This is a journey to the very edge of existence, where the air is thin and the chances of survival are slim. The film is based on a mix of historic hot air balloon flights, with the most significant flight in the film based on the 5 September, 1862, flight of British aeronauts James Glaisher and Henry Coxwell, whose hot air balloon broke the world flight altitude record, reaching about 11, 887 m (38, 999 ft). Filming locations: From Greenwich to Oxford The film was largely shot at the West London Film Studios, but was also filmed on location, with London filming spots including the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, and Regent's Park. The movie also filmed at Wrotham Park and Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, Claydon House in Buckinghamshire, and the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford. Critics response to The Aeronauts: ‘A charming Victorian adventure’ Jeannette Catsoulis from The New York Times calls the film a "charming Victorian ballooning adventure", adding that it's "gorgeous and goofy, fanciful and unrepentantly old-fashioned". Time Out gives it a 4-star rating, with Ellie Walker-Arnott writing that you'll want to "suspend all disbelief, hold tight to the wicker basket and go along for the ride". First of all i have to applaud the cinematography which was out of this world. that being said i found very boring and it never really got going. costume dramas are generally tedious and this slid right in with the multitude that have gone before it. its worth a look but dont expect to much.

So did stars Eddie Redmayne, who plays meteorologist James Glaisher, and Felicity Jones, cast as daredevil pilot Amelia Wren. “Right from the very beginning Felicity was really determined to embrace the physical attributes, the physical side of the performance, ” director Tom Harper said recently at Deadline’s annual The Contenders New York. “She did the vast majority of her own stunts including actually flying in the balloon with Eddie and she climbed out of the basket at 3, 000 feet as well and sat on the hoop of the balloon. ” Deadline’s Pete Hammond asked producer Todd Lieberman if he didn’t have qualms about subjecting his stars to danger at high elevation. “They’re phenomenal, ” Lieberman replied. “It’s worth saying how talented, how dedicated they are, but it’s also worth saying just how great they are as people and that adds just to the beauty of making a movie like this. ” The Aeronauts, released in theaters earlier this month and now streaming on Amazon Prime, reunites the leads from 2014’s The Theory of Everything, which netted an Oscar nomination for Jones and an Oscar win for Redmayne. The earlier film was based on the true story of physicist Stephen Hawking and his wife Jane Hawking; The Aeronauts, too, is inspired by true events. “It’s based on an amalgam of different stories, actually, ” Harper said. “There’s a beautiful book I read called Falling Upwards by Richard Holmes and that sort of recounts some of the first journeys into the skies that humans took in balloons…We’ve taken from a number of different flights and then based around this one flight in 1862 where they got to 36, 000 feet, higher than anyone’s been before or since actually without additional oxygen. ” It’s mighty cold up in that thin atmosphere. Redmayne and Jones got “help” making it appear real. “For a scene like that where they are freezing we had a stage that was set below zero temperature with ice buckets around the stage, ” Lieberman said. “They would put their hands in the ice buckets, go into a freezing environment. So when they’re there the breath coming out is real. The capillary and the redness on their face is a mixture between phenomenal makeup and hair and real blood vessels. Ignore the plaints and complaints about a woman being handed a hero's role in the 19th Century all-male world of science. Just sit back and enjoy this beautiful film.
Yes, it is a woman (gasp! taking the place of a male aeronaut. And the character of Glashier is played by a much younger actor. Oh, the horror. How ever will historians sleep at night?
Is this the first movie that has mooshed around with historical fact? Take it for what it is. The story is compelling, the production is exquisite, and the action is gripping.
So gripping that, at one point, I realized I was wringing my hands, heart thumping, holding my breath and feeling quite overwhelmed with fear for Amelia and company. (Don't forget the pigeons.) What a heroine. (I'm certain her triumph over the elements had to do with women having 30% more fat than men, but that's a discussion not needed here.)
Who cares if this movie shows people going up in a balloon into weather they know will be icy and wet. sans hats or gloves? Who cares if the more discerning of us understand that ice cuts flesh like glass and there's no way *on Earth* much less 37,000 feet above Earth) that anyone could perform such fingerly feats in freezing cold? And again: without gloves.)
I loved this movie. Pure entertainment. And educational, too. Until today I had no idea Glashier or Wren existed. (Okay. Wren is pure fiction, as it turns out, but do we care? Nor did I know that passenger balloons in the 19th Century could rise up into other atmospheres. And the one scene about. quasi-spoiler here. air currents carrying fragile Earthlings that high up was a welcome revelation to me.
If you like the actors, if you like period piece costumes and breath-taking action sequences and don't mind a bit of history being fudged. then watch this movie. It is a most pleasant way to spend 1 hour + 41 minutes.
