亀戸アートセンターでは、イラストレーターの死後くんによる個展「囲炉裏に囲まれて」を開催します。

幼少期の落書きや友人との合作漫画を通じて、物語を紡ぐ楽しさに目覚めた死後くんは、少年漫画やギャグ漫画への憧れを抱きつつ、大学時代には映像制作にも関心を広げます。自主映画やミュージックビデオの制作現場を経験した後、紆余曲折の社会経験を経て、絵本制作のワークショップやSNSでの漫画発表を通して、自分の表現を少しずつかたちにしていきました。

死後くんは、頭の中で巡らせた空想を予想外の角度から飄々とした線やユーモラスな物語に変換し、ふと心に残るほっこりとした世界を描き出します。そこに登場するキャラクターたちは、愛らしさの中に一筋縄ではいかない独特さを秘めています。掴みどころのない表情や仕草は、思わずクスッと笑わせながらもどこかしら哀愁を漂わせ、観る人を自然とその世界へ引き込みます。

「囲炉裏を囲む」ではなく「囲炉裏に囲まれて」という、どこか禅問答のような本展タイトル。私たちには一見馴染み深いようで、実際にはあまり身近ではない“概念としての囲炉裏”を、死後くんがどのように描き出すのか。どうぞご期待ください！

・作家コンセプト

まず「囲炉裏に囲まれて」という言葉がふと浮かび、それが良いのか悪いのか判断つかぬままこの度の展示のテーマに採用しました。しかし自分のこれまでの暮らしは、囲炉裏とは全く無縁で、囲炉裏というものをぼんやりとしか把握しておりません。なので作品に描かれる囲炉裏はすべて私の脳内の囲炉裏です。脳内の囲炉裏をじっと見つめながら、「囲炉裏が“裏”であるならば、“表”としての囲炉表（いろひょう？）は存在するのか」、「“囲炉裏”のローマ字表記は“IRORI”となり、逆から読んでもまた“いろり”となるのは神の暗号なのか」などと思い巡らせていると、いつの間にか脳内の囲炉裏の向かいに座していた脳内ニーチェが私に囁いた

「おまえが囲炉裏を囲んでいるとき、囲炉裏もまたおまえを囲んでいるのだ」

そんな展示だと思ってもらえたら幸いです。

Kameido Art Center is pleased to present Surrounded by IRORI, a solo exhibition by illustrator sigokun.

sigokun first discovered the joy of storytelling through childhood doodles and collaborative comics with friends. While nurturing a deep admiration for shōnen and gag manga, he also developed an interest in filmmaking during his university years. After working on independent films and music videos, and gaining diverse experiences in society, he gradually shaped his own form of expression through picture book workshops and sharing comics on social media.

He transforms the fantasies that circulate in his mind into whimsical lines and humorous narratives from unexpected angles, creating warm and memorable worlds. The characters inhabiting these worlds possess both charm and an idiosyncratic quality that defies simplicity. Their elusive expressions and gestures invite a gentle chuckle, yet also carry a faint sense of melancholy, naturally drawing viewers into sigokun’s universe.

The exhibition title, Surrounded by IRORI, carries a nuance that feels almost like a Zen riddle—not “gathering around the irori,” but rather “being surrounded by it.” For many of us, the irori (a traditional Japanese sunken hearth) may seem familiar in concept, yet is seldom part of our lived experience. How will sigokun bring this “conceptual irori” to life? We invite you to look forward to the answer in this exhibition.

Artist’s Concept

The phrase “Surrounded by IRORI” suddenly came to mind, and without knowing whether it was good or bad, I decided to adopt it as the theme of this exhibition. Yet, my own life has been completely unrelated to irori (traditional Japanese hearths), and I only have the vaguest grasp of what they are. So, the irori depicted in my works all come from inside my head—purely mental images of irori.

As I gaze steadily at this inner irori, my thoughts begin to wander: If the irori is “ura” (the reverse side), then does an “omote”—an “irohyō,” perhaps—exist as its front side? Is it a divine code that the romanization “IRORI,” when read backwards, still spells “irori”?

And as these thoughts spiraled, before I realized it, an inner Nietzsche sitting across from my inner irori leaned forward and whispered to me:

“When you surround the irori, the irori also surrounds you.”

If the exhibition feels like that to you, then I will be glad.

雑誌POPEYE（マガジンハウス）、書籍『失敗図鑑』（大野正人著／文響社）、絵本『ごろうのおみせ』(ごろう作／岩崎書店)、NHK総合『おやすみ日本』他、書籍、雑誌を初めTV、webなど様々な媒体でイラストや漫画を手がける。著書に漫画『I My モコちゃん』（玄光社）。絵本『ぽんちうた』（ブロンズ新社）。「ペンネームが縁起が悪い」との理由で仕事が決まらないこと多々あり。

His illustrations and comics have appeared in a wide range of media, including magazines such as POPEYE (Magazine House), the book Shippai Zukan (Encyclopedia of Failures, written by Masato Ōno / Bunkyosha), the picture book Gorō no Omise (Gorō’s Shop, written by Gorō / Iwasaki Shoten), and the NHK General program Oyasumi Nippon, among many others spanning books, magazines, television, and the web.

He is the author of the comic I My Moko-chan (Genkosha) and the picture book Ponchi Uta (Bronze Publishing).

Due to the “unlucky-sounding” impression of his pen name, there have often been occasions when job opportunities slipped away.
