Smart and spritely, feminist and funny. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories by and about women I’m “biast” (con): nothing (what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) I can’t sleep until you get married. ” So says Ziba Husseini (the ever spectacular Shohreh Aghdashloo: Star Trek Beyond, Rosewater) to her daughter, Nousha (Tara Grammy). Now, Nousha is not a youngster; she is, in fact, a successful lawyer in Los Angeles, an adult woman who knows her own mind and her own needs… and nowhere in there exists any thought or desire to get married. Certainly not to any of the nice (read: dull and conservative) Iranian men her parents — there’s also dad, Reza (Houshang Touzie: Argo) — keep trying to arrange for her. (The way she scares off the prospective grooms and their parents in hello-nice-to-meet-you-now-let’s-get-married get-togethers is snarkily hilarious. ) The wedding dress may be hideous, but at least the groom is gorgeous. But now Nousha is living with artist, deejay, and utter delight Alex Talbot (Christopher O’Shea: Patriots Day), and when her parents find out, they are mortified. They can just about deal with him not being Iranian and not being Muslim. But cohabiting without benefit of wedlock? Unacceptable. Quick nuptials must be organized. Ziba is suddenly in her glory, Reza only slightly less so: their only daughter is getting married! Call it My (Not So) Tiny Little Persian Wedding. Of course Sara Zandieh’s thoroughly charming feature debut — she wrote it with Stephanie Wu — deserves to stand on its own, but a comparison with My Big Fat Greek Wedding is inevitable, not least because this movie is from the same producers and everyone is playing up the connection. That comparison isn’t actually any bad thing: both movies are full of life, celebrating human universals of family and love, and embracing the differences that make the world so interesting and so much fun. (Some of the Persian touches being deployed for the wedding are as funny and overblown as they are poignant, touchstones of immigrants, as Nousha’s parents are, trying to retain a flavor of home in their new life. ) It’s a wonderful reminder, much needed in our angry, insular times, that the melting pot is one of the best aspects of American culture… and it would be amazing if this movie could be even half as successful as that earlier one. The movie’s feminist chops are terrific, too, as Nousha drives herself a little crazy trying to balance what she wants and needs out of romance with what her more conservative parents, and the less forgiving world they come from, imagine for her. Bucking expectations is never easy… but she loves her parents, and this sneakily wise movie finds a way for Nousha to navigate her difficult path, though it is not without bumps along the way. And some things that other films might have cast as cringeworthy — like Alex’s divorced mom, Maggie (Rita Wilson: Gloria Bell, Dawn Patrol), crushing on Nousha’s handsome uncle, Saman (Maz Jobrani: The Interpreter, 13 Going on 30), who has exotically flown in from Tehran — are handled with a lot more aplomb than the rom-com genre has led us to expect, especially given some of the other over-the-top bits of humor the film indulges in. (Those bits are pretty shockingly feminist as well. ) Smart and spritely, A Simple Wedding is a real treat, one that makes a real effort to find crosscultural common ground, and so it feels very welcome right now. All gender stereotypes are thrown out the window. Some characters state that sexuality is a spectrum rather than a label. Nousha is fully in charge of her sexuality. But she also makes some choices that may feel iffy: taking drugs, drinking heavily, hooking up on a first date, etc. Intended-to-be-funny conversations about sex and male anatomy, including close-ups of crotch bulges, a drawing, and rude jokes. Nousha often makes the first move, whether it's a first kiss or moving to sex. Several playful sex scenes in which characters are in their underwear and kiss/talk about sex, but nothing explicit shown on camera. Language includes "p---ies, " "d--k, " "f--k, " and "s--t. " A BMW and an Apple laptop have logos front and center, implying product placement. Drinking, Drugs & Smoking Nousha buys and takes unidentified drugs on the dealer's promise that it "will make you feel great. " She later acts slightly eccentric and says she's "tripping, " but there are no consequences (or rewards). She and Alex smoke pot. Social drinking throughout, with a couple of moments that present potentially misleading notions about "liquid courage": Alex's mom drinks out of her flask in the middle of the day, which leads to a love connection, and Nousha slams martinis to get through a set-up date with the intent to have sex (but, many drinks in, she chooses not to, asks him to zip her up, and leaves without incident). Nousha worries whether her parents will accept their relationship -- and whether her and Alex's cultural differences are too great to overcome. Is it any good? This modern-day love story is wonderfully millennial: It’s social-justice oriented, with diverse characters and a progressive approach to dating and sex. It nails millennials' language, sense of humor, and approach to problems. Even when the comedy goes broad, the acting and dialogue are fully authentic -- hopefully, we'll be seeing more of the cast and writer-director Sara Zandieh. While there's been a recent revolution when it comes to reinventing the romantic comedy, A Simple Wedding  actually follows a formula but updates it for modern audiences. It’s hard to think of too many (or any) light movies with positive portrayals of Iranian Americans, or with a Muslim woman as the adorkable lead, or, for that matter, any in which a heterosexual girl marries a bisexual guy. Romcoms often have a "gay guy best friend, " but how many times does the female lead have two lesbian best friends who are married with a daughter (and no issues)? Alex's gay father and stepfather aren't stereotypical, either. In fact, the greatest thing about all of the characters here is how comfortable they are in their own skin. So millennial! Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about how cultural and generational differences are typically depicted in the media. How does that compare with real life? How can that kind of difference create problems -- or opportunities for new traditions? What kind of diversity and representation did you notice in A Simple Wedding? Why is it important for all kinds of people to see someone like themselves on the big screen? Does it matter if they're portrayed in a positive or likable light? Talk about how the movie portrays drug and alcohol use. Is it glamorized? Are there consequences? Why does that matter? “A Simple Wedding, ” which could have easily — and perhaps more aptly —been called “My Big Fat Persian Wedding, ” begins amusingly, driven by the engagingly hapless Nousha (a game Tara Grammy), an L. A. housing attorney who tries but can’t adhere to the cultural traditions of her Iranian American parents ( Shohreh Aghdashloo, Houshang Touzie) about love and marriage. But when Nousha falls for the unlikely Alex (Christopher O’Shea), an offbeat artist she secretly moves in with (in what feels like record time, even for a movie), Nousha’s parents are more worried about their daughter’s honor than that her beau is not Iranian. So a wedding is instantly set into motion and, of course, it’s a recipe for disaster, one that plays out in some contrived and implausible ways. The film’s second act ends too soon leaving an overlong third act more focused on the predictable romance between Alex’s divorced mother ( Rita Wilson, a producer on “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) and Nousha’s visiting uncle (Maz Jobrani) than on the Nousha-Alex dynamic. To its credit, the script, by director Sara Zandieh and Stephanie Wu, works hard at inclusivity. Unfortunately, while a lesbian couple is fun, the gay men feel like a throwback and Alex’s bisexuality, which could have provided an intriguing and credible complication, goes nowhere.
