Today watching the actual "Turning, " which shares those elements but is, in fact, 100 percent Stay Puft Marshmallow Man free, I experienced countless false scares, but most of them were expected. Based on a novella by Henry Miller, but updated so it takes place in 1994 shortly after Kurt Cobain's suicide, the film is often truly creepy but as usual, had me feeling like Jenny in "Forest Gump, " screaming fruitlessly in my head at the main character to run for her life. When the movie begins, Mackenzie Davis, who herself has a history of growing up without two participating parents as her mom is mentally ill and her dad is deceased, is about to take a nanny/tutor job for a little girl (Brooklynn Prince) who is recently orphaned and who lives in a spider infested, gargoyle-decorated Gothic mansion ("Run, Mackenzie! ") As it turns out, her only guardian (Barbara Marten) who's been "protecting this family for years" is truly terrifying and casually informs Mackenzie that Brooklynn hasn't left the grounds in forever because she doesn't need to. ("Ruuuun, Mackenzie, run fast! ") Compounding things is Brooklynn's creepy older brother (Finn Wolfhard) who arrives unexpectedly home from boarding school and shows no signs of returning. The clincher is when the special effects begin that very night, and in the morning when she asks what happened to the recently deceased groundskeeper is informed that he died "in an accident. " All this would make a normal person hightail it out of there, despite having promised to Brooklynn that she'd stay, but like most characters in horror films/thrillers, Mackenzie has a room temperature IQ. So let the fun begin! As with most protagonists, Mackenzie is fated to speak the truth and be thought insane because of course, haunted houses don't exist, right? But they do, and this means that simply turning the discarded window draperies into playclothes is not going to be enough to woo Finn to her corner. The cast does a fine job, but the ending comes out of left field and had my audience scratching their heads. Not the best thriller, but not the worst I've seen either.
