亀戸アートセンターは、ZONSHANG、ヌキ本の2組による展覧会「Ultra NUKImatic K.A.C.」を開催いたします。

ZONSHANGはヒップホップ、スケートといった70年代から続くストリートカルチャー、また、それらと親和性の高いカンフームービーや東洋的なバックグラウンドを持つモチーフの要素をサンプリングソースとしてデザインに落とし込み、主にスクリーンプリントを用いて様々な形でのアウトプットを試みている二人組のグラフィックユニットです。

2016年から活動を続けている彼らは、これまでに、ZINEやポスター、Tシャツなどのアパレル商品の他、水道工事の宣伝に使われるマグネットシートを支持体に用い、そこにヒップホップアーティストのポートレイトがスクリーンプリントされた彼らの代表作ともいえる「Ultra Magnetic Rap Card(UMRC)」を制作し、東京アートブックフェアや企画展への出展でその存在感を示してきました。

本展では「Ultra Magnetic Rap Card」の最新版として500点以上にわたるUMRCで構成される展示をメインに、これまでのUMRCの中から、厳選したデザインを「拡大」し「再生産」したスクリーンプリント作品を発表します。

ヌキ本は本や雑誌等、書籍の表紙にあるロゴやイラストを、表紙から裏表紙までまるごと１冊手で切り抜き、それを製本することで新たに生まれる「ヌキ本」という作品を制作している作家です。

「ヌキ本」はその形状だけでなく、実際にページをめくると目に飛び込んでくる書籍の中の文字やイラスト、漫画のコマたちが、作家の意図しない形でトリミングされ、そこに現れる無作為の構図の美しさや、見えそうで見えない、読めそうで読めない内容のもどかしさも込みで(鑑賞者の想像を膨らませる作用として)作品の魅力の一つとなっています。これまで発表を続ける度に「ヌキ本」の見せ方を模索し、更新してきたヌキ本が見せる新たな展開に期待が高まります。

また、以前から親交のあるZONSHANGとヌキ本は、「ヌキ本」をモチーフにしたスクリーンプリント作品の印刷をZONSHANGが担当し、これまでに企画展等で発表してきました。お互いに作家としてリスペクトしている間柄でもあるこの2組が、本展ではZONSHANGがセレクトした本を「ヌキ本」にするコラボ作品も制作しました。

過去から続く、時代時代のカルチャーをサンプリングし、オリジナルな手法を持って再構築する2組のアーティストによる「Ultra NUKImatic K.A.C.」、ぜひご高覧ください。

Zonshang is a graphic unit that incorporates elements from street culture, including hip-hop and skateboarding from the 1970s, as well as motifs influenced by kung fu movies and Eastern backgrounds, into their designs. They primarily use screen printing to produce various forms of output. Active since 2016, they have created notable works like the "Ultra Magnetic Rap Card (UMRC)," which features portraits of hip-hop artists printed on magnetic sheets used for advertising sewer construction. Their presence has been highlighted at events such as the Tokyo Art Book Fair and various curated exhibitions. This exhibition will feature the latest version of the UMRC, consisting of over 500 pieces, along with screen-printed works that showcase selected designs from previous UMRCs, enlarged and reproduced.

Nukibon is an artist known for creating "Nukibon" works by cutting out entire books or magazines, from the cover to the back cover, by hand, and then rebinding them. The "Nukibon" pieces not only have a unique physical form but also present the text, illustrations, and comic panels from the original books in a way that trims and reconfigures them into new, random compositions. This approach highlights the beauty of randomness and the intrigue of content that is partially visible or legible, enhancing the viewer's imagination and engagement with the work. Nuki-bon continues to evolve and update its approach with each presentation.

Previously, Zonshang and Nukibon, who have had longstanding mutual respect as artists, collaborated on screen-printed works based on "Nukibon." For this exhibition, Zonshang has selected books to be transformed into "Nukibon" in a new collaborative project.

The "Ultra NUKImatic K.A.C." exhibition, featuring these two groups' unique approaches to sampling and reconstructing cultural elements with original methods, is an exciting opportunity to view their innovative works.

◾️ ヌキ本

1988年長野県生まれ。古本の表紙のタイトルやイラストなどのアウトラインをなぞりながら、その本まるごと1冊切りヌイた「ヌキ本」を制作。1枚1枚カッターで切りヌキ、再度製本している。近年は大判のシルクスクリーンプリント作品も制作するなどヌキ本の可能性を追求している。

Born in 1988 in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. She traces the outline of the title and illustrations on the cover of a used book and cuts out the entire book to create a “nuki-bon. In recent years, She has been pursuing the possibilities of nuki books, including the production of large silkscreen prints.
