Australian rider Jared Rando takes the A line at the 2009 UCI World Mountain Bike Championships in Canberra, Australia. Indian DH rider Piyush Chavan during 1st Himalayan Downhill Mountain Bike Trophy held at Himalayan Mountain Bike Festival. Part of the Sarajevo urban downhill downtown race track. Downhill mountain biking ( DH) is a genre of mountain biking practiced on steep, rough terrain that often features jumps, drops, rock gardens and other obstacles. Downhill bikes are heavier and stronger than other mountain bikes and feature front and rear suspension with over 8 inches (20 cm) of travel, to glide quickly over rocks and tree roots. In competitive races, a continuous course is defined on each side by a strip of tape. Depending on the format, riders have a single or double attempt to reach the finish line as fast as possible, while remaining between the two tapes designating the course. Riders must choose their line by compromising between the shortest possible line and the line that can be traveled at the highest speed. If a rider leaves the course by crossing or breaking the tape they must return to the course at the point of exit, unless they do not gain a time advantage from crossing the tape, in which case they can continue with their run. citation needed] Riders start at intervals, often seeded from slowest to fastest, and courses typically take two to five minutes to complete with winning margins being often less than a second. Riders are timed with equipment similar to that used in downhill skiing. [1] History of competitive racing [ edit] The 1st downhill time-trial race took place in Fairfax, California on October 21, 1976 on a fireroad now referred to as Repack Road, 2] 3] 4] due to the need to repack the hub brake after each descent. [5] The bikes used were based on cruiser bicycles that had a drum or coaster brake that worked by pedalling backwards. The mechanism operated with a conical brake shoe being wound on a thread in a metal hub. To prevent the brake from seizing it was kept filled with grease. Heavy use during the descent would cause the brake to over heat, softening the grease and causing it to drain from the hub, requiring frequent repacking. Ten riders descended 1, 300 feet (400 m) of Repack road in about 5 minutes. [6] The first bikes used for descending were known as "klunkers" or "paperboy bikes. sturdy cruisers using balloon tires and coaster brakes, designed by Ignatz Schwinn during the Great Depression. [7] The bikes could endure abuse that would damage other bicycles by changing features from the Henderson and Excelsior motorcycles his company had built during the 1920s, including a heavy "cantilevered" frame with two top tubes and 2. 125-inch-wide (54. 0 mm) balloon" tires from Germany. Innovations like the fat-tire Schwinn with derailleur gears by Russ Mahon [5] of The Morrow Dirt Club in Cupertino at the 1974 Marin County cyclo-cross and Gary Fisher's [5] 1975 use of a tandem rear hub (from a flea market) with a drum brake threaded for a freewheel cluster developed the sport, and by 1979, two organizers and competitors of the Repack downhill, Charlie Kelly [5] and Gary Fisher founded the company which named the sport, MountainBikes. [8] As mountain biking grew during the 80s, downhill riders continued to use either rigid or limited-travel (under 2 inches (5 cm) suspension bicycles. Purpose-made downhill bikes started to appear in the 90s, with innovations such as dual crown forks and disc brakes, as well as more elaborate suspension designs. Later, riders from other disciplines began focusing on downhill, such as BMX racers Daniel Solano (Team Tomac Bikes) and Brian Lopes. Their influence is seen in the increased difficulty of many courses, with bigger jumps and drops added. The coming of age for downhill biking was its inclusion at the first UCI Mountain Bike Championship, held in 1990 in Durango, Colorado. Notable downhill racing venues [ edit] Many ski areas are converted into downhill mountain biking venues in the summer, such as Whistler Mountain Bike Park and Fernie Alpine Resort, 9] and many all-season downhill trails have been specifically developed. At some courses, bikers ride gondolas, trams or chair lifts to the starting point, or "shuttling" with motorized vehicles is used to transport riders to the top of the hill. Others are accessible by riding (or pushing) bicycles to the starting point. Urban downhill courses have also appeared in mountain-side cities, with the courses going through city streets and sidewalks, such as the Taxco Downhill event in Mexico. [10] Courses used in competition often feature several "lines" through or around difficult obstacles. For example, the "A line" might be a direct line over a large jump with a sketchy landing, the "B line" a smaller jump with a better landing, and the "C line" completely avoids the jumps, but may take longer. Australia [ edit] The 2009 UCI World Mountain Bike Championships in Australia. Australia has produced a large number of internationally successful downhill racers, including Sam Hill, Chris Kovarik, Nathan Rennie and Mick Hannah. The large majority of Australian downhill riding and racing is accessed by shuttling in cars, buses or by walking to the top of the track (push runs) however the venues at Mount Buller and Thredbo provide lift accessed tracks during the snow less summer months. Mount Stromlo, which is near the capital Canberra, hosted a World Cup Round in August 2008 and the 2009 World Championships. The top can be accessed by either riding up singletrack, or by shuttling via the road. Australia's first UCI Mountain Bike World Cup was held Cairns in 1994-1995. followed by the World Mountain Bike Championships in 1996 and again in 2017, placing Cairns on the map as the premier Australian mountain bike destination. citation needed] Austria [ edit] Located right in the Alps this country has a lot of places for downhill riding. A large majority of Austria 's downhill tracks are accessible via lift shuttles. A World Cup track called the "Planai" is located in the city of Schladming. It is about 5 km long with an average descent grade of about 35. citation needed] Bolivia [ edit] Most of Bolivias downhill riding is done in the Andes Mountains in and around La Paz. In the city you have Pura Pura; a few trails through the forest. Camiraya at the outskirts of La Paz has more and longer trails. A little further out in Sorata, you have the Loma Loma and Chu Chu trail. There are also trails in other parts of the country, for example in Cochabamba and Potosi. Bosnia and Herzegovina [ edit] Bosnia and Herzegovina is rich with mountains especially around the capital city of Sarajevo, in which a downtown race is held, although MTB and downhill especially are still developing to become known sports in Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are more and more riders which use mountains like Igman, Bjelašnica and others for downhill racing. Currently there are few tracks on Trebević, Igman, Bjelašnica, Cavljak - Barice, all featured tournaments on international level. UXO 's are one of the reasons for slow development of this sport in a country with a such great potential for it. citation needed] Canada [ edit] Canada is famous for its downhill racing as well as other sorts of mountain biking. The Whistler Mountain Bike Park in Whistler, British Columbia hosts the annual Crankworx and Joyride Huckfest racing events. The province of British Columbia is also home to several other large lift-serviced mountain bike parks, including Sun Peaks in Kamloops, BC, Silver Star Mountain Resort in Vernon, BC, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden, BC and Fernie Alpine Resort. The North Shore Mountains of North Vancouver, BC, are a famous downhill biking destination in their own right. The popular style of technical downhill freeriding that involves many man-made trail elements originated here. The style is often referred to as "North Shore Style. " Canada has produced many world-class mountain bike racers, including downhillers Andrew Shandro and Steve Smith. The mount of Bromont, situated in Bromont, Quebec, and Mont-Sainte-Anne near Quebec City are great places for downhill biking. citation needed] Croatia [ edit] Finn Iles in the 2018 UCI Downhill World Cup at Lošinj, Croatia Downhill MTB races have been held in Croatia since 1993, when the first competition was organized outside Zagreb, on the same mountain that today hosts the world cup races in alpine skiing. Until the past 4-5 years, Mountain biking was banished from popular hiking trails and ski slopes around the capital. However, with the rise in popularity of DH and enduro, gravity) riding, Trail managers have relaxed and along with allowing riders, have begun to allow for development of MTB specific trails, cooperating with the local riding community to communicate which trails are acceptable and which are not. Additionally, the area known as 'Grma' has seen the growth and development of DH specific trails. The art of MTB DH riding flourished in other parts of Croatia, especially in the northern Adriatic coastal region and in northern (continental) part of country. In 2010 the national DH Cup events were held in Buzet (Istria) Samobor (Zagreb area) Pakrac (Slavonia) and Gracisce (Pazin, Istria. Additionally, multiple enduro races around the country are now part of an annual 'Cro-enduro' series and the fall of 2017 saw organization of first ever Croatian Enduro National Championships. Urban downhill events are also held in the coastal city of Rijeka. citation needed] 2018 saw the first UCI Mountain Bike World Cup held in Croatia, on the island of Lošinj. France [ edit] Downhill mountain biking near Belfort, France The French Alps are home to many downhill routes [11] and events. The most famous of which is the Mega Avalanche downhill race event in the Alp d'Huez and Bourg d'Oisans region. Another downhill course in the region is Les Deux Alpes which sometimes hosts other downhill events. The downhill courses and events are limited in the area however, because of the alpine winter and snow. The most popular area for downhill in the French alps is the Portes du Soleil including the two more popular resorts of Morzine and Les Gets. Most recently, a world cup was held for the first time in La Bresse. In August 2011, La Bresse hosted the sixth round of the UCI World Cup. Since 2015, Lourdes hosted a World Cup round each year. Georgia [ edit] The first downhill trails in Georgia were developed in 2015. Among the first built was in Gudauri, followed by trails in Bakuriani. Both of the places are also ski resorts. Trails are at 2000–2250 meters, with trail lengths of about 5000 meters. citation needed] Germany [ edit] In Germany the landscape is quite diverse, reaching from flatlands in the north to medium-sized mountains in the center to alpine mountains in the south. Downhill tracks in Germany are not as steep as in Switzerland, Austria or Canada and the difference from top to bottom is less, but the main parts of an average track are everywhere in Germany. Racing on these short tracks is highly intense and allows no mistakes. Due to the country's large population the sport has developed quickly in Germany. Number of riders can go up to 600 at races. With 3 cup races, Thuringia, in the middle of Germany, is the center of gravity riding. The most popular race series is the 'iXS German Downhill Cup. In Germany is the Europe's biggest Mountainbike Freeride Festival hold, called iXS Dirt Masters. It includes one iXS German Downhill Cup Round, a 4X Race and a slopestyle contest. Photo: Searchlight Pictures Last summer, a shocking viral video began pinging around Twitter. In the clip, a man at a ski resort makes a panicked dash for safety during a controlled avalanche, abandoning his wife and two children to the wall of snow rushing toward them. “Men are unbelievably useless” read one tweet from a verified user. Others chimed in to express their disbelief that someone could behave so selfishly. What many of them didnt know, but a number of annoyed and amused cinephiles were more than eager to tell them, was that this wasnt cellphone footage of a real incident. It was a scene from Force Majeure, a 2014 Swedish comedy about male ego in crisis. That the moment could be confused for reality… well, it was like a punchline out of the film itself. Ruben Östlund, its exacting writer-director, must have smiled when he heard. This isnt the only blip on the pop-culture radar Force Majeure is presently enjoying. Was its second life as an unlikely meme just sly viral marketing for its transformation into a kinder, gentler Will Ferrell comedy? Downhill, a new remake from writer-directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, is very close to exactly what you might expect from an American version. While the original was a bone-dry, scathingly funny portrait of a marriage destabilized by a kneejerk act of self-preservation, the humor here is broader, with bawdy masturbation mishaps and gags about hashtags. Its also more forgiving, softening the assault on fragile masculinity with notes of sentimentality. And gone, of course, is the precision of Östlunds craft; dash any unrealistic hopes of seeing Ron Burgundy stumble through some carefully and unnerving composed long takes. The premise remains intact, however. Its inciting incident is still that now internet-famous failure of nerve—the moment when a well-off businessman, here Pete (Ferrell) instinctively sprints away from the billowy cloud of snow rapidly approaching the mountainside patio where hes having breakfast with his wife, Billie (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and their two preteen boys. The avalanche is a false alarm, an optical illusion of doom; all it really does is blow some flakes over the alarmed guests. But it certainly feels like a brush with death while its happening. And it casts a cloud of resentment and shame over the familys vacation in the Alps, as Pete stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the cowardice of his actions and Billie simmers with resentment at a man with no apparent protective instincts toward his wife and children. Sounds gut-busting, no? In Östlunds hands, it genuinely was; Force Majeure, for all the chilly remove of its filmmaking, found constant, inspired cringe comedy in its patriarchs crumbling self-image and pathological abnegation of responsibility. Downhill strains for laughs of a different sort, many of them pitched to the wheelhouse of its TV-trained stars. Faxon and Rash, who previously wrote and directed the throwback 80s summer comedy The Way, Way Back, play up the discrepancy between Pete and Billies buttoned-up American marriage and the blasé sexual liberation of their Swiss hosts, including Miranda Otto as an over-sharing, polyamorous hotel manager. Silicon Valley s Zach Woods is also on hand as Petes coworker, vacationing through Europe with his younger girlfriend (Zoe Chao) and dropping awkward asides during the scene where Billie finally addresses the elephant in the room. (Woods has been cast in the part occupied in Force Majeure by Kristofer Hivju of Game Of Thrones, who has a very funny cameo in Downhill. Photo: Searchlight Pictures If theres a real draw to this bastardized variation, its Louis-Dreyfus. She really taps into Billies frustration and disappointment, supplying what sporadic pathos the film achieves (as during her big monologue, when she replays the terror of the avalanche) but also grounding the wackier interludes in recognizable emotion. Its to Downhill s credit that it does try to imagine a life for Billie outside of her domestic discord—conceiving, for example, of a flirtation with infidelity colored by her own midlife anxiety. Ferrell, on the other hand, is miscast. Theres a certain appeal to seeing this frequently over-the-top performer dial down his bellowing tendencies; hes working in a mode here much closer to the change-of-pace melancholy of Everything Must Go than the exaggerated shtick of his star vehicles. But with the SNL alum in the role, Pete comes across like a dopey sitcom dad from the start—how far, you wonder, can he really fall in the estimations of his family? Downhill doesnt so much unbalance the gender roles of his marriage as nudge Pete toward the realization that he needs to be a more engaged father. Its a soupy conflict. Maybe its good that Downhill doesnt try to replicate Östlunds more withering farce. The film could have taken the easiest route of tracing over its predecessor entirely, offering a scene-for-scene facsimile à la the pilot of the American Office. But Force Majeure exists. Should one pretend it doesnt simply to give this less ambiguous remake, with its subtext-shattering speeches and blandly bright imagery, a fair shake? Do we really need a more reassuring version when the genuine article is readily available? Theres maybe one ideal audience for Downhill, and thats the folks who have never seen or maybe even heard of the much better film on which its based. But will they be distracted at how quickly the filmmakers were able to make a movie out of that outrageous viral video of a dude totally bailing on his family.
Nick Allen January 30, 2020 Every movie, even a remake, deserves to be viewed on its own merits. But thats easier stated than done when you have a film like “Downhill, ” a largely inferior American knockoff that's far less dynamic than the 2014 dark comedy it's based on. Not that this project didnt come together with some inspiration, starting with the first time that Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus have worked together. And then theres the writing/directing duo— Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, who previously made a family summer comedy to remember with “The Way Way Back, ” working with “Succession” writer Jesse Armstrong. With all of this talent on hand, its a let down to see them soften the edges in this depiction of a marriage dealing with disaster, and then try to make it familiar with some cheap comedy. Advertisement The premise for “Downhill” takes after Ruben Östlund s “ Force Majeure, ” which was about a family on a ski vacation that turned into a make-or-break point between a checked-out husband and worn-down wife. After scenes of getting acclimated to their adult Austrian resort and some time on the slopes, Billie (Julia-Louis Dreyfus) her husband Pete (Will Ferrell) and their two sons decide to grab lunch on an elevated patio. But their mountainous, picturesque background turns dangerous when controlled explosions set off an avalanche that careens right toward everyone on the patio. As the snow crashes down toward them, Pete chooses his cell phone and himself, darting away from the table as Billie holds onto her sons for dear life. When Pete returns, he orders soup as if nothing happened, as if he didnt just leave them behind. In one of the films few glimmers from Louis-Dreyfus performance, she tries to swallow the shock from such a betrayal, her trembling hand over her mouth before resuming lunch herself. The avalanche incident hangs over Billie and Pete for the rest of the trip, and tension mounts as Pete shows more of his cowardly, selfish true self. When Pete invites visiting work friend Zach ( Zach Woods) and his wife Rosie ( Zoe Chao) to come over for drinks (without giving Billie proper notice) Pete continues to deny the event, and tries to use ski boots as proof that he didnt run away. And when Billie and Pete go to an icy hotel figurehead ( Kristofer Hivju) to complain about the dangerous explosion, Pete fails to support her—especially when its revealed that he initially saw signs warning about the explosion, and just didnt think to say anything about it. Rash and Faxon try to make these scenes from a marriage pop with broadly drawn side characters, and depending on how you wish this movie would play out, its going to be too much or not enough. The trend seems to be horny Europeans, starting with Miranda Otto and her comically-forward hotel employee Charlotte; later, Louis-Dreyfus has a lesson with a comically-forward ski instructor named Guglielmo (Giulo Berruti. The familiarity of these characters can make “Downhill” even more dull, even if theyre meant to offer overt comic relief. A major void in the comedy and the drama of the story is in how “Downhill” uses its cast. For Ferrell, this is where a movie that took more advantage of his talents could have excelled, and instead it casts him so that you always see his man-child characters of the past. We dont get the sense that were watching one mans maturity set-back—even with a detail about his father passing away eight months ago—so much as that hes always been like this, and needs to learn one way or another that you cant coast through the family roles youve signed up for. And the comedy goes even further in highlighting his goofy quality, as his few overtly funny scenes prefer to have him acting like the most immature of the three males of the family, or falling over at a bar drunk like its Frank the Tank from “ Old School ” acting out against domestication. Its not even good Ferrell-style hijinks. Thankfully, Louis-Dreyfus is given richer material, as she goes from visibly disturbed to quietly disgusted. She experiences her own understanding that she deserves better than Petes inaction, and has some cutting bits of dialogue whenever Pete tries to deflect or deny what happened. And in one of the storys mildly amusing scenes, she asserts her autonomy during her time with tempting ski instructor Gugliemo. Her actions are surprising, and also make her character more interesting than her sourpuss husband. The scene leaves you wishing that if the story was going more for dysfunctional vacation comedy, that Louis-Dreyfus could have gotten the chance for similar laughs. “Downhill” watches Billie and Pete grow farther and farther apart, with Pete failing to admit a shame that Ferrell sometimes hints at with a boyish frown. Rash, Faxon, and Armstrong eventually bring their couple to a grand finale of sorts, and its not only stunningly abrupt but an undermining of its all-star talent's emotional potential. Its yet another instance in which its hard to not think about what could have been, especially since the original did it so much better. Filed from the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
