Recently the Netflix latest documentary series Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives. has been released on the platform on 16th march and just after its release, Sarma wrote on her personal website about the income that she earned by sharing her real-life story to Netflix.
Earlier Sarma ran with her then-husband Anthony Strangis without giving the salary of her employees and swiping the investment of Investors. It was the year 2015 when Sarma run with Anthony Strangis but later got caught by the government officials.
But now Sarma Melngailis has claimed that she has been paid for her participation in the document series. Sarma has shared that all the good staff members that has earlier worked with her were devastated and angry for not being paid their salary. She has not raised any extra income from the Netflix series producers. As she only got paid the amount that was just equal to the debt that she has owed from her former employees. She had paid the heaviest portion of her debt which was her former employee’s salary but still has to pay other debts that have occurred due to the harm and downfall that she has suffered in her business after 2015.
“I also agreed to do this documentary because I hope people can learn something valuable from my story. As anyone who’s been through anything shitty knows, having your experience help others lessens the shittiness. I only finally saw Bad Vegan twelve days ago. The story is so weird and complicated, even to me, that it seemed inevitable that the documentary would get some things wrong, and I worried about this. I did not participate in how the story was told beyond my interviews and the source materials I contributed. I also worried about how my family would feel about it.”

The 49-years-old beauty Miss. Sarma is a native of Riga, Latvia in north-eastern Europe. But later her family moved to Newton Massachusetts where she was then raised and brought up. Living in Newton she first attended Newton North High School.
Sarma then started working in Investment Banking at Bear Stearns and then Private Equity at Bain Capital. Completing her certification in Food from French Culinary Institute Sarma first opened a Commissary partnering with Mr. Matthew Kenney in 2001. Matthew is a Chef and author. Her Commissary didn’t work long and they closed it in 2003. Sarma Melngailis then connected and consulted Jeffrey Chodorow’s company China Grill Management. With him and also with Matthew Kenney, Miss Sarma opened Pure Food and Wine Restaurant in June 2004 in New York City. It was the first of all a Raw Food restaurant in entire New York.
Earlier her restaurant was honored twice by New York Magazine. It was also listed in the list of Top 100 Restaurant in Forbes. It remained on the list of Forbes “All-Star New York Eateries” for almost 5 years.
She then along with Matthew Kenney opened a retail Takeaway store names One Luck Duck Juice in 2005. Her store used to deliver packed snacks from Pure Food and Wine. It also sells skincare, books, supplements, and other things.

In January 2015 after years of opening her restaurant and store, Sarma remained unable to pay the salary of her staff. Her entire staff run away.
In February 2015 she stated the closure of her restaurant and takeaway shop along apologizing about the fact. She shared that she was unable to pay the wages due to the low margins and high expenses of ingredients.
Later in April 2015, she reopened her restaurant and store but a majority of her staff didn’t join the event after a lot of requests by Sarma. But again in July 2015, Sarma Melngailis’s remaining staff left their working with Sarma because she was still unable to pay their wages. As Result, she permanently closed her all business.

It was May 26, 2016, when a report came out that Sarma and her then-husband Anthony Strangis (Shane Fox) has been arrested from Sevierville, Tennessee. They both got arrested when they ordered pizza from one Domino’s pizza. At that time they were living in separate hotel rooms.
Sarma Melngailis was arrested under the charges of Criminal Tax fraud, grand larceny, scheme to defraud, and violation of labor law.
Later under the judicial announcement, Sarma was found guilty of stealing more than $2 million USD from investors and doing fraud. The judge announced her a four-month jailed and she remained at NYC’s Rikers Island jail.
