『さよなら、アルマ〜赤紙をきた犬〜』は、

水野梓さんによる実話に基づいた小説であり、

ドラマ化もされた作品です。

この物語のモデルは、戦時中の日本で軍犬として

戦地に送られた犬たちと、その訓練士たちの現実です。

昭和初期、主人公の青年・太田健太郎は、川辺で捨てられていたシェパードの仔犬を拾い、「アルマ」と名付けて家族のように育てます。

やがてアルマは軍犬として訓練され、優秀な犬として認められていきます。

しかし戦争が激化すると、アルマに「軍用犬徴用令状（赤紙）」が届きます。

当時、シェパードなどは軍用犬として登録され、徴用は拒否できませんでした。

健太郎はアルマを一人で戦地に送り出すことができず、自らも軍犬育成員として志願し、共に満州へ渡ります。

当時、犬の赤紙は人間と同じく紅色の紙で届けられ、飼い主にとっては家族を差し出す命令でした。

周囲からは「名誉」とされましたが、実際には別れを意味していました。

戦場で犬は地雷探知や伝令などに使われましたが、あくまで「消耗品」として扱われました。

食糧不足の中では優先順位も低く、危険な任務に投入されました。

物語の中で、健太郎とアルマは戦闘の中で

離ればなれになります。

そして戦後、健太郎は帰国しますが、

アルマは戻りませんでした。

当時、戦地に送られた軍犬は

一頭も日本に帰ることはありませんでした。

終戦時、多くは殺処分されるか、

現地に置き去りにされました。

また極限状態では、食料や毛皮として利用されることも

ありました。

アルマもまた戦地を彷徨い、最期まで主人を待ち続けたとされています。

この出来事は、特別な話ではなく、

約4万頭とも言われる軍犬たちに起きた現実です。
