On the other hand, their streaming, No Manches Frida 2s, has 55 million members. On the night of August 29th, 2016, Dante Buckley started crying. Editors Note: This story was originally published in October 2016. It wasnt because he was heartbroken from a devastating breakup, or because he was sad and distraught from horrible events in his life. No, this night, Dante Buckley was crying tears of joy, relief, and excitement. After dropping out of college and focusing on teaching himself how to create a video game from scratch almost entirely by himself, his game, Onward, was finally released on Steam Early Access. The weight had been lifted and he could finally breathe again. A long, arduous road he started down over a year ago had finally reached its first milestone. But this wasnt the end of the road — he was just getting started. The Anatomy of a Surprise Hit “This is my first-ever interview, ” Buckley confessed nervously during a Skype call. “I honestly did not know how big the game would be. I dropped out of college and focused for a full year on game development. I had some funds left that didnt go towards tuition and I just went heads down and focused. I had a bit of programming background, but not in gaming. I watched YouTube, used resources online, and just built Onward. Thats where the name for the game came from. I wanted to keep moving forward and this was the perfect name for that point in my life. ” Now, two short months later, Onward has over 700 reviews on Steam with a ‘Very Positive designation and its widely regarded as one of the best VR shooters available on any headset. Its easily one of the most popular games among Vive gamers on Steam. Which, in some ways, defies logic. Conventional wisdom says create a fun, accessible game that can be enjoyed by gamers of all types and VR-comfort levels. Make it sickness free. Provide a multitude of movement options. Hold hands and simplify controls. Thats what common knowledge says for a brand new medium, but Onward isnt like that. Its a hardcore, simulation-style, multiplayer military shooter that requires motion controls and a roomscale environment. According to the game analysis website Steam Charts, Onward had over 270 concurrent players at its all-time peak and maintained over 50 players on average throughout the past month — which means you should never have issue finding a game. That may not sound like much, but compare those numbers to other multiplayer VR shooters you may be more familiar with, such as Battle Dome ( 87 all-time peak. Hover Junkers ( 107 all-time peak. or even the 100% free Rec Room ( 112 all-time peak) and the popularity is clear. “Its my first game and nobody knows who I am and I just really didnt expect it to be this big, ” Buckley admitted. “I started working on the game when I was 18 and Im 20 now. Its just so much bigger than I could have expected. ” Much to his surprise, the game was a hit in the budding market of VR gaming. The surprise success adds up to approximately 18, 000 sales so far to date. The game costs 25, and with a little quick math, that means the game has made ~400, 000 from Onward, not counting any limited sale periods and not factoring in the revenue split from Steam. For a small game made by a single college dropout, thats tremendous. “I definitely grew up playing a lot of first-person shooter games, ” Buckley said. “The biggest one for me was probably  Halo, back when I was around six on the first Xbox. I used to play the old Call of Duty games on PC too, my dad let me try those. Medal of Honor, Battlefield,   Ghost Recon, and Rainbow Six too. ” A Hardcore Shooter Without Compromises The VR landscape is constantly in flux in its early  stages and there is an apparent mad dash to be one of the first in various different genre categories. Buckley knew that people would release shooters, but they werent the shooters he wanted. A focus on arcadey, simple experiences was a far cry from he tactical realism the desired. “I knew there would be a market for it, ” Buckley said. “So I just made this game for myself. I want Onward to be my dream game. This is based on what I want to play and what Ive played in the past. ” The games entire development was also chronicled in a series of dev blogs on YouTube, the first of which was posted almost a full year ago. That was a crucial part in building the games fan base. But he wasnt just creating  Onward, he was creating an entire game development studio. By hiring some freelance commissions and contractors to help with art work and other assets, he took on the job of programming and launching the game, and thus Downpour Interactive was born. When someone loads into the game for the first time, it can be overwhelming. There is a brief series of tutorial-esque moments and a shooting range to practice on, but it definitely isnt a game for the feint of heart. He encourages everyone to watch the tutorial video (embedded above) before actually playing the game. It feels like one of those safety training videos they make you watch before going on certain rides at Disneyland. Due to the type of game that Onward is, youll be using the full compliment of both Vive controllers. You can move yourself freely around the environment using the left touchpad, or physically walk, duck, and maneuver in your actual physical room. Reach down and grab your gun, put a magazine in, load the chamber, and configure settings all using actual switches and slots on the physical guns model. You can reach up to your shoulder and talk to teammates on your radio, or grab the grenade at your belt, pull the pin, and toss it at your enemies. Youve even got a knife at the ready for use in close-quarters combat. All of these things Ive described are in most other modern military shooters — but theyre not in VR. Using your hands and physically doing all of these things — like ducking behind a wall as an enemy fires at you from 100 yards away — is a visceral feeling unlike anything else Ive tried inside a headset. Since the game uses a mixture of roomscale movement and artificial trackpad locomotion, youd initially assume people would get sick, as thats the common understanding. But according to Buckley, thats almost never the case. “I got lucky with how people dont really get sick. People that get sick in other games dont seem to get sick in Onward, ” Buckley laughed. “I can make some guesses, but I dont really know what I did to avoid sickness. ” Essentially, there are three main contributing factors, he surmises. Firstly, there is no yaw rotation, meaning you cant artificially move your heads view from side-to-side using the trackpad. Thats often a big contributing factor, so he makes you physically turn your head. Secondly, the touchpad movement actually help as well, as you can adjust your speed and acceleration based on where you place your thumb — or lack of acceleration, as it were — however you want. Finally, by focusing your vision downfield at enemies and points of interest, it creates a subconscious tunnel vision that emulates the narrowing field of view seen in other games, like Eagle Flight. Ive never been susceptible to motion sickness either inside or outside of VR, but I can verify that I also dont experience it in Onward either. Granted, it could also be the hardcore-leaning nature of the experience as well. I assume its tough to focus on whether or not youre nauseous when youre splayed out, prone on the ground, trying to line up a shot a few hundred yards away. In fact, Ill never forget the first time someone opened fire on me — it had that sudden, adrenaline-infused impact of an event that was actually happening. It didnt feel like a video game as I ducked for cover. Building VR For The Future As much as Buckley loves making Onward, he doesnt want to stop with where hes at right now. Ultimately, hes a creator at heart. He has ideas for adding cooperative missions and expanding the competitive modes, as well as other game ideas for the future. “I dont think multiplayer is going anywhere for me, but I want to go into singleplayer storytelling soon, ” Buckley explained. “I dont see myself leaving the shooter genre much, but there are other genres I enjoy. I am really interested in telling stories in VR and I just knew that multiplayer was a great place to start and learn. Thats really what the studio name, Downpour Interactive, is all about. I want to make people feel a downpour of emotions when they play my games. ” There is already such a wide variety of content available for VR devices, its easy to see the allure of other genres at some point in the future. Hes working on building a team for Onward right now, since its still mostly just him by himself pushing out patches and updates. “Its been super stressful with lots of Red Bull, ” Buckley told me. “Continuous 14+ hour work days. Its been worth it though — its lots of fun and I love it. After Onward, Ive got at least 5-10 other game ideas I want to work on in the future. Its been really scary though, putting myself out there so much as the face of this game and the company. Gamers can get a little extreme with their opinions. For the most part though, its been super positive and I wouldnt be where I am without the fans. Their support means everything to me. ” Onward and upward, indeed. Onward is now available on Steam for 24. 99 with official support for all major PC VR headsets. For tips on playing the game well you can read our Onward Field Guide here.

High/top tier in season one due to a number of extremely potent tools, combined with high input delay, he was nerfed out of relevancy in season two and has never come back since. These days, he's a character generally seen as too weak to be tournament viable, with a playstyle that contradicts the SFV meta as a whole. I don't think Nash is weak at all- the biggest issue with the character is that his weaknesses are extremely noticeable, while his strengths are maybe a bit less obvious. His balance changes from season 2. 5 and onwards have reflected an interesting balance philosophy which, in my opinion, have also lead to his continued perception as weak (despite him receiving essentially nothing but buffs. In a nutshell, Nash is a hybrid zoner/pressure character, unique in his combination of extremely long-ranged physical attacks as well as potent projectiles. Compared to other zoners, he brings to the table some slippery movement, a bevy of anti-airs tailored for many situations, a terrific projectile absorption tool of his own, and projectiles uniquely suited for pressure. Compared to other characters with good pressure, Nash has a fully single-hit confirmable six frame medium, a true corner throw loop at the cost of a bar of meter, a unique (albeit gimmicky) command jump that allows him to reset his offense on a hesitant opponent, and a very quick plus on block meterless special move (provided he has VS2 stocked. With his hefty toolkit, Nash has options for just about any situation in neutral- but his terrible close-range defensive options and mixup tools hold him back from being seen as anything above mid tier for most people. STRENGTHS: Nash has great pokes for any range imaginable. This is probably his most well-known strength. Thanks to his large amount of command normals, Nash has far more ways to punch and kick people from a distance than the average character. At midrange, Nash has a f mk sobat similar to Guile's, a long-ranged cr mk, and a slow but safe and damaging f hk. From far range, Nash has two tools that stand out heavily- f hp and mk sonic scythe. While mk scythe is great on normal hit, f hp provides better reward on counterhit in return for much worse reward on normal hit. Both moves MUST be spaced well to be safe, so be careful with them. Mk scythe benefits greatly from his VS2; it gains much more range, becomes much safer on block, and gains an extra hit, allowing it to be hit confirmed raw into V-Trigger or CA. 2. Nash has excellent buffers. Many people do not know this, but Nash's buffer game is extremely good and reliable; the only thing keeping it from being as good as that of G or Kolin is the relatively low reward he gets from successful buffers. Nash has two particularly strong options in this regard: st mp xx mk scythe and st lp xx ex tragedy assault. The former is almost 100% reliable and will work even if whiff punishing very extended limbs (will work even on max range Birdie st hp whiff punishes. The latter works at very far range for a buffer from a light normal; it will work as a whiff punish on Birdie's st hp if done just barely outside max range of that normal. The biggest issue with this buffer is that it requires tight execution and, if failed, leaves Nash at -23 on block. Still, used properly, it's a very strong tool. Both of these options lead to much better damage provided Nash has a V-Trigger on deck. 3. Nash has a unique and potent projectile game. Sonic boom may not be as good as Guile's, and it doesn't travel as fast as, say, Ryu's hadoken. However, due to the potency of Nash's VS1 (bullet clear) he can still use it to win projectile wars against just about anyone. Nash's hp and ex booms are especially unique in that they have potential as pressure tools. Hp boom is very slow at 23 frames of startup, but has extremely low recovery, allowing Nash to dash behind it for pressure. It also has great use as a meaty option and combo tool in the corner. EX boom (aka sonic break) gives Nash the option to throw a second projectile at varying speeds based on the button he uses. Since it is +2 on block and moves Nash very far forward, he can use it in the corner after b mk to essentially force a 1-bar throw loop. 4. Nash's anti-airs are top notch. While he lacks a dp or flash kick, Nash has a ton of anti air options all of which are strong with unique benefits. Cr mp, his most standard AA, is very quick and reliable with a hitbox that reaches decently far back. It special cancels, so he can cancel into sonic boom after a successful AA to force the opponent to take some chip damage. EX sonic scythe is a frame 6 move with air invulnerability starting on its first active frame. Since it does not need a dp input to be performed, it's a perfectly good AA even though it isn't air invuln for its first 5 frames. The hitbox is ENORMOUS on it; it will catch people jumping from all ranges, and due to its high reach and long amount of active frames, it will catch divekicks and other attempts to mess with Nash's AA timing. St mk and st hk are slower than cr mp but cover far and close jumps respectively; unlike cr mp, they float the opponent for a very long time on hit. This allows Nash to dash in after landing them and still be plus, which is very strong. Not many characters can do this. For extremely far jumps, Nash's f lk (bazooka knee) serves as a very solid AA. This works well with Nash's slow moving projectiles. Finally, to deal with crossup attempts, Nash has an air throw which creates a lot of space when it connects. Nash can easily set up his VS2 or hp boom approach should he land this. 5. Nash's pressure and frame traps are scary. A five frame medium that's +2 on block? Check. A +3 on block heavy normal? Check. A highly hit confirmable six frame medium? Check. A plus on block meterless special once he has v-skill? Check. A command jump attack that lets him keep pressuring for free* if the opponent doesn't react and AA it? Got that too. Don't forget his +2 ex booms with essentially negative pushback on block. If Nash has the resources, he can make you not press buttons for quite a while. 6. Nash's VT1 is extremely flexible and leads to solid damage. Nash's VT1 is great for a few reasons. First of all, it's cheap, which lets him utilize V-Reversals (which he MUST do to survive) and still have access to it. Second, it's the only VT in the game which doesn't go through 20% activation scaling. It only adds 10% scaling to a combo, letting Nash get much bigger combo damage than he normally has any right to get. Third, it lets him convert off of many tools he doesn't normally get to convert off of- frame traps into boom, cr mk, ex tragedy assault, and lk/mk scythe, to name a few. Fourth, it's a solid defensive option with its frame 1 throw invulnerability and frame 4 full invulnerability. Fifth, it's a great anti-projectile tool. In addition to all this, it gives him great extra damage to BNBs, gives him many tricky mixups and resets (especially in neutral from far ranges) has solid synergy with his VS2, and allows him to switch sides and reclaim the space he often loses while trying to keep his opponents at bay. It may not do anything crazy- it's no G VT1- but the sheer versatility this trigger offers makes it essential to his toolkit. Plus, it looks cool! He literally teleports behind you! 7. Nash has a very strong and long-ranged dash. Even after the nerfs, Nash's dash is still very good. This is crucial since it helps compensate for his terrible walkspeed. Although he cannot easily make small positioning adjustments, he can always dash and then choose the appropriate option at the range he ends up at (and he has a tool for just about any range. WEAKNESSES: Nash crumbles under pressure, with arguably the worst close-range defense of any SFV character. At least G, in comparison, has a standard V-Reversal to knock people off of him. With no 3 frame normal, no strike-invincible reversal apart from CA, terrible walkspeed, and low health and stun, Nash dies in a heartbeat once you get in on him. You CANNOT afford to be reckless with Nash. One mistake is all it takes. Nash's walkspeed is horrendous. This is an issue on defense and on offense. On defense, it means Nash is very bad at escaping pressure safely. On offense, it means his stagger pressure is terrible and he is unable to shimmy like many other characters. Combine this with a lack of a true tick throw, and what do you get? 3. Nash's close-range midscreen mixups are very weak. To beat delayed tech, Nash has to go for risky options like overheads, delayed meaties, and neutral jumps. He can't shimmy for his life. This wouldn't be so awful if he had a cancellable cr mk like Laura, but his only cancels into VT. This means that delayed tech and back walking are extremely good at shutting down most of Nash's midscreen mixup options (unless he has VT of course. Nash's VT2 is not good. I know a lot of Nash players are going to give me flak for this, since his VT2 does have some utility over VT1, but it's just not nearly as good. It is okay for zoning since it gives him potent conversions off anti-air ex scythe as well as the ability to whiff cancel from non-ex booms, but VT1 also is good for zoning while also being great at many other things. VT2 may be better for zoning but that doesn't justify the extra cost, especially not on a character as frail as Nash. By the time he gets those 3 bars, chances are he needs to make a comeback, not zone- and VT2 is simply not good for that. EDIT: As to above paragraph, please see the comment thread below started by u/dahteabagger. He gives a decent argument towards the utility of VT2. That's about it as far as his weaknesses go. There aren't many of them, but they're each so bad that they drag him down substantially. Still, if you work hard as Nash and make sure your neutral is pristine, you can make him look untouchable. I want to talk for a bit about the balance philosophy of Nash and why it lends to a general perception of weakness. Simply put, Nash is a character designed around many small strengths and a small amount of enormous weaknesses. Season one Nash was different- he was a character of a few extreme strengths rather than many minor ones. This makes it difficult to evaluate the viability of a character like Nash. It's very easy to see what he fails at; it's hard to comprehend all the many little places where he succeeds. Even as a player, when you lose with Nash, it's usually in one long horrifying sequence where you die quickly and painfully; this is much easier to remember than the slow neutral slog that you win by slowly and effectively chipping the opponent down from a distance. I have very often seen the following argument given for why Nash is a bad character: Nash will forever be bad until they fix his core weaknesses. Give him a 3f normal, an invincible reversal, or faster walkspeed, and only then will he be viable. If you don't do that, you have to give him his season 1 mk scythe or season 1 frame 2 invuln on VT1. Nothing else will be good enough to make Nash viable. His current gameplan doesn't work in SFV, a game where you need powerful mixups and/or great defense to be viable. There are three main issues I take with this argument- and please, feel free to debate me in the comments. I know this is a bit of a hot take. For starters, Nash's defense and offense are only bad up close. From further away, his excellent buffers and anti-airs are the best defense you can ask for. This is a similar situation to G. From a distance, Nash's classic VT1 ex boom side switch mixup is a fantastic 50/50 that leads to great damage on hit with very low risk involved. The main issue with it is that it only works if Nash has at least half a screen's worth of distance (if not more. Second, there is NOTHING stopping Nash's theoretical design from being viable. Just look at season one Nash! That was a character with a neutral so insanely strong that it carried him to at least high tier. His old dash did admittedly give him the ability to mix up in a way he can no longer do, but my point still stands. Consider a world where Nash gets neutral tools so insanely powerful that nobody can touch him. At that point, who cares about mixups and defensive options? Just because SFV's system favors merciless offense doesn't mean that, with bonkers enough stats, a character couldn't break that mold. Consider season 3 Guile and Menat. Sure, they did have some decent offensive potential, but a large part of what made them so strong was their dominance in neutral. Guile's sobat and Menat's st hp were as integral to their gameplan as their V-Triggers were. The thing is, this is what the devs keep doing with Nash. They keep buffing his pokes and anti-airs. As a result, nobody will ever think he's good- his changes are too subtle. However, this is imo an issue with human perception, and not with Nash. Changes like buffed boom damage, better VT1 combos, hit confirmable mediums, and better anti-airs DO add up. People just don't like to process change until they either see the change they're looking for, see direct evidence to contradict their theories (e. g. tournament results) or hear differing opinions from theirs that come from authority figures. I'm not trying to say Nash is good. Imo he's a solid mid-tier. What I do implore y'all to do is to lab chars, to check sfvsim and sfvdiff (INCREDIBLE tools, hats off to Wydd) and to form your own opinions and not parrot hate towards the devs who are often trying their best. Lastly, I think that Nash doesn't necessarily need to be an incredible character. Maybe giving him an invincible reversal would make him top tier- but would that be good for the game? Personally, I don't think so. I like the way Nash is designed and I think he's fun and rewarding to play as-is. If you're going to buff Nash, I think the way the devs are doing it now is great- give him small improvements here and there while avoiding straying too far from his core design. I'm no Emezie- I don't like all the decisions Capcom makes. I think that Juri was treated tragically this season, while Rashid's VS2 is a nightmare (if not for tournaments then definitely for online play. Still, I think they're doing a good job with my favorite undead edgelord, and I hope y'all can see the value in him that I see.

YouTube. Does anyone know the music at 1:48. Vicious winds whipped the dusty landscape into a frenzy. Rocks howled and the sparse grasses whistled, voicing their distress, but to no avail. It was one of the more bitter features of Delannut, a planet known for its inhospitable disposition. Not that it mattered much; Calenium formed en masse in the hollows and flats of the land, which meant that it would be settled regardless of the weather. The precious mineral was worth a few months of discomfort to the worker that collected it- it was worth even more to the multitude of private companies that vied for a monopoly on the planet and the rights to brute mining operations. So far, though, none had succeeded, and the planet remained in the horrifying limbo that was the public domain, free for every settler with the capital and guts to make landfall. They didnt often last long. Dry, unforgiving, and a dismal shade of brown, Delannut was like a blot on the otherwise fair reputation of livable planets- it passed the settling standards, but just barely. The listing in the registry for planets available to be settled in was as follows. ‘Delannut: High-effort, labor intensive, mortal risk. Not recommended. Horizontal hail the size of teeth pelted everything from the ground to a height of ten meters. Gravity fluctuated constantly due to the unrest in the planets core and warping magnetic fields. Wind whisked away moisture to be deposited in sinkholes that filled in with muck and stone, only to burst years later from gas buildup. There were no clouds. There was no thriving ecosystem. There was only the red giant floating angrily in the sky, set on burning the planet to a crisp; and it would one day succeed. Deep in the flats walked a figure, swathed in black and khaki, wrapped from head to foot. The figure was humanoid and walked with a strange gait that could come from anything from a botched surgery to a rock in its shoe. It took the pelting hail in stride, making no sound but the constant trudge of boot on coarse sand. Above the flats sat a small dwelling- or to be more precise, the entry to a dwelling. It was a wide and thick platform of crete set into the rock some twenty meters long and shaped like a landing pad. Markings lay on it for measurements in twisting letters, and the very center of it bore the wear of movement. Inside, Enneth studied the figure from the beaten lenses of weather cameras set about the perimeter of her home. She was a Vennedie, a tall and thin-limbed being from one of the many gas clusters that scattered the galaxy. Her birth, as with most Vennedie, had been a sad affair- sad in that another number would be added to the list of the hungry of their kind. Vennedie, however, would not settle in and be sad with the rest of them. Her optimism had led her to take chances where they around her did not, and after a few years of hunger and calculated risk, Enneth had obtained a ship and settlers permit. She didnt want to be rich. She just didnt want to be hungry. The figure came closer, and she studied it carefully. It was a human, of that she was sure- none of the other settlers were dumb or desperate enough to come out during a squall like this after the solar flare that had wiped out all the radio communications. A single misstep would be quickly followed by death of exposure or dehydration, whichever came first. Most werent able to get back up after falling on this planet. Humans, though, always seemed to stand back up. The figure came to the center of her pad, and Enneth pulled the handle to lower it. Whether they were friendly or not would be determined, but there was a single rule of hospitality on this planet- talk inside. Cleaning operations buzzed and cleared her entryway and the figure stepped inside. Enneth pulled away from her command module and met it within the main quarters, which were small and sparse indeed. Enneth stood opposite the bulky figure. She only had two pairs of clothing, what she now wore and her suit for collecting Calenium. Neither were in good shape. Her deep blue limbs had horizontal yellow stripes on the upper portions, and the thinness of her body must have been apparent. Vennedie were already thin to begin with, but their bodies reacted similarly to humans in the absence of nutrition. Her ribs were readily apparent, even through her clothes. The human spoke, muffled by the multiple layers of clothing that wrapped about it. “Is your radio down? ” She paused. Had the human not been aware of the flare? “Yes, its down. The flare fried my safestop, and I ran out of extras two weeks ago. ” “Do you need supplies? ” “... ” “What kind? ” Enneth didnt hesitate. Withholding information in this sort of situation would be stupid. “Food. Ive been subsiding on quarter rations for two weeks now. I only have a few days left. ” The human reached into the depths of its garments and pulled out a lump of dehydrated nutrients the size of a brick and handed it to her. Enneth took it- it was heavy. Absurdly heavy. How had the human carried this so far? “That should keep you for another week until I get back. Hows your water supply? ” “Its holding. ” “Good. Here. ” The figure pulled something else from the depths of its coat and held it out to her- it sat, shining with the light of deliverance, in the humans ungloved hand. She pulled the spherical device with its two grounding points from the humans palm while studying its fingers, trying to discern if it was male or female. She couldnt tell- didnt know enough about their physiology. Did both males and females have nails? Or were they sexually dimorphic? “Thank you. ” “Mmm. Anything else? ” “No, I dont think so-” The human turned around and trudged back out into the entryway. Enneth set down the brick of nutrients and stumbled past her single couch to human. “Wait-” “What? The next unit is twenty miles away. I need to get moving. ” “How did you keep your safestops from frying? Why are you out here? You could get hurt. ” “Faraday cage, you should have one too. Send me back up, please. Ill be back in a week with more food. ” She held the entry portal open, insistent. “You could get hurt. One slip-” “Im aware. Send me up. ” “Why are you doing this? ” The figure paused, then started fitting its gloves back on. “My neighbor died. Water pump busted, radio out, no backups and too scared to leave without radio. Found him a week after the fact, all shriveled up beside the door. ” The humans voice lowered. “A mile away. One damned mile. I could have checked in eight different times, but I didnt. ” There was a moment of silence. Enneth stepped back from the entryway. “Has… Anyone else. ” “No. You were the closest to running out of food, but not by much. Ill be back. ” Enneth allowed the door to close and pushed the handle to raise the platform. Howling winds assaulted the platform anew, but the figure stood still like one of the scarred rock formations until the it came level with the rest of the pad. Then the human started walking, away from where it had come, down onto the flats. Enneth watched the figure go; she saw the wind formation form, but had no way to warn the human. She cursed at herself for not immediately replacing the safestop as a dust devil, filled with rocks the size of fists, barreled over the human and knocked it to the ground. She watched, helpless, as the form was pelted with stones until the dust devil whirled onward and dissipated. There was nothing but the constant scrabble of scree and gravel for a few minutes as Delannut carried on its harsh selection. Enneth sat, eyes glued to the low-quality screens, unable to accept that the dead figure on the ground was the human that had just saved her. It was good that she hadnt accepted it, because it wasnt true. First were the arms, then the legs, raising the human to four points above the ground. The wind howled with rage and flung dirt and stone and sand, but still the human moved. Then one of the legs came up- the right one- and with a heave the human stood, brushed itself off, placed its hands in its pockets and continued the dreary trudge in the wasteland spotted by riches. Enneth left the screen when she could no longer make out the humans form. She allowed herself to eat her first full meal in weeks, then carefully replaced the safestop, ran diagnostics, and activated her radio. As in the aftermath of most solar flares, the local community was in disarray- but it wasnt nearly as bad as it had been on previous occasions. Enneth signed in and marked herself safe. Their local community wasnt massive- maybe some seventy or so units- but more than half of them were back online. The recovery rate was never that high, or so quick. She checked the local map- there, in a spiralling connect-the-dots pattern, were the settlers marked safe and back online by date and time. Some had been fine, but many were reporting their recovery with notes regarding a human visitor. Enneth added to the notes, then sat back in her chair. She needed to find out what a Faraday cage was- and, if possible, get the personal line of the human so she could thank it properly. Outside, the great red sun beat down with a fury and the sparse, tough shrubs writhed in protest. Anything that grew bent in the direction of the wind, if it was constant- if it wasnt, the plants warped and twisted, but still made their way upwards. The air was thick with dust, the ground chaotic in swirls and undulating patterns from movement. Spherical stones reaching up to the knee ground their way slowly across the landscape, this way and that, meandering on their path towards erosion. And, trudging stoically through the dismal brown of the Calenium flats, was the tightly-wrapped black and khaki figure of a human. Author's Note: I finally read Dune.
