「帆足本家」大分県大分市

大分市戸次地区は、日向街道沿いに昔の面影を遺す町並みが残され、現在は古い町家を利用したカフェや、エコロジーな食品店が並んでいる。その中核的存在が「帆足本家」だ。

帆足本家は４００年続く旧家で酒造業で財を成しこの地域の経済と文化の中心だった。保存され自由に見学できる酒蔵などの巨大建造物群は圧巻。帆足家醸造の銘酒「富春」の名をとった母屋「富春館」は慶応元年1863年の建築で式台玄関を備えた格式高い武家の建築様式を取り入れている。母屋の他、約2000坪の敷地には江戸後期から昭和初期にかけて建てられた歴史的建造物が立ち並んでいる。それらはギャラリー・レストラン・和菓子店などとして活用されている。日向街道沿いの表門から敷地に入ると前庭がある。足元の敷石に沿って母屋の式台玄関に向かうと左横に主庭へ出入りするための中門がある。主庭には誰でも入り自由に散策できる。主庭は基本的に池泉回遊式庭園で江戸後期から明治大正時代にかけて整備されたと思われる。この庭は母屋の本座敷から眺めるための座鑑式庭園でもあり母屋手前に瓢箪型を変形させた池を掘り中央に八つ橋をかけている。池の左背景には築山がそびえている。この築山はいかにも文人好みの古代中国の深山幽谷の趣を持ち威容を誇る。庭園全体は平庭だが、池のある下段と、池の背後の一段高い上段にわかれ、一種のステップガーデンとなっている。池の背後が一段高いため池の対岸の護岸石組は手前より高く組まれ立体的でドラマチックな景観は見る者を飽きさせない。上段は退屈になりがちな広い平庭に飛び石が縫うように列をなしアクセントとなっている。

"Hoashi Honke" Oita City, Oita Prefecture

In the Hetsugi district of Oita City, along the Hyuga Highway, the old townscape remains, and now there are cafés in old townhouses and local organic food stores. At its core is Hoashi Honke.

Hoashi Honke is an old family with a history of 400 years and made a fortune in the sake brewing industry. The main building, Fushunkan, which takes the name of Hoashi family brewed sake, Fushun, was built in 1863 in the first year of the Keio era and incorporates the architectural style of a prestigious samurai family with a Shikidai entrance. The site of about 6,600 square meters is lined with historical buildings built from the late Edo period to the early Showa period. They are used as galleries, restaurants, and Japanese sweets shops. There is a front garden when you enter the site from the front gate along the Hyuga Highway. If you walk along the paving stones to the shikidai entrance of the main house, you will find the middle gate on the left side for entering and exiting the main garden.

Anyone can enter the main garden and take a walk freely. The main garden is basically a Chisenkaiyu-shiki garden where you can walk along the path around the pond and enjoy the changing scenery. This garden is also a Zakanshiki garden that can be viewed from the main building's tatami room, and a gourd-shaped pond is dug in front of the main building and a Yatsu Bridge is placed in the center.

Tsukiyama rises behind the pond on the left. This artificial hill is a rocky mountain made up of many stones, and boasts a majestic appearance with the atmosphere of a deep mountain and secluded valley during the ancient Chinese dynasty. The entire garden is a flat garden, but it is divided into a lower level with a pond and an upper level behind the pond, making it a kind of step garden. Because the back of the pond is one step higher, the rock revetment on the opposite bank of the pond is higher than the front, creating a three-dimensional and dramatic landscape that keeps the viewer from getting bored. The upper floor is accented by rows of stepping stones that weave in a wide flat garden that tends to be boring.
