user Rating 7,9 / 10. Movie Info There, but for the grace of God, goes Maud, a reclusive young nurse whose impressionable demeanor causes her to pursue a pious path of Christian devotion after an obscure trauma. Now charged with the hospice care of Amanda, a retired dancer ravaged by cancer, Maud's fervent faith quickly inspires an obsessive conviction that she must save her ward's soul from eternal damnation - whatever the cost. Making her feature film debut, writer-director Rose Glass cannily lures the audience into this disturbed psyche, steadily setting up her veritable diary of a country nurse for an unnerving and ultimately shocking trajectory. Morfydd Clark (also at the Festival in The Personal History of David Copperfield) portrays the sanctimonious Maud with an intense stoicism that belies a disquieting vulnerability, as Maud desperately vies for absolution and solidarity from her embittered patient (an enthralling Jennifer Ehle, also at the Festival in Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies). Glass tenderly captures this relationship with an empathetic gaze that first assumes an ethereal, dreamlike atmosphere - but it isn't long before Maud's dogmatic candor incites an irreconcilable friction that spirals her mind into a suffocating confluence of creeping doubt and paranoia. As Glass tightens the screws on her misguided martyr, well-placed nods are made to religious horror forerunners like William Friedkin's The Exorcist, further contributing to the film's increasingly dread-filled malaise. And when this insidious fever climatically breaks, the consequences are devastating and terrifying in equal measure. UK. score 245 Votes. Duration 1H 24minutes. actor Lily Frazer, Jennifer Ehle.

Meet Maud, a spooky private-care nurse who’s a little … horny for Christ! In Saint Maud, the newest horror offering from A24, writer-director Rose Glass presents a movie about an in-home nurse (Morfydd Clark) who’s just trying to pray, do good, and save the soul of her mischievous ward (Jennifer Ehle). (And that’s before a Billie Eilish song plays! ) Per the movie’s log line: “Saint Maud is a chilling and boldly original vision of faith, madness, and salvation in a fallen world. The Story and History of Saint Maud The story and history of Saint Maud. This princess was daughter of Theodoric, a powerful Saxon count. Her parents placed her very young in the monastery of Erford, of which her grandmother Maud was then abbess. Our Saint remained in that house, an accomplished model of all virtues, till her parents married her to Henry, son of Otho, Duke of Saxony, in 913, who was afterwards chosen king of Germany. He was a pious and victorious prince, and very tender of his subjects. Whilst by his arms he checked the insolence of the Hungarians and Danes, and enlarged his dominions by adding to them Bavaria, Maud gained domestic victories over her spiritual enemies more worthy of a Christian and far greater in the eyes of Heaven. She nourished the precious seeds of devotion and humility in her heart by assiduous prayer and meditation. It was her delight to visit, comfort, and exhort the sick and the afflicted; to serve and instruct the poor, and to afford her charitable succor to prisoners. Her husband, edified by her example, concurred with her in every pious undertaking which she projected. After twenty-three years' marriage God was pleased to call the king to himself, in 936. Maud, during his sickness, went to the church to pour forth her soul in prayer for him at the foot of the altar. As soon as she understood, by the tears and cries of the people, that he had expired, she called for a priest that was fasting to offer the holy sacrifice for his soul. She had three sons: Otho, afterwards emperor; Henry, Duke of Bavaria; and St. Brunn, Archbishop of Cologne. Otho was crowned king of Germany in 937, and emperor at Rome in 962, after his victories over the Bohemians and Lombards. The two oldest sons conspired to strip Maud of her dowry, on the unjust pretence that she had squandered the revenues of the state on the poor. The unnatural princes at length repented of their injustice, and restored to her all that had been taken from her. She then became more liberal in her alms than ever, and founded many churches, with five monasteries. In her last sickness she made her confession to her grandson William, the Archbishop of Mentz, who yet died twelve days before her, on his road home. She again made a public confession before the priests and monks of the place, received a second time the last sacraments, and, lying on a sack-cloth, with ashes on her head, died on the 14th of March in 968. Feast Day of Saint Maud The Feast Day of Saint Maud is March 14. The origin of Feast Days: most saints have specially designated feast days and are associated with a specific day of the year and these are referred to as the saint's feast day. The feast days first arose from the very early Christian custom of the annual commemoration of martyrs on the dates of their deaths at the same time celebrating their birth into heaven.

Synopsis Never Waste Your Pain Having recently found God, self-effacing young nurse Maud, arrives at a plush home to care for Amanda, a hedonistic dancer left frail from a chronic illness. When a chance encounter with a former colleague throws up hints of a dark past, it becomes clear there is more to sweet Maud than meets the eye. Cast Crew Details Genre Director Producers Writer Cinematography Popular reviews More A slender but unholy cross between “First Reformed” and “The Exorcist, ” Rose Glass’ taut and trembling “Saint Maud” transmutes a young woman’s spiritual crisis into such a refined story of body horror that genre fans might feel like they’re having a religious experience. Of course, even the most overzealous viewers will find there’s always room for doubt — and that’s where the Devil gets in. A palliative care nurse in a dreary town somewhere along the British coast, the intensely devout Maud (a divine Morfydd Clark) is doing her best to seal the area around her soul. That seems to be one hell of a struggle. Soft-spoken but vibrating with serial killer intensity, Maud seldom opens her mouth when she’s… AFI Fest - Film #2 Morfydd Clark as Maud was not compelling. Jennifer Ehle as Amanda was stagnant. The upside down shots were irrelevant. Deciding to stay up for this midnight movie proved to be a waste of time. It didn't even feel like a real film. I did like the beer tornadoes, though. One of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. It’s brilliant by any standard, but I can’t get over the fact that this is Rose Glass’ debut. Her direction is so confident, always certain and commanding of your attention. The performances she gets from her actors are equally strong, our lead being an absolute force of nature. There are a few sequences where the writing becomes thin, but this remains a fascinating story. Easily one of the best uses of voice-over here, too, as it’s not narration at all. It instead creates a space for our protagonist’s prayers to be elevated in a palpable way. Incredibly suspenseful and entertaining in a way that’s only enhanced by its intriguing religious themes. The scares are terrifying in the moment, but it’s the more spiritual aspect of the horror that really gets you. This one’s gonna be hard to shake. Margaret White: The Early Years, God Told Me Too... There's been a bit of renaissance of religious horror movies over the last few years and Rose Glass's debut feature broadly falls into that category too, following the increasingly traumatic life of Maud; a pious young hospice nurse who forms an obsessive bond with the woman under her care, cancer patient Amanda. It's not exactly original, drawing strongly on films like Misery, Repulsion and the intense psychodramas of Bergman ( Cries and Whispers springs to mind), but it's the skill of the execution and an excellent, nuanced performance by Morfydd Clark that make it such a dark treat. The film leaves you in little doubt that Maud is highly disturbed, but exactly… Sturdy but ultimately another devotion-or-psychosis play. The agony and the ecstasy. Unnerving, reverie drone horror where a young hospice worker feels the passion of God run through her. Incredibly photographed and atonally scored, it becomes downright hypnotic while still integrating some old school demonic jump scares. Paul Schrader wept. Recent reviews Loved it even more 2nd time round. Creepy, funny, sad, it might be one of my favourite psychological / body horrors of recent years This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. It’s lit. taut, rigid religiosity (complete w/ god-gasms! ) through the lens of visceral horror. a modern reflection on the spiritual psyche of the crusaders, one of the most vile group of humans ever to walk the earth. hard to believe this is Rose Glass's first film. stunning. Well that fucked me up. An unsettling reminder that body horror and spiritual horror aren’t opposites — they’re roommates. A fine horror film, but the end makes it just another psychological horror movie that's afraid to commit either way and would rather once again pose the question "was any of that real or just in her head? " for the umpteenth time. Before that end, it's an interesting look at faith to cope with trauma, with characters that bring out both the best and the worst in ine another. The first half is more of a characterpiece with barely any horror tropes, while the second half starts throwing them at you more and more over the top as we approach the end. Some of it works, and looks great, other times it's almost silly due to how seriously it takes itself. I like and appreciate the fact that these small horror films still get made, especially by giving women a chance to direct, but I think both Rose Glass and horror filmmaking can do better. And I hope they will. A brooding slow-burn spiritual horror dealing in guilt and shame. Squeamish beware. Saw this at TIFF Midnight Madness and pretty psyched it got picked up by A24! Super on brand for them. But they need to be careful they don't screw up the marketing the way they did with The Witch. It made a ton of money, but people had mixed feelings afterwards because they were expecting one thing when the movie was another Popular Lists A24 - Complete Filmography Full list of A24's filmography, chronologically.
