11th Flute Festival Singapore
The 11th Singapore Flute Festival has ended without a hitch. On the first day, I played E. Dohnanyi's Passcaglia Op.48. It's been a while since I've performed in front of an audience. I was nervous! Through the competition judges and the master classes, I spent the last four days mulling over the words of my teacher, WIBB. I once got very angry with WIBB. During a lesson at the Royal Academy, I was in high spirits as I got a new flute that sounded great and was good quality. But then, he got angry and said, "Why are you playing that note? Don't play all the notes!!" A good-sounding flute picks up and plays all the notes. However, he said that you need "notes that don't sound." This is related to playing a flute that is by no means good quality, such as a traverso or 5-key. A good-quality flute plays all the notes, so it's hard to understand what you're trying to express. WIBB often said, "Don't play that note." You need "thrown away sounds." He often practiced on an old Louis Lot that was purposely out of tune so that he wouldn't play any notes. The young contestants' strong performance reminded me of this. I would like to recruit an ensemble to participate next year. Japanese flutists, would you like to come with me? Singapore is a wonderful city with great hospitality and delicious food. 第11回シンガポールフルートフェスティバルが無事に終了しました。初日のE.Dohnanyi:Passcaglia Op.48 ひさしぶりに観客のみなさまをお迎えしこの曲を演奏。緊張しました！
コンテスト審査員、マスタークラスを通して、師匠であるWIBBの言葉を反芻した４日間でした。私は昔、WIBBにとても怒られたことがあります。ロイヤルアカデミーでのレッスン。性能の良い、音の良く鳴る新しいフルートを手にした私は意気揚々とレッスンに臨んだのです。すると、「おまえはどうしてその音を鳴らすんだ！？全部の音を鳴らすな！！」そう怒られてしまったのです。良く鳴るフルートはすべての音を拾い、鳴らします。ですが、「鳴らさない音」が必要だというのです。それはトラヴェルソや５keyのように決して性能が良いとはいえないフルートを扱うことに似ています。
性能の良いフルートはすべての音を鳴らすので、何を表現したいのか解らなくなってしまいます。WIBBはよく「その音は鳴らすな」と言いました。「捨てる音」が必要なのです。彼はよくすべての音を鳴らさないために、わざと調子の悪い古いルイ・ロットで練習をしていました。若いコンテスタントの皆さんの健闘する姿はこんなことを思い出させてくれました。
来年はぜひアンサンブルを募り参加したいと考えています。日本のフルーティストのみなさん、いっしょに行きませんか？シンガポールはとても親切で食べ物も美味しく、素敵な街ですよ。
