El Chapo's son is going to America...Drug king and rich man jailed in U.S. prison

2023.09.18 03:01

Mexico's government has completed the extradition process of Ovidio Guzman (33), son of drug lord El Chapo, to the United States, according to Mexican daily newspapers including La Horada on the 17th (local time).

According to this, Mexico's Ministry of Justice handed over Guzman, who was arrested and detained in January, to the U.S. government on the 15th. "This is the latest effort to attack from all sides of the Mexican drug cartel," U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. "We will hold people accountable for the devastation of the community by fueling the opioid epidemic."

Ovidio Guzmán, nicknamed "the mouse," is considered the real power of the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel, following his father Joaquin Guzmán. In particular, in addition to existing drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin, it has recently served as a major supplier and distributor of fentanyl, which causes more than 100,000 deaths annually due to misuse and abuse in the United States. The Sinaloa Cartel is known to be responsible for about 65% of the fentanyl currently distributed in the United States.

This is the second arrest of Ovidio Guzmán.

He was arrested once in 2019 by Mexican federal police. However, members of the Sinaloa Cartel led more than 700 troops and threatened the Mexican government, signaling mass destruction of civilians, and then Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador gave in to the threat of the Sinaloa Cartel and released Guzman.

Later, on January 5, the Mexican government arrested Guzman again after a gunfight involving the military and police ahead of the North Korea-U.S. trilateral summit. According to Mexican authorities, 29 people were killed in the arrest operation, including 19 suspected drug gang members and 10 soldiers. In response to the extradition, Ovidio Guzman argued through his lawyer that "there is no reason to be sent to the United States, and my legitimate rights (if extradited) are violated," but the Mexican judiciary refused to acknowledge it.

Earlier, his father Joaquin Guzman was extradited to the United States in 2017 and sentenced to life in prison in 2019. From 1989 to 2014, he was charged with more than 17 crimes, including entering drugs through various methods, including tunnels and airplanes, distributing more than 200 tons of drugs in various parts of the United States, and inciting murder.

Currently, Joaquin Guzman is appealing for transfer to a Mexican prison, saying through his lawyer, "I have rarely seen sunlight in prison, eat bad food, and virtually have no visits."
