So, my entitled parent story is about my dad. My father is a VERY entitled man, he basically thinks the world revolves around pleasing him. So I have 2 stories for you. Nr1. When I was 9 and my little sister 5, my parents were still married and we would go to France on our holiday every year. This year, it was my father's idea to take my mom's best friend, let's call her Anya, with us and make it a combined family trip. My mom loved the idea and she invited Anya, her friend John (who had a huge crush on Anya, so he was hoping it would blossom into a relationship) and Anya's came along and we all had a blast. After 2 weeks we drove home. Once home my dad took all the luggage inside except his own. My mom asked what was going on and he said "I'm leaving you for Anya. "Apparently he had been sleeping with my Anya for over 6 months now and wanted to move in with her. When my mom asked why he held up the charade in France when he already knew he was going to leave, he said: "Because then we wouldn't have gone on vacation! I said to Anya to invite John so you wouldn't get suspicious. " Anya and my mom also work together, so my mom had to work with the woman who "stole" her husband. My dad would pick Anya up from work all lovey dovey with Anya's daughter on his shoulders while my mom had to does have somewhat of a happy ending though. My mom met an amazing man, and married him 6 years later, while my dad was kicked out by Anya very quickly (she's the kind of woman who likes married men, but once they leave their wives for her, she kicks them out). Nr2. So fast forward some 20 years, my dad and I never had a good relationship. But I tried to keep it civil so my children could have a dad, now remarried (not with Anya haha) owns a home in France where he spends most of his free time. In summer, when the kids are off school, we usually spend about a week at his home in France before moving on for our own vacation. This year however, we planned to go to Poland so we wouldn't be staying pissed my dad off, he called me about this and the conversation that followed still angers me till this day. Me: Hi Dad, what's up? Dad: You know what's up! Why are you not coming to France this year?! Me: Well Dad, we're planning to go to Poland this year, and France is just a big detour for us. Dad: When are you going to Poland? Me: From the 25th of July till the 17th of August, why? Dad: Then you can easily take a week off before that and come to France! Me: Dad, you know there's only so many vacation days and we can't take more than 3 weeks. Dad: But the kids are free of school! Me: Yeah, maybe they can travel with you, when do you leave? Dad: NO! They can't travel with us, our car is full! *Mind you, they travel in a big Mercedes 608 RV. * Me: Ok, so then what do you expect me to do? Dad: You bring them to France and pick them up a week later! Me: Ok, I guess we could make it a weekend so we can rest for the trip home. Dad: No, I didn't say you guys could stay! If you stay for only 2 nights we'd have to make the beds! And we'd have to cook for 2 more people. Your stepbrothers are already coming with their friends. There's no room. Me: Wait, you're expecting us to make a 26 our round trip, just to drop of the kids? Dad: That's not to much to ask for your father right?! Right?! Me: Bye dad. I'm now 33, and have broken off all contact with my dad. This is just 2 examples of his entitlement, there's SO much more.

To start, tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into The Witcher... First of all—hi! I'm Alyssa from GoodMorhen and the one-woman show behind Breakfast in Beauclair. My gateway into The Witcher Universe was Witcher III: Wild Hunt. I grew up in the US on a steady diet of immersive, open-world video games such as Harvest Moon, Sly Cooper, and Ezio's Assassin's Creed trilogy. What drew me to Wild Hunt was the story and depth of the lore, the opportunity to explore a branching plot, and the inclusion of thoughtful details like beard growth and currency conversion. By day, I'm a product designer who creates apps and websites and I had an absolute geek meltdown when I saw CDPR update the user experience of their inventory menus during my playthrough. Also, duh, Gwent and the absolute bop that is "A Story You Won't Believe"!? Iconic. I'm still waiting on club remixes of the entire Gwent soundtrack. Even though I didn't understand a lot of Geralt's backstory in that first playthrough, CDPR's take on the Witcher fit perfectly into my personal canon of games and primed me for a dive into the source material. 2. What motivated you to get active in the fandom and become a content creator (as @goodmorhen) for this community? Although my entry to The Continent was through the games, I fell in love with The Witcher through the book series. The prose was captivating—even in the English translation, yes, I know, please don't flay me in the comments—and I admired the way Sapkowski wove a massive ensemble cast of characters into a unified tapestry and world. GoodMorhen was originally "Good Morning, Kaer Morhen", a Witcher podcast concept. Fun fact: my brother cleverly gave me the suggestion to truncate it to "GoodMorhen" when I was looking for a short enough Twitter handle for "Good Morning, Kaer Morhen". It brings me infinite amounts of joy to hear the pun translates well into a few other languages! This time last year, I didn't know anyone personally who had heard of or read The Witcher Saga and there were no local resources to realize a podcast. I shelved the idea and pivoted, focusing on something I could do independently that still analyzed the text, which is how GoodMorhen was created as you know it today. I noticed the biggest Witcher accounts, on Instagram specifically, were mostly in -game screenshots and photography. As much as I loved the games, I wanted something about the books and I wanted something free of CDPR's visual language and character designs, which is when I decided to source 18th to 20th century etchings and line illustrations to enhance Sapkowski's work. Fast forward a year later, I feel incredibly fortunate to have met so many wonderful people through GoodMorhen and this community. Introversion and introspection have been a core part of the GoodMorhen brand identity, but I'm an extrovert at heart who looks forward to taking a very social approach to this next project, Breakfast in Beauclair. 3. What can fans expect from Breakfast in Beauclair? What sort of guests do you have lined up? In Breakfast in Beauclair, a global Witcher podcast, our international hanza will travel around the world with our guests for varied and interesting points of view on The Witcher Universe from new readers, hardcore fans, and other Witcher content creators. Our lineup of guests is outstanding—I'm looking forward to introducing them to you though this new medium! The first thirteen episodes are a chapter-by-chapter analysis of the short stories. Witcher content creators who appear include Charlotte of Vengerberg Glamarye from the US, Anita and Karolina of Witcher Kitchen from Poland, and Lars of WitcherFlix from Germany. Along with the five episodes those content creators will guest, three more will be with existing fans, and five episodes will be with new readers. An Open Call for Episode Guests: I'm looking for more guests to cover the Netflix episodes and the saga! 15-30 minute phone interviews will be held for interested individuals around October 2019. If you're interested, fill out this form and I'll reach out in September/October! 4. A beloved member of the fandom, @witcherflix aka Lars, is contributing to your podcast. What can you tell us about the news segment he’ll be providing? Yes! The GOAT! I knew my personal focus and interest was the books, but I wanted to incorporate the Netflix series to the, then unnamed, podcast. I decided early on that it would be best for the fandom and the podcast if I tapped someone who specialized in news surrounding the television series rather than trying to do it all myself. Lars was the first Witcher content creator I befriended through the GoodMorhen Instagram last Fall and I knew that if anyone could do this segment and do an outstanding job of it, it would be him. If you're unfamiliar with his work, Lars has been producing daily (daily!! ) posts about the upcoming Netflix series since December 2017. Wild. He's an absolute rockstar and I've admired his consistency and dedication to the fandom. He's such a pleasure to work with and I'm incredibly fortunate to be partnering with him. Each episode, Lars will contribute a mid-episode news segment, "Tidings from Toussaint", which will summarize key updates surrounding the Netflix series. Whether it's casting rumors, plot developments, or events and awards, Lars has it covered! 5. What are your plans with Breakfast in Beauclair once the show airs? I finally rest, and watch the sun rise on a grateful universe. Kidding. There's no such thing rest once the show airs. (RIP, me. ) Following the first thirteen podcast episodes, which cover the events of The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, we'll go through Netflix's first season episode-by-episode before jumping back into the books with Blood of Elves. We'll cross the Netflix bridge when we get there, but, as I said, I'll be looking for guests to watch and discuss the episodes with me! 6. If you could get anyone from the cast or crew as a guest on your podcast, who would it be and why? If it was just one: Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich! I'd love the opportunity to talk about the vision for the show; her perception of the deep-rooted values that drive each character; the challenges, successes, and failures behind-the-scenes; forks in the production road; and the character choices that the actors have made in bringing The Witcher to life. On the cast side, I'd want to host Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra. I'm sure this show will change their lives and I think it'd be amazing to speak with them on the brink of their next adventure. Who’s your favorite Witcher character and what are you most looking forward to seeing adapted in the series? Milva is, hands down, my favorite Witcher character. Without spoilers, she's appears from the third book in the saga, Baptism of Fire, through the last book, Lady of the Lake. I admire her for her independence, compassion, strength, and vulnerability. Milva embodies this beautiful dichotomy between perceived strength and perceived vulnerability, between confidence and insecurity. Although we get many examples throughout the books, I think her character arc exemplifies the themes of found family and found purpose central to The Witcher Saga. Milva, by JustAnoR I'm most looking forward to seeing Badass, Complex Female Characters™ like Milva, Yennefer, Ciri, and Queens Calanthe and Meve adapted in the series. I'm excited to meet Geralt's Company for the first time. And—as much as I can't stomach most televised battle scenes—I hope we get to see the Battle of the Bridge and the Battle of Brenna. (If it's not 9000% obvious, Baptism of Fire is my favorite book in the entire series and possibly—unapologetically—of all time. ) 8. There's a lot of fantasy out there—what do you think sets The Witcher apart? The Witcher is high fantasy, but it's approachable. It's very human. Sapkowski's dexterity as a writer really shines in character development and dialogue. Despite the complexity of the plot and the expansive, fantastical nature of the world, we, as readers, never lose sight of the questions of morality that drive the events on The Continent. No matter if it's a king or spy, an elf or a vampire, a witcher or witcher-girl, everyone grapples with their own code of ethics. Everyone lives with the consequences of their actions; and, in Sapkowski's writing, those choices and actions feel authentic to the characters' core values. Another aspect of The Witcher Universe I admire is how Sapkowski leverages his ensemble cast. There are plenty of scenes and chapters that none of the main characters appear in and they always enhance the reader's understanding of the greater world and lore. A notable example of this is the character Toruviel, an elf. Throughout all seven books, she appears only a brief handful of times, but manages to have an entire developed character arc. Lastly, The Witcher series has its moments of hilarity, cleverness, and snark from both the characters and narrator; I've genuinely laughed out loud reading it. For high fantasy, it's not always highbrow, solemn, and reverent and I adore those moments—they're what made me fall in love with the series. While everyone in this sub is a Witcher fan, my usual pitch to the uninitiated is: if Harry Potter and Game of Thrones had a Polish baby who was also somehow older than both of them, it would be The Witcher and, my god, you're going to love it. 9. When and where can folks catch new episodes of your podcast? New episodes of Breakfast in Beauclair release every other Thursday beginning 15 August 2019.
