亀戸アートセンターでは、宇都宮なお 個展「BUFFERING CHILD」を開催します。
KACでは2年ぶりとなる今回の個展。その間、宇都宮は個展やグループ展などで継続的に作品を発表しながら、制作の幅を広げてきました。
これまで多く用いてきた鉛筆に加え、近年は透明水彩でも描くようになり、色彩を含めた表現にも変化が見られます。また、少女を中心としてきたモチーフにも植物や虫、魚などの生き物が加わるようになりました。宇都宮は、少女の内側にある「欲」のようなものを、本能に近い感覚を象徴する生き物の姿に重ねながら、新たな表現を探っています。
人間と生き物をひとつの存在として描こうとするとき、その両者は完全に融合するのではなく、しばしば境目を残したまま描かれます。生き物が被り物のように見えたり、人間として認識できる部分が残されたりする中で、宇都宮は自身が無意識のうちに引いている「線」の存在に気づいていきました。
より本能に近い感覚を描こうとする一方で、それを自らの感覚によって一定のかたちに留めようとする。そのどちらか一方へ向かうのではなく、両者の間を行き来する状態は、宇都宮がこれまで扱ってきた「少女のジレンマ」とも重なります。本人が語るように、そこに生まれる境目は、単純になくしたいものでもありません。
本展のタイトル「BUFFERING CHILD」にある「BUFFERING」は、動画などのデータが読み込まれている途中の状態を意味します。
もっと別の描き方ができるのではないか、さらに先へ進めるのではないかと考えながらも、その答えはいまだ定まっていない。「BUFFERING」という言葉には、そうした制作の途中にある宇都宮自身の現在が重ねられています。
ただし、その状態は、ひとつの完成形へ向かうためだけの過程ではありません。人間と生き物、本能と自制、描こうとするものと実際に描かれるもの。その間に生じる境目をなくすのではなく、そこに留まりながら、自分の感覚と表現の関係を探っていく。現在の宇都宮の制作は、そうした試行の中にあると言えます。
本展では、鉛筆や透明水彩による作品、漫画原画などを通して、この2年間の活動を経て変化し続ける宇都宮なおの現在を紹介します。

・作家コンセプト
理性（自我）で保っている自分の中に、抗えない本能（衝動）が割り込み、
処理が追いつかず思考停止してしまう——その読み込みが進まない状態（バッファリング）
を意識している。
理性と本能の境目を「線」で、「色」で表しているのかもしれないし、
あるいはこの境目そのものが、表現の未完成な状態を表しているのかもしれない。
Kameido Art Center is pleased to present BUFFERING CHILD, a solo exhibition by Nao Utsunomiya.
This marks Utsunomiya’s first solo exhibition at KAC in two years. During that time, she has continued to present her work in solo and group exhibitions, gradually expanding the scope of her practice.
In addition to pencil, which has long been one of her primary mediums, Utsunomiya has recently begun working with transparent watercolor, bringing changes to the role of color within her work. Her subject matter has also expanded beyond the young girls who have long been central to her practice, and now includes plants, insects, fish, and other living creatures. By overlapping these creatures—symbols of sensations closer to instinct—with the desires and impulses that exist within her figures, Utsunomiya continues to explore new forms of expression.
When attempting to depict humans and other living creatures as a single being, however, the two do not always merge completely. At times, the creatures appear almost like costumes or coverings, while parts that remain recognizably human are left visible. Through this process, Utsunomiya became aware of the presence of a certain “line” or boundary that she had been unconsciously drawing.
While she seeks to depict sensations closer to instinct, she also tries to hold them within a certain form through her own perception and control. Rather than moving entirely toward one side or the other, her work moves back and forth between the two. This state also overlaps with the “dilemmas of girlhood” that Utsunomiya has explored in her previous work. As the artist herself has noted, the boundaries that emerge are not simply something she wishes to erase.
The word “BUFFERING” in the exhibition title BUFFERING CHILD refers to the state in which data, such as a video, is still being loaded.
Utsunomiya continues to wonder whether there might be another way to draw, or whether she can push her work further, without yet arriving at a definitive answer. The word “BUFFERING” reflects this present state of her practice—a state of still being in process.
At the same time, this state is not simply a transitional phase on the way toward a single completed form. Between human and creature, instinct and self-restraint, what one intends to depict and what actually appears on the page, boundaries continue to emerge. Rather than eliminating them, Utsunomiya remains within these in-between spaces, exploring the relationship between her own perceptions and the forms they take in her work. Her current practice exists within this ongoing process of experimentation.
Through works in pencil and transparent watercolor, as well as original manga drawings, this exhibition presents Utsunomiya’s evolving practice and where she finds herself after the past two years of continued exploration.

Exhibition Concept
Within the self held together by reason (the ego), an irresistible instinct or impulse breaks in, overwhelming the mind until it can no longer process what is happening and comes to a halt—a state of “buffering,” where the loading never seems to progress.
Perhaps the boundary between reason and instinct is expressed through “line” and “color.” Or perhaps this boundary itself represents an unfinished state of expression.

絵描き。人間関係から生じるジレンマや衝動、
理性を揺らす葛藤をテーマに制作。人物に昆虫や動物といった
モチーフを重ね合わせ、鉛筆とシャープペンシルの繊細な線と
水彩の淡い色合いで曖昧さと不安定さを表現し、独自の世界観
を築く。 現代的な感性を融合させ、感情の深層や人間本来の美
しさを力強く描き出す。

Nao Utsunomiya (Naorin)
Artist. Utsunomiya explores dilemmas and impulses arising from human relationships, as well as conflicts that unsettle reason. By combining human figures with motifs such as insects and animals, she expresses ambiguity and instability through delicate lines drawn in pencil and mechanical pencil, together with subtle watercolor tones. Blending these elements with a contemporary sensibility, she creates a distinctive visual world that powerfully depicts the depths of human emotion and the intrinsic beauty of human nature.

Born in Nagano Prefecture and currently based in Tokyo. Since 2022, she has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions.
Her awards include selection for the 230th edition of The Choice and runner-up selection for the 231st edition. Recent commissions include illustrations for literary magazines and album artwork.
