My WD 4TB is undetectable because it fell from the table

2026.02.11 10:32

What probably happened inside

A drop can cause:

Read/write head crash onto the platter

Spindle motor jam

Internal platter misalignment

PCB shock damage

If you hear clicking / ticking / beeping / no spin, that’s a mechanical failure, not software.

Step 1 — Stop powering it on

Every time it tries to spin, the damaged head can scratch the data surface.

Unplug it. Don’t test again.

Step 2 — What symptoms do you see?

Tell me which one matches:

No sound, no vibration at all

Spins but makes clicking / ticking sound

Spins normally but not detected in Windows Disk Management

Shows up as “Unknown / Not Initialized”

USB cable light on but drive silent

Each means a different failure type.

Important: DO NOT

Do not open the drive

Do not freeze it

Do not tap or shake it

Do not use recovery software

Do not initialize in Disk Management

These destroy recoverable data after a fall.

The reality after a fall

If it’s a WD portable (My Passport / Elements), the drive inside is a fragile 2.5" platter drive. A drop while powered off is bad. A drop while powered on is worse.

In most cases like this, only clean-room recovery can fix it.

But—sometimes the damage is only PCB or head stuck, and recovery is possible without opening platters.

Step 3 — Quick safe check (one time only)

Plug it in once and observe:

Do you feel vibration/spin?

Any sound?

Does Disk Management show anything?

Then unplug and tell me.

If your data is important (photos, work, memories)

Do not try DIY. You need a professional lab.

In India, reliable labs:

Stellar Data Recovery

DataTracks

RecoveryMart

Seagate/WD authorized recovery partners

Cost after fall: ₹12,000–₹35,000 depending on damage.

If data is NOT important

The drive is physically dead. Replacement is cheaper than repair.
