Gershwin's music was phenomenal, the scenes colorful. Eye candy for sure and very artsy.
Two things I think make this a 7.5 and I have to agree with the rating.
Gene Kelly, although a great dancer, in my opinion, is no Fred Astaire.
He is a tap dancer without compare for his time, but he tries to perform too modern a dance and he is not really suited for it. He seems stiff and contrived. I also lay the blame on the choreographer. You can tell that when he taps, he is really in his element. But the modern, At that time) dance, he does not flow in his steps. He was so much more relaxed and fluid in Dancing in the rain.
Leslie Caron, again, a fantastic dancer and does so excellently in the film, but her acting leaves much to be desired. I think the word poor actor is poignant here. I think her and Gene go together well, but her acting threw off quite a few scenes.
All and all the "Live painting" look and feel of Toulouse and others, they were going for, worked very well, but the film does not quite pull one in.
I have always said, the great movies make you forget you are watching one, you are so engrossed.
