Los tres capítulos o "actos" que componen este libro (además del epílogo, dedicado a su posterior recepción) suponen un extenso recorrido por el teatro español del siglo XX y pretenden evidenciar con la adecuada perspectiva sus principales hitos, corrientes y claves, prestando especial atención a todos aquellos aspectos que responden a la heterogeneidad epistemológica que permite el estudio del teatro. En virtud de esta mirada plural, se abordarán realidades que no siempre han sido debidamente integradas en el discurso historiográfico del género, como la censura o el exilio, que tan radicalmente afectaron al estudio y la práctica teatrales, o la presencia y la contribución fundamental de las mujeres, siempre intentando responder al reto de lograr una visión totalizadora del hecho teatral.
