歯の病気を持つウサギの症例数が多い理由

動物病院への来院件数（症例数）をもとに調べると、うさぎでは歯の病気が最も多い疾患の一つです。

では、なぜ歯の病気を持つうさぎがこれほど多いのでしょうか。

その理由の一つとして、歯の病気になりやすい品種が世界的に人気であることが考えられます。

例えば、ネザーランドドワーフやホーランドロップなどの短頭種は、丸い顔立ちが特徴で高い人気を誇り、多くの国で飼育頭数の多い品種となっています。

また、短頭種のうさぎは、他の品種のうさぎと比較して人々に好まれる傾向があることが報告されています。 しかし、短頭種は顔が短く、歯科疾患のリスクが高いことが知られています。

そのため、短頭種の人気の高さが、歯科疾患の症例数の多さにつながっている可能性があります。

また、加齢や牧草を食べているかどうかも歯科疾患の重要なリスク因子であり、高齢のうさぎやペレットのみ食べているうさぎでは歯の病気がみられる機会が増えます。
