The History of Kambayashi Sanrinen

Kanbayashi Sanrinen is the name of the tea wholesaler operated by the Kanbayashi Dōan family.

The Kambayashi Dōan household is said to have been established in Uji around 1570, when Kitamura Dōetsu married Myōkyū, the elder sister of Kanbayashi Hisashige’s daughter and the sister of Hisamochi. The Kanbayashi family traces its lineage to the Seiwa Genji, descendants of Emperor Seiwa, and regards Minamoto no Hideie (Kanbayashi Rokurō) as its ancestor. They originally served the Ashikaga shogunate from their base in Kanbayashi‑gō (present‑day Ayabe City, Kyoto Prefecture). In the early 1570s, however, they were driven from their homeland by Akechi Mitsuhide, a retainer of Oda Nobunaga, and relocated to Uji. In 1577, Hisashige’s fourth son, Hisamochi, received land rights from Nobunaga, was appointed magistrate of Uji‑gō, and was ordered to present tea to Nobunaga—an event that marked the rise of the Kanbayashi family as tea masters.

The Dōan family began serving formally as tea masters from the third generation onward. From 1693 (Genroku 6), they, together with other branches of the Kanbayashi family—such as the Kanbayashi Shunshō family (whose founder was the younger brother of Myōkyū) and the Kanbayashi Sannyū family—served as Ofukuro‑ocha‑shi, preparing tea for the Tokugawa shoguns. They also supplied tea to the Okubo family of Odawara Domain, the Matsudaira family of Kameyama Domain, and Nishi Hongan‑ji Temple in Kyoto.

After the Meiji Restoration, the traditional system in which tea masters were supported by the shogunate and feudal domains came to an end. Many tea masters were forced to close or change their trade, but the Dōan family survived as tea merchants. The fifteenth head of the family, Naramichi, served as the mayor of Uji during the Taishō period and contributed greatly to the local community.

Today, the trademark rights to “Kanbayashi Sanrinen” are held by Kambayashi Hiroki, the great‑grandson of Naramichi.
