Mechanical vs. Surface-Mount Injection Packers: Which Should You Choose?

One of the most common decision points in planning a crack injection program is whether to use mechanical (drill-in) or surface-mount (adhesive) injection packers. Both types accomplish the same fundamental goal — providing a connected pathway between the injection pump and the crack — but they differ significantly in installation method, pressure capability, application suitability, and cost. Choosing the wrong type for the conditions can result in packer failure, incomplete crack filling, or unacceptable damage to the concrete surface.

Mechanical (Drill-In) Packers: Characteristics and Advantages

Mechanical packers require drilling a hole through the concrete surface, angled to intersect the crack at depth. The packer body is inserted into the hole and expanded using a bolt and washer mechanism that compresses an elastomeric sleeve, locking the packer in the hole and creating a seal against the drill hole wall. This provides a highly secure, pressure-rated connection rated for injection pressures from 50 bar up to over 300 bar in heavy-duty steel variants.

Key advantages of mechanical packers include high pressure capability, reliable sealing in irregular concrete surfaces, access to the crack at depth rather than just at the surface, and the option for re-injection. Surface-Mount (Adhesive) Packers: Characteristics and Advantages

Surface-mount packers, also called surface ports or adhesive packers, are bonded directly to the concrete surface using a rapid-setting epoxy paste, directly over the crack trace. No drilling is required, making them extremely fast to install — a crew can place dozens of surface ports in the time it would take to drill a single mechanical packer hole. They are particularly well-suited to visible crack networks on walls and ceilings where the crack can be traced clearly and access permits direct surface application.

Their limitation is pressure capability — most surface ports are rated to 30–50 bar maximum, above which the adhesive bond to the concrete surface fails. For low-pressure gravity feed injection of wide cracks, this is entirely adequate. For high-pressure systems, only drilled mechanical packers are appropriate.
