『レイクサイド』を読み終えて　📕

東野圭吾の『レイクサイド』を読み終えた。本作は興味深い作品だったけれど、私のお気に入りの小説というわけではない。

その理由の一つは、主人公を含め、登場人物たちの思考が理解しにくかった点にある。彼らの考え方は全体的に常軌を逸しているように感じられる。彼らにとって最優先事項は子どもの受験での成功であり、そのために倫理や道徳を完全に無視した行動を取っている。しかし本作の特に興味深い点は、読者自身も物語を読み進めるうちに、彼らの主張にどこか一理あると感じてしまうように描かれているところである。この不安を伴う感覚こそが、この作品の大きな魅力の一つだと思う。

主人公の俊介も、同様の感覚を抱いているように見受けられた。一方で、本作の最も優れた点は、東野圭吾が登場人物の内面や感情をほとんど描写していないというところにある。解説者、千街晶之は、『レイクサイド』を舞台劇のような作品であると評している。また東野さん自身も『公式ガイド』の中で、意図的にすべての登場人物の内面を描かなかったと述べている。

もう一つ、少し気になった点がある。

偽装に使った“あれ”は、乾いたあとでも匂いが残るのではないだろうか。

物語の結末もまた明確には示されず、読者それぞれが自分なりの結末を思い描く余地が残されている。

私は登場人物たちを好ましいとは感じなかったが、本作の独特な表現手法そのものには強い興味を抱いた。

I finished reading Lake Side by Keigo Higashino.It was interesting, but it was not my favorite novel.

One reason is that I couldn’t really understand the characters’ thoughts, including those of the protagonist. In general, their way of thinking feels abnormal. Their top priority is their child’s success in the entrance examination, and they act while completely ignoring ethics and morality. What makes this novel especially interesting is that, as readers, we gradually start to feel that what they are saying somehow makes sense. That uncomfortable feeling is, I think, one of the strongest points of this work.

The protagonist, Shunsuke, seems to feel the same way.However, the best part of this story is that Keigo Higashino does not describe the characters’ inner emotions at all. One commentator even compares this novel to a stage play. Higashino himself also writes in the Official Guide that he intentionally did not portray the inner thoughts of any of the characters.

There was one more thing that bothered me. I wondered if what was used for the disguise would still smell after it dried.

The ending is also left open, allowing each reader to imagine their own conclusion.

Personally, I did not like the characters very much, but I found the way this novel was written to be fascinating.
