Days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off, Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was denied entry at Miami International Airport despite holding valid documents and a US visa. Iran's players were eventually granted visas, but at least 15 administrative and federation officials were unable to obtain visas. According to Iran's embassy in Turkey, as reported by BBC and Al Jazeera, the team was forced to abandon their planned training camp in Arizona and relocate to Tijuana, Mexico.

During travel within the United States, Senegal's squad was subjected to security screening on the airport tarmac, including metal detector checks. Footage of the screening was widely shared online. According to multiple media reports, fans from more than a quarter of the 48 participating nations face travel bans, tighter restrictions, or high visa rejection rates when attempting to enter the United States. Haiti and Iran are among the countries facing the most severe travel restrictions. Fans from Senegal, Ivory Coast, and several other nations have faced additional visa-related barriers. Some fans who had already purchased tickets have been forced to abandon their travel plans.
