江戸時代、松江藩の奥出雲は日本全国の鉄生産量の三割を産出していた。櫻井家は鉄師頭取を務め、同じく鉄師頭取を務めた絲原家・田部家ととも「たたら御三家」と称された。なかでも櫻井家には松江藩第七代藩主・松平不昧公御成の際に建てられた御成の間と池泉庭園が残され、池に流れ落ちる滝は不昧公より直々に「岩浪」と名付けられている。滝はつたい落ちだが水に勢いがあり庭の規模に比べると水音は豪快に感じる。また澄んだ池の水面に影を落とす鄙びた草庵は明治時代に櫻井家に逗留した南画家・田能村直入が残したもので、もはや庭に欠かせない景を添えるものとなっている。右手の草庵と対するように左手には一本だけ楓が植えられ、やり過ぎ感がなく品がよい。それに対して屋敷の南側を流れる渓流沿いには多くの紅葉が見られる。これらは櫻井家五代目に京都から嫁いだ夫人が輿入れの際に持参して植えたものと伝わり、毎年初秋には紅葉の名所として賑わいをみせている。

During the Edo period, Okuizumo of the Matsue clan produced 30% of Japan's total iron production. The Sakurai family, Itohara family, and Tabe family were known as the ``Tatara three families'' as the top three families in the steel industry.
The Sakurai family still has the Onari no Ma, which was built by the Sakurai family as a accommodation room for the seventh lord of the Matsue domain, Matsudaira Fumai, when he visited for inspection, and the pond garden, which was built at the same time. The waterfall that flows into the pond in the garden was directly named ``Iwanami'' by Lord Fumai. The water at the waterfall is just as powerful as it was back then, and compared to the size of the garden, the sound of the water is impressive.
The small thatched house, which casts a shadow on the clear surface of the pond, was left behind by Naoiri Tanomura, a southern painter who stayed with the Sakurai family for two years during the Meiji period and worked on his creations, and it has become an indispensable addition to the garden.
In contrast to the small, secluded house on the right, there is a lone maple tree planted on the left, which is elegant without being overdone. On the other hand, many autumn leaves can be seen along the mountain stream running south of the mansion. It is said that the fifth generation of the Sakurai family, who married in from Kyoto, brought these and planted them on her wedding day, and the area is a popular spot for viewing autumn leaves every year in early autumn.
