Ironing with maize-cob charcoal
ZAMMAMA products are produced under a tree at a primary school ground. There is no electricity supply, so we use literally “an iron“ heated with charcoal inside.
In rural villages in Zambia, the main source of daily fuel is wood, while charcoal is something of a bit luxury. In fact, the dependency on wood as fuel has led to deforestation.
ZAMMAMA uses charcoal made from maize cobs. Maize is main staple food in Zambia.
Maize-cob charcoal is easy to light and lasts long in a small quantity, which is ideal for ironing.
To save charcoal, Zammamas think carefully: which part to sew first? How can members use the iron in turn without intervals?
Although materials and tools available are limited, Zammamas are positive to look for solutions to deliver fine products and smile!
