「深田氏庭園」鳥取県

鎌倉時代作庭の山陰最古の池泉庭園。古代中国・道教に基づく蓬莱式庭園で、かっては深田氏の書院から眺める座鑑式の庭園だった。現在は書院が失われたためその後建てられた腰掛待合のような建物から鑑賞させてもらえる。鎌倉時代作庭と言っても全てがそのままという訳ではなく、庭園手前の出雲流の飛び石などは江戸時代以降のもので時代による改変も見られる。とはいえ、向かって右手の築山中腹に据えられたオーストラリア大陸のような形をした肌色の凝灰岩は同時期の京都「南禅院庭園」の石と酷似しており、この庭が鎌倉時代作庭であることを雄弁に物語っている。同じ質感を持つ恐竜の角のように並び立つに荒々しい凝灰岩の三尊石も鎌倉時代のものと見て間違いないだろう。このようにラフな凝灰岩を多用しているため庭の印象は洗練や雅やかさとは対極の男性的で勇ましいものとなっている。

この庭のもう一つの大きな特徴は池に浮かぶ鶴島と亀島だ。どちらの島も誰が見てもそれとわかる具象性に富んでいる。特に鶴島は優美な鶴というより勇壮な鷹にみえる。凝灰岩の鋭いくちばし、同じく岩層で羽のような筋目のついた岩肌の凝灰岩を翼に見立てており見事だ。この鶴島の羽はややふくらんでおり影に雛を守る様子を表すとも言われ、他にも大きな穴が空いた景石が据えられておりそそりたつ三尊石と対を成すと見れば陰陽となるので子孫繁栄の深い祈りが込められた庭と言えるかもしれない。

現在庭の背景は築地塀だが、かっては大山を借景にしていた。

“Fukada Family Garden” Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture

The oldest garden in San'in, created in the Kamakura period. It is a Penglai-style garden based on ancient Chinese Taoism, and was once a zakan-style garden that could be viewed from the interior of Mr. Fukada's Shoin. Now that Shoin has been lost, you can view it from the new hut.

Although the garden is said to have been created in the Kamakura period, not everything remains as it is; the Izumo-style stepping stones in the front of the garden are from the later Edo period, and there have been changes over time.

However, the flesh-colored tuff shaped like the Australian continent, set halfway up the rocky hill on the right side of the garden, is very similar to the stone in Kyoto's Nanzenin Garden from the same period. This is great evidence that the Fukada family garden was created in the Kamakura period. There is no doubt that the same tuff, Sanzonseki, dates back to the Kamakura period. The extensive use of rough tuff gives the garden a masculine and courageous impression, the opposite of sophistication and elegance.

Another major feature of this garden is the crane island and turtle island floating in the pond. Both islands are rich in concreteness that can be recognized by anyone who looks at them.

Tsurushima in particular gives the impression of a brave hawk rather than an elegant crane. The sharp beak of the tuff and the tuff on the rock surface with feather-like striations are used as wings.

The wing-like rocks on Tsuru Island are slightly swollen and are said to represent the protection of the chicks in the shadow of the wings. There are other stones with large holes in the garden, which can be interpreted as yin and yang, which is the opposite of the towering Sanszonseki.Therefore, this garden is a "deep prayer for the prosperity of descendants.''

Currently, the background of the garden is a Tsukiji wall, but in the past, Mt. Daisen was used as a borrowed scenery.
