有り難う(ありがとう)Thank you
There are kanji for the word arigatou. But why are they 有 and 難 ?

「ありがとう」は、英語のThank youです。ふつう、ひらがなで書きますが、じつは、漢字もあります。
Arigatou means thank you in English. It is normally written in hiragana, but there is actually kanji for it.

「ありがとう」は、ブッダが人々(ひとびと)にした話から来ました。
The word arigatou came from a story that Buddha told to people.
海に目の見えないカメがいて、100年に一度、顔をだします。
There was a blind turtle who lived in the sea. Every one hundred years, he stuck his head out of his shell.
海の上には穴の開いた丸太があります。
On the top of the water, there was a piece of wood with a hole in the middle.
目の見えない亀が、その穴(あな)に頭をだすことがあるでしょうか?
Is there any possibility that the blind turtle will stick its head through the hole?
そんなことが有るのは難しいのです。

この亀の話のように、あなたが人として生まれたのも、じつは有り難い事で、かんたんなことではないのです。だから感謝しなければいけません。
Just as in the story of the turtle, the fact that you were born as a human is a rare thing, and not something that happens easily. Therefore, you should appreciate it.
この「有り難い」が「ありがとう」になりました。
今でも、強い感謝を言うとき、「ありがたい」を使うことがあります。
The word arigatai, or thankful, became arigatou.
Even now, people sometimes use arigatai when they want to express strong appreciation.
