Japanese people often say that being patient is important. Sometimes, stating one's opinion strongly is seen as a bad thing.
我 = わたし oneself
慢 = 慢心 to be conceited
もともと、「我慢する」は、自分はすごいと慢心(まんしん)するという意味でした。
Originally, "gaman suru" meant to brag or to be conceited.
我慢すると、たくさんのひとから批判(ひはん criticism)もあります。
If you are conceited, many people might criticize you.
批判(ひはん)されても、耐える(たえる endure, bear)
がまんする = to bear, to be patient の意味になりました。
Thus, "gaman suru" came to refer to being patient in the face of criticism.
