Clementine George has been confined to the Elgin Asylum for the last fifty years. After getting on the right medicine, she is released and takes a bus to South Carolina to try and find a woman named Maudie she met some sixty years ago. She ends up on a Shrimp Dock in The Sea Islands where Maudie's cousin finds her and takes her to Orange Grove. Clementine tries to help Maudie save her relative Savannah from an abusive relationship. This is a book of how women will help each other no matter what the cost. Clementine finds home with Maudie. Everyone is welcome at the table. Maudie surprises Clementine and brings her family to come and stay with her along with The Whiskey Lou Sideshow. Maudie makes everyone feel welcome and nothing is off limits. Maudie brings her secrets into the light at times and other times she tucks them away. She always says the shovel in her garden is not for turnips. In the end Maudie teaches Clementine to love with an open heart. The women in this book love each other fiercely. Maudie's the beating heart of her entire family.
