VueScan is a computer program for image scanning, especially of photographs, including negatives.[4] It supports optical character recognition (OCR) of text documents.[5][6]. The software can be downloaded for free, but a watermark is placed on all scans until the user purchases a license.

So I installed them (bottom to top, since the top ones seem to require ones lower down in the graph). Then I launched Image Capture, which should work with SANE, and nothing came up. Logged into another user, got a brief bit of hope when Image Capture came up with a scanning window that said "SANE is in use by another application", but when I quit Image Capture from my main user and switched back to the other user, Image Capture again said that there was no attached device that was supported. I even restarted to try and shore up the software, and it still didn't work. *sigh*

According to the release notes, VueScan 8.5.27 fixes a problem with HP scanners on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), as well as a problem with HP DeskJet F735. In addition to the improved auto strip film alignment with Nikon film scanners mentioned above, VueScan 8.5.27 improves German language support.

I use multi function systems and flatbed scanners which have auto document feeders all the time. They are very useful for OCR work. My department is responsible for, among other things, setting up technical documentation. A truly amazing percentage of the technical documents we get either don't have ebook versions available, or if they do, they're poor quality PDFs. A lot of them are available as looseleaf documents. We feed them into an ADF-equipped scanner, scan in at high resolution, and feed the result to OCR and build our own EPUBs. Books which show as bound copies get sent to an intern who cuts each page out with an Xacto cutter, then stacks the pages in an ADF and OCRs them. Proof-reading and setting up tables of content, captions, figures and illustrations, tables, indexes, and such is a pain, but that's what interns are for.

Make sure you have your scanner plugged in and turned on before you open VueScan. If you don't have it turned on before you start, restart VueScan once you have it turned on.

Close the app if running

For example, if colours don't look quite true in the preview, try Control-clicking on an area of the image that should be gray. To reset to the automatic colour balance setting, Control double-click on the image. If the lighting in the scene is unusual (i.e. at sunset or with stage lighting), try setting "Colour/Colour balance" to "Neutral".

Watermark on scanned images

First time ever not able to install an update. I started with an Apple II and have had everything in between. Never had an update fail to this extent. Upgrading a late 2014 iMac Core i7, 1TB Fusion, updating from macOS 10.13.6.
