Sept de ses réalisations, où il se borne parfois à rester derrière la caméra, sont tirées du répertoire du Barde. Même à une commande hollywoodienne comme Thor, il insuffla une dimension shakespearienne. Lancé jadis par un Henry V d’une vigueur alors révolutionnaire, le revoici avec l’élégiaque All Is True, qui évoque les dernières années du dramaturge, qu’incarne Branagh. Culmination d’une passion? On le lui a demandé. Kenneth Branagh se souvient très précisément de cet instant où sa vie fut irrémédiablement transformée par Shakespeare. Il avait 13 ans. « C’était une production étudiante de Roméo et Juliette. J’y assistais dans le cadre d’une sortie scolaire. Il y a eu ce duel à l’épée en ouverture… je me souviens des étincelles. Mais bien vite, l’adrénaline a laissé place à autre chose… Comment dire? Je suis tombé éperdument amoureux de Juliette. Elle est entrée en scène comme une vision. Je n’étais pas en mesure de saisir l’ampleur de ce qui se produisait en moi. C’était comme être frappé en plein plexus solaire. » Sachant cela, on ne s’étonnera pas que l’une des productions théâtrales charnières du parcours professionnel de Branagh eût justement été Roméo et Juliette, qu’il monta en 1986, à 26 ans, et qui connut un succès tel que l’acteur et metteur en scène put cofonder la Renaissance Theatre Company l’année suivante (avec une reprise triomphale de La nuit des rois). « Nous étions mille étudiants dans la salle, poursuit-il au sujet de l’expérience déterminante qu’il vécut à l’aube de l’adolescence. L’atmosphère était électrique. Nous réagissions à absolument tout ce qui se passait sur scène. J’y repense, et je me dis que ça devait un peu ressembler à cela, lors des créations de Shakespeare au théâtre du Globe. » Un film de chambre Ce lieu est d’ailleurs mentionné plus d’une fois dans All Is True. Et pour cause: lorsque s’ouvre le film, le mythique théâtre vient d’être réduit en cendres lors d’une représentation de Henry VIII (pièce dont l’autre titre est All Is True). On est en 1613, et William Shakespeare, fatigué, rentre dans ses terres de Stratford, n’aspirant plus qu’à une retraite paisible. « Ben [Elton, le scénariste] et moi voulions collaborer sur un projet depuis trente ans. Nous nous sommes connus à l’occasion d’une production de Beaucoup de bruit pour rien, mise en scène par Judi Dench à la Renaissance Theatre Company. À l’époque, Ben m’a reproché d’avoir inventé des répliques, ce qui n’était pas le cas: je l’ai renvoyé au texte original en notant que la prose de Shakespeare pouvait être étonnamment naturelle et conversationnelle. » De l’épisode naquit une amitié durable. Ce fut Kenneth Branagh qui proposa l’idée de All Is True à Ben Elton. « J’imaginais un film de chambre où Shakespeare regagnerait Stratford et ruminerait sur son existence. Nous nous sommes basés sur les faits connus tels qu’ils ont été consignés par la paroisse et avons brodé une fiction “réaliste” autour de ceux-ci. On a donc cet homme célèbre qui reparaît dans un village où il n’a guère vécu, trop occupé par son illustre carrière à Londres… » Or, revenir à Stratford, c’est renouer difficilement avec son épouse Anne Hathaway, habituée à vivre sans lui, et avec leurs filles Judith, célibataire misanthrope, et Susanna, mal mariée à un puritain qui abhorre la profession de son beau-père. C’est aussi faire face à l’absence d’Hamnet, ce fils adoré mort à l’âge tendre de 11 ans. Un ami cher Afin de ressembler davantage au personnage, Kenneth Branagh a eu recours à différentes prothèses et à des maquillages spéciaux, arborant le front dégarni, le nez aquilin, les cheveux mi-longs et la barbichette des portraits de William Shakespeare. Pour autant, All Is True ne manque pas d’humour. « Tenir moi-même le rôle de Shakespeare me semblait relever de l’évidence: j’ai passé pratiquement toute ma vie adulte à essayer de trouver cet homme, à le cerner, à chercher sa voix dans ses personnages. Je perçois Shakespeare comme un ami cher; il a été très bon pour moi. Je dirais que ce film m’a permis de vivre une rencontre très personnelle avec lui, d’où la facture intimiste. Ben, dans son scénario, a su mettre la table pour cette rencontre et je lui en sais gré. » Judi Dench, que Kenneth Branagh connaît également de longue date, comme on l’aura compris, tient le rôle d’Anne Hathaway. Le mot rare mais tranchant, Anne accueille ce mari prodigue avec une irritation polie, une curiosité croissante, puis une affection renouvelée. « Je ne voyais que Judi. J’ai envoyé le scénario à son agent pour qu’il le lui fasse parvenir — elle vit à la campagne et chérit sa tranquillité. Mais avant même de l’avoir reçu, elle m’a contacté pour me dire qu’elle acceptait le rôle et se réjouissait qu’on retravaille ensemble. Une telle confiance était une première pour moi. » Tenir moi-même le rôle de Shakespeare me semblait relever de l’évidence: j’ai passé pratiquement toute ma vie adulte à essayer de trouver cet homme, à le cerner — Kenneth Branagh Fascinante, la courbe d’Anne, ainsi que celles de Judith et de Susanna, la montre tenant tête à ce conjoint qui s’attend à ce qu’elle change ses habitudes afin d’accueillir sa présence désormais. À cet égard, la notion de prise de parole par les personnages féminins, tant orale qu’écrite, constitue l’un des thèmes majeurs du film. Une relecture féministe qui ne correspond peut-être pas aux sensibilités du début du XVIIe siècle (et à l’auteur de La mégère apprivoisée), mais qui donne beaucoup de zeste à certains échanges, sans parler d’un surcroît d’émotion à l’issue d’une révélation dont on s’abstiendra d’éventer la teneur. Fin de cycle? All Is True s’intéresse en outre à la bisexualité alléguée de Shakespeare, enjeu que maints spécialistes contestent avec véhémence, lors d’un splendide tête-à-tête avec Henry Wriothesley, troisième comte de Southampton et le « Fair Youth » des Sonnets de Shakespeare publiés sans son consentement, selon plusieurs érudits. Ian McKellen joue dans cette seule séquence, mémorable, et crée avec Kenneth Branagh un échange poignant. Sous le flegme du présent couve l’émoi de naguère. « À la réalisation, je ne cache pas m’être inspiré d’Orson Welles, avec ces grands-angles exagérant la perspective et ces contre-plongées laissant voir les hauts plafonds. Toutefois, pour cette séquence, je me suis limité à un sobre champ-contrechamp, mais en recourant à deux caméras: je tenais à capter chaque réaction de Ian lorsque je récite le sonnet, et idem pour moi lorsqu’il me le retourne en utilisant un ton si différent que les vers prennent un sens inédit. Vous savez, donner la réplique à des acteurs de la trempe de Judi et d’Ian, c’est un privilège. » D’office, on mentionnait le côté crépusculaire de la production, qui multiplie les plans éclairés comme des tableaux de Rembrandt. Avec ce film lui ayant permis de « rencontrer », pour reprendre son expression, comme jamais auparavant son idole, l’acteur-cinéaste a-t-il l’impression d’être arrivé au terme de sa longue et fructueuse association avec Shakespeare? « Je réponds oui. Mais je me réserve le droit d’adapter une ultime pièce. » Est-ce à dire qu’il estime n’avoir pas encore tout à fait « trouvé » Shakespeare? Après un silence, Kenneth Branagh conclut, sourire dans la voix: « C’est une excellente question. » All Is True (V. O. ) prendra l’affiche le 7 juin.
