The Fun of Morning Market

I had underestimated the morning market in Hachinohe. I thought it was just a place to make a rice bowl outside the market, but it turns out that the market attracts several tens of thousands of people at 300 stalls. Moreover, it is said that the stalls are cleared out by 9:00 a.m. Indeed, by 5:00 a.m., the quay at the fishing port was already full of cars and people. There are a variety of stalls offering elegant coffee and bread, assorted local sashimi, steamed meat buns, freshly picked vegetables, and knick-knacks. There is already a long line of people waiting for the popular food stalls offering baked xiaolongbao and oden. It seems to be an everyday scene for the locals. We enjoyed hot croquettes and fried pork cutlets as we strolled around. But it would have been more fun if we had a beer in our hands at 5 p.m. -Text and illustration by Ted Sakaki
