２２年１２月にリニューアルオープンした。新しいホテル棟は日本の伝統建築・数寄屋の様式を強く意識して全体の基調色を黒と灰色とし、見る者に千利休が好んだ黒や利休鼠を想起させる。内部の照明も侘び茶の茶室のように心地よい仄暗さで、まさに陰翳礼讃の世界である。一階の庭園側の黒い屋根はミニマルかつ軽やかな数寄屋の直線美を際立たせるためにあえて軒先に雨樋をつけないこだわりをみせる。また、黒一辺倒ではなくアクセントとして要所にナチュラルな無垢材をバランス良く配し建物にモダンな明るさを与えている。そのような繊細な配慮の積み重ねにより新築されたホテル棟は数寄屋の伝統に根ざした普遍的な美とあわせて、洗練されたスタイリッシュな建築美をも獲得している。

宮崎旅館に到着しチェックインのためにエントランスからロビーに入ると正面の窓いっぱいに日本庭園が出迎えてくれる。ロビーから日本庭園がのぞめるホテルは他にもあるが、このホテルはそれだけでは終わらない。宮崎旅館の一階フロアは全面ガラス張りで、実に７９ｍもの長さで続き、そのすべてが庭に面しているのだ。窓に沿って歩を進めれば外の風景は池泉や灯籠や松など、さながら絢爛たる絵巻物のように次々と変化してゆく。４月ともなれば雲仙を代表する花・ツツジが咲きこぼれんばかりに庭を彩る。また、庭に面して長く続く屋根の軒先に雨樋をつけないことで上層階から落とされた雨水が数箇所にまとめられ窓の外で裏見の滝のように落ちることも計算された演出である。庭園の夜間ライトアップは建物上部に取り付けたライトで庭全体を柔らかい月明かりで浮かび上がらせるように照らす手法をとっている。この手法は照明器具や配線で景観が大きく損なわれている全国の日本庭園のライトアップの在り方に一石を投じたと言えるだろう。建物は全面的に建て替えられたが、庭は池の護岸や滝石組を新しく整えた以外は以前のままの設えを踏襲している。新しい建物は古い庭をできるだけ壊さないよう配慮して設計されたおかげで新しい建物と古い庭はよく調和している。また新しい池は庭を室内から眺める際には前景となるように以前よりも水面の位置を低くし州浜を設け護岸や滝の石組を目立たせている。これにより庭園の前景・中景・後景そして背後の山の借景の関係がとても明確になり以前よりもワンランクアップした庭の設えとなった上に建物との親和性も格段に増している。これは現代の新しい「庭屋一如・ていおくいちにょ」の成功例と言えるだろう。

宮崎旅館の庭内には白濁の泥の中から温泉が湧き出す「地獄」が数箇所ある他、ホテル敷地の地下にたまっている地熱を放出するための土管が所々に差し込まれ白い蒸気が噴き出している。また庭の背後の山中にある「大叫喚地獄」（宮崎旅館の源泉）からも真っ白い湯煙が力強く立ちのぼっており、それらが温泉地の庭園ならではの個性となっている。思えば平安時代の風流な都人たちは庭に塩釜を設け塩を焼き立ち昇る煙を楽しんだと言うが、それと同じように宮崎旅館の庭では立ち上る白い湯煙が庭の景物となっているのだ。また、雲仙は日本初の国立公園である。背後の山に植林などは一切なく自然のままの植生が庭園の最高の借景となっている。正確に言えば、雲仙の美しい自然は庭の借景のみならず、庭や建物を含めた宮崎旅館すべてと一つに調和していると言うべきであろう。それは京都の山や自然と美しく調和していることで知られる天龍寺や修学院離宮にも負けない素晴らしさだ。そんな最高の環境をオープンエアーで味わうためのウッドデッキのベランダが各客室に設けられているのもこのホテルの特徴の一つである。ベランダに置かれたゆったり寛げるモダンデザインのデッキチェアーに身をあずけ、鳥のさえずりに耳をかたむける時間は至福である。また、隣り合わせた８ベランダをワンユニットとして同じデッキチェアで揃え、それとは違うデッキチェアーで揃えた別のユニットと上下に組み合わせることから生み出される不規則性が、整然とテラスが並ぶホテル棟の外観から退屈を排除し建築美に大きく貢献するアクセントとなっている。

もちろんホテルの内装も美しい。スタイリッシュでありながらもどこかにミッドセンチュリーなレトロ感が漂うセメント打放しコンクリートの表面には型取り板の木目が深く残され彫刻のような陰影をたたえており、ダイニングに立ち並ぶ台形の列柱は偉大な２０世紀建築へのオマージュのようでフロント横に置かれたタリアセン、フランク・ロイド・ライトの照明とよく調和している。

ホテル棟とは別棟で新築された大浴場も外観は数寄屋的な黒を基調としている。ここには２つの露天風呂があるが、それぞれ日本庭園の手法で作られている。まずひとつめの露天は選りすぐりの青石だけを使った石組の滝からお湯が流れ落ちる贅沢な設え、もう一つは砂の枯流れを緑の苔が縁どる瀟洒な設えの枯山水だ。前者は主庭池泉の滝石組と、後者は玄関車寄せの枯山水と共通するスタイルで設えられている。男女日替わりなのでどちらの露天風呂も楽しむことができる。脱衣所の足元にも庭が見える窓が設けられているの見落とさないでほしい。それ以外にも前述したエントランスの車寄せ前には枯山水があり現代的な雑木の庭の手法をさりげなく取り入れるなど各所に美しい庭の設えらえがあり宿泊者はこの旅館に滞在中どこにいても常に庭を楽しむことができるようになっている。宮崎旅館は庭が重要なコンセプトとなっているのだ。

もちろん庭園だけではなく、温泉よし、食事よし、もてなしよし、の三拍子が揃っている。宮崎旅館は間違いなく九州で今最も泊まるべき宿の最上位にランクインしたと言えるだろう。

Unzen Miyazaki Ryokan is a long-established ryokan that represents Unzen with a history of nearly 100 years. Although it calls itself a ryokan (traditional inn), it is actually a hotel with beds in the guest rooms. Miyazaki Ryokan, which shows its commitment to tradition in this way, never neglected to look to the future, and reopened in December 2022 after undergoing a complete rebuilding construction.

Although the new hotel building is made of reinforced concrete, it is strongly conscious of the traditional Japanese Sukiya architectural style, and the basic colors of the whole are black and gray. The black roof on the garden side of the first floor is minimalistic, and in order to accentuate the beauty of the straight lines of the sukiya, the eaves are intentionally not equipped with rain gutters. In addition, rather than relying entirely on black, natural solid wood is used as an accent in a well-balanced manner to eliminate the dark and oppressive atmosphere of the building. The hotel building, which was built with such careful attention to detail, has acquired a light and stylish architectural beauty along with the universal beauty rooted in the tradition of Sukiya.

When you arrive at the hotel and enter the lobby from the entrance, you are greeted by a Japanese garden that fills the front windows. There are other hotels where you can see a Japanese garden from the lobby, but this hotel doesn't stop there. The first floor of Miyazaki Ryokan is entirely glass-walled, extending for a length of 79 meters, all facing the garden. As you walk along the window, the scenery outside changes one after another with ponds, lanterns, pine trees, etc., just like a Japanese picture scroll. In April, flower azaleas representing Unzen color the garden. Azaleas have been known to grow naturally in the mountains of Unzen since ancient times.

Interestingly, this hotel uses spotlights installed at the top of the building to illuminate the entire garden like soft moonlight. This method has the potential to become a new model for how to light up Japanese gardens across the country, where the scenery is greatly damaged by lighting fixtures and wiring.

The building of Miyazaki Ryokan has been completely rebuilt, but the garden remains the same as before, except for the new stonework of the pond. The new building is in good harmony with the old garden, thanks to the fact that the new building was designed with care not to destroy the old garden as much as possible. Instead of renewing everything, leaving what should be preserved is an important consideration for the countless guests who have visited here over the 100 years since the establishment of the inn. Even if the building is new, as long as the garden is there, the memories of the people who once stayed will remain there.

In the garden of Miyazaki Ryokan, there are several “hells” where hot springs bubble up from cloudy mud, and clay pipes are inserted here and there to release geothermal heat from the hotel grounds and underground, and white steam is gushing out. In addition, pure white steam rises strongly from Daikyokan Jigoku (the source of Miyazaki Ryokan) in the mountains behind the garden, giving the garden a unique character unique to a hot spring resort. If you think about it, it is said that the elegant people of the Heian period set up salt boilers in their gardens and enjoyed the smoke rising from the grilled salt. is.

Unzen is Japan's first national park. There is no artificial planting on the mountain behind the garden, and the natural vegetation is the best borrowed scenery.

To be precise, it should be said that the beautiful nature of Unzen and the buildings and gardens of Miyazaki Ryokan are all in harmony. It is as beautiful as Kyoto's Tenryu-ji Temple and Shugakuin Imperial Villa, which are famous for their beautiful harmony with nature. The exposed cement concrete surface is stylish yet has a nostalgic mid-century feel to it, and the deep wood grain of the molding board is left like a sculpture to create shadows. It seems to be in good harmony with the Frank Lloyd Wright lighting placed on the side of the front.

The large public bath, which was newly built in a separate building from the hotel building, also has a sukiya-style black exterior. There are two open-air baths here, each of which was created using the technique of a Japanese garden. The first open-air bath is a luxurious setting where hot water flows down from a stonework waterfall using only selected green schist, and the other is an elegant Karesansui setting where green moss frames the dried sand. The former is set up in the same style as the waterfall and stone arrangement of the main garden pond, and the latter is the dry landscape garden at the entrance carriage porch. The men's and women's open-air baths change daily, so you can enjoy both open-air baths. There is also a window overlooking the garden at the foot of the dressing room, so don't miss it.

In the Karesansui (dry landscape) at the entrance mentioned above, the technique of "grove of trees" is adopted, and casual modernity is not forgotten. In addition, there are beautiful gardens in various places, and guests can always enjoy the gardens during their stay. The Japanese garden is an important concept for Miyazaki Ryokan.

Of course, in addition to the garden, this hotel has three important elements: good hot springs, good food, and good hospitality. Miyazaki Ryokan is undoubtedly ranked as one of the most must-stay hotels in Kyushu.
