St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, credited with spreading Christianity across the Emerald Isle in the 5th century and establishing it as the dominant religion. What we know about Patrick comes largely from his written work Confessio. Patrick was born in Roman-occupied Britain around the turn of the 5th century near to a place called Bannavem Taburniae, where his father, a deacon called Calpurnius, and grandfather, a priest called Potitus, lived. The exact location of Bannavem Taburniae is not known, though it's believed by some historians to be near Port Talbot in south Wales. Along with thousands of others, Patrick was kidnapped aged 16 by pirates from Ireland and taken there as a slave, where he herded sheep. While a slave, he became passionately religious. VASILY MAXIMOV/AFP/Getty Images "It was there that the Lord opened up my awareness of my lack of faith, " St Patrick wrote in Confessio. "Even though it came about late, I recognised my failings. So I turned with all my heart to the Lord my God, and he looked down on my lowliness and had mercy on my youthful ignorance. " After six years of captivity, he heard a voice in a dream telling him that he would return to Britain and that his ship was ready, 200 miles away, and he ran away. St Patrick made it back to Britain, and was eventually captured again, though freed shortly afterwards. He reunited with his parents, who begged him to stay, but he had a vision from someone called Victoricus, who carried letters from Ireland and gave him one. It begged him to return. It's thought Patrick travelled to France to study under St Germain, the bishop of Auxerre, and was eventually ordained before he set off as a fully-fledged Catholic missionary. St Patrick travelled around Ireland preaching the Christian faith, trying to convert all he met, baptising people along the way and establishing new churches, eventually becoming a bishop himself. "How has this happened in Ireland? " he wrote in Confessio. "Never before did they know of God except to serve idols and unclean things. But now, they have become the people of the Lord, and are called children of God. The sons and daughters of the leaders of the Irish are seen to be monks and virgins of Christ! " Patrick suffered much during these decades of preaching around Ireland. "At times I gave gifts to kings, over and above what I paid to their sons who travelled with me, " he wrote. "Despite this, they took me and my companions prisoner, and very much wanted to kill me, but the time had not yet come. They stole everything they found in our possession, and they bound me in iron. " Spectators take a selfie as they attend the St Patrick's Day parade in Dublin on March 17, 2015. This year's festivities include parades and 10K runs. PAUL FAITH/AFP/Getty Images The exact date of Patrick's death is unknown and the two potential times it took place are around 30 years apart, the first being around 460, the second around 490. It's thought he died on March 17—which is why that's his feast day, St Patrick's Day, and is celebrated every year. Confessio and another contemporary text written by Patrick, his letter to Coroticus, are the only historical evidence of the real Patrick. However, a number of popular myths and legends were created in the hundreds of years after his death. Among those are stories is one of him using the shamrock— Ireland's national symbol —in his preaching to convert pagans. Another claims he banished all the snakes from Ireland by chasing them into the sea, which is why there aren't any left slithering around. The 7th century monk and Irish historian Muirchú, the biographer of St Patrick, is to blame for much of the cultural mythology surrounding him. He wanted to create a unifying symbol of Irishness and, to him, Patrick was the perfect national figurehead.

History of St. Patrick St. Patrick was born to wealthy parents in the late fourth century. Until the age of 16, he thought of himself as a pagan. He was kidnapped and sold as a slave at this age by Irish marauders. It was during this capture that he turned to God. He managed to escape after being a slave for six years and then studied in a monastery in Gaul for 12 years. This was when he knew that his ‘calling’ was to try and convert all the pagans in Ireland to Christianity. St. Patrick went around Ireland founding monasteries and successfully converting people to Christianity. The Celtic Druids were very unhappy with him and tried to arrest him several times but he always managed to escape. After 30 years of being a missionary in Ireland, he finally settled down in a place called County Down. He died on the 17th of March, AD 461. э. Legend and Folklore Легенды и фольклор Shamrocks, leprechauns and the blarney stone are associated with St. Patrick’s Day. Shamrocks are three-leaved clovers found growing in patches on grass. You are thought to be lucky if you find a four-leaved clover, so do keep it if you ever come across one! Leprechauns are little Irish fairies, and they are thought to work as shoe-makers for other fairies. The Irish say that if a leprechaun is caught by a human, he will reveal where he hides his pot of gold. On this day, pictures of shamrocks and leprechauns are hung everywhere. Some people even dress up as leprechauns complete with their big green hats! The village of Blarney is situated northwest of the Irish city of Cork. Blarney comes from the Irish word ‘An blarna’, meaning the plain. Blarney Castle is a very famous castle in this village and is 90 feet tall. The world famous Blarney Stone is on the top story. It is said that if one kisses this stone, one will be given the gift of eloquence, meaning to have beautiful speaking abilities. Nowadays, the word blarney means the ability to influence and coax with fair words and soft speech without offending. Legend also says that St. Patrick could raise people from the dead. He is well-known for driving the snakes out of Ireland, although many people dispute how true this is! Another great story was how he used the shamrock, with its three leaves, to explain the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost) to his followers. I am patrick swayze dvd. I am patrick the patron saint of ireland film. Around the year 400 AD, Saint Patrick was born in Wales. When he was still a boy, an Irish chieftain called Niall of the Nine Hostages, swept across the sea and captured his village. Saint Patrick was taken to Ireland, sold as a slave, and sent to herd sheep and swine. There in northeast Ireland, in his solitude and suffering, Saint Patrick discovered God. Years later, Saint Patrick dreamed a vision, and following that vision, he escaped and struggled home to his family. After years of religious study to become a priest and missionary, Saint Patrick dreamed of returning to Ireland; often hearing in his dreams the voice of the Irish, "crying to thee, come hither and walk with us once more". Eventually Pope Celestine fulfilled his wish and commissioned him as bishop to preach the gospel to the Celtic people. Saint Patrick came as the rising sun to the eastern shore of Ireland, and commenced an incredible mission across Ireland of preaching and baptizing, ordaining priests and bishops, erecting churches and establishing places of learning and worship, though such heroic feats in primitive times were not without difficulty and danger. Saint Patrick found that the pagan Irish had great difficulty comprehending the doctrine of the Trinity, until he gave them a natural example by holding up a shamrock to show the three leaves combined to make a single plant. The Irish understood at once, and the shamrock became the symbol of the land. One legend tells of Saint Patrick lighting the Easter bonfire on the hill of Slane -- on the night when it was forbidden to kindle any other fire in Ireland before the high king's own fire blazed from the royal ramparts of Tara. Seeing Saint Patrick's torch, the king sent a war band to kill the saint and douse the blaze, but the fire could not be quenched; and Saint Patrick with his companions passed through the warriors in the guise of a herd of deer and came safely to Tara, where he defeated the royal druids in a contest of miracle-working. Many in the king's court bowed down and were converted, and though the king himself was not one of them, he did honor Saint Patrick with the right to preach freely. Another account is told of Saint Patrick and his companions arriving at sunrise at the royal center of ancient paganism where they discovered the two daughters of the king, Eithne the Red and Fedelm the Fair. These two closely questioned Saint Patrick about God, to which he recited the Holy Creed. Desiring to see the Christ, they asked to be baptized. Upon receiving the sacrament, the girls died on the spot and were buried there. The most famous legend about Saint Patrick is that he miraculously drove snakes and all venomous beasts from the island by banging a drum, and did this so well that to touch Irish soil is instant death for any such creature. Even Irish wood has a virtue against poison, so that it is reported of King's College, Cambridge, that "being built of Irish wood, no spider doth ever come near it. " One final tale has Saint Patrick coming to a neolithic tomb thought to be a "giant's grave". To satisfy his companions' curiosity, Saint Patrick raised from the dead of the tomb the pagan giant, baptized him, and returned him to his grave. In time, Saint Patrick and his missionaries converted most of the island to Christianity. Praying and fasting atop what is now Croagh Patrick, the saint extracted from God Himself the promise that the Irish would hold fast to the faith until the end of time, and that on the day of doom, "I, Saint Patrick, shall be judge of the men of Erin. " Upon his death, several communities contended for the honor of this burial. Tradition has it that the body of Saint Patrick, wrapped in its shroud, was placed upon a cart drawn by two white oxen. The beasts were unreined and wandered to Downpatrick where, it is said, now lies the remains of the Saint, his gravestone a granite boulder marked with a cross and simply inscribed: PATRIC. Supposedly at his passing, the sun would not set, but shone in the sky for twelve days and nights; refusing to make a new day without him. Today, a stained-glass window in Saint Patrick's Cathedral Dublin reflects the saint's own summary confession: "I am greatly a debtor to God who hath vouchsafed me such great grace that many people by my means should be born again to God. " Saint Patrick died on March 17th circa 465 AD. This is why March 17 th is celebrated as Saint Patrick's Day. Its emphasis in Ireland is a holy religious time with appropriate praying, singing and dance. The first North American celebration was held in Boston in 1737 by the Irish Charitable Society, and later in Philadelphia and New York by the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. In the archives of the Ancient Order rests a book by one John D. Crimmins, 1902, entitled: "Saint Patrick's Day: Its celebration in New York and other American places, 1737-1845. How the anniversary was observed by representative Irish organizations and the toasts proposed". Another source states that on March 17, 1762, a group of Irish-born soldiers, en route to the local tavern of renown to honor their patron saint, staged the first parade in colonial New York, complete with marching bands and colorful banners. Bystanders and passers-by joined the promenade, singing Irish ballads and dancing down the cobblestones. The event being so joyful was repeated yearly. Throughout Ireland and indeed those other parts of the world that become Irish on 17th March is celebrated with street parades, music, dance and Guinness; Craic agus Ceol and because of (or perhaps despite) the whole green leprechaun frenzy of it all, St Patrick's Day has become one of the biggest self marketing tools for Ireland. So as you can see, St Patrick isn't just a patron saint, but a champion of the Irish people and figurehead for Ireland, that through his life and legend has come to symbolising to people a sense of hope during oppression, struggle against adversity and hopefully; of unity or at the very least a good excuse for a party! When planning your Ireland Vacation, consider visiting some of the places associated with Saint patrick, The Patron Saint of Ireland.

Patrick's father, Calpornius, held both civic and clerical offices when Patrick was born to him in the late fourth century (c. A. D. 390). Although the family lived in the village of Bannavem Taberniaei, in Roman Britain, Patrick would one day become the most successful Christian missionary in Ireland, its patron saint, and the subject of legends. The Story of St. Patrick Patrick's first encounter with the land to which he would devote his life was an unpleasant one. He was kidnapped at age 16, sent to Ireland (around County Mayo), and sold into slavery. While Patrick worked there as a shepherd, he developed a deep faith in God. One night, during his sleep, he was sent a vision of how to escape. So much he tells us in his autobiographical "Confession. " Unlike the work of the same name by the theologian, Augustine, Patrick's "Confession" is short, with few statements of religious doctrine. In it, Patrick describes his British youth and his conversion, for although he was born to Christian parents, he did not consider himself Christian before his captivity. Another purpose of the document was to defend himself to the very church that had sent him to Ireland to convert his former captors. Years before Patrick wrote his "Confession", he wrote an angry Letter to Coroticus, the British King of Alcluid (later called Strathclyde), in which he condemns him and his soldiers as compatriots of the demons because they had captured and slaughtered many of the Irish people Bishop Patrick had just baptized. Those they didn't kill would be sold to "heathen" Picts and Scots. Although personal, emotional, religious, and biographical, these two pieces and Gildas Bandonicus' "Concerning the Ruin of Britain" ("De Excidio Britanniae") provide the main historical sources for fifth-century Britain. Upon Patrick's escape from his approximately six years of slavery, he went back to Britain, and then to Gaul where he studied under St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre, for 12 years before returning again to Britain. There he felt a calling to return as a missionary to Ireland. He stayed in Ireland for another 30 years, converting, baptizing, and setting up monasteries. Various legends have grown up concerning St. Patrick, the most popular of the Irish saints. St. Patrick was not well-educated, a fact he attributes to early captivity. Due to this, it was with some reluctance that he was sent as a missionary to Ireland, and only after the first missionary, Palladius, had died. Perhaps it's because of his informal schooling in the meadows with his sheep that he came up with the clever analogy between the three leaves of the shamrock and the Holy Trinity. At any rate, this lesson is one explanation for why St. Patrick is associated with a shamrock. St. Patrick is also credited with driving the snakes out of Ireland. There were probably no snakes in Ireland for him to drive out, and it is very likely that the story was meant to be symbolic. Since he converted the heathen, the snakes are thought to stand for the pagan beliefs or evil. Where he was buried is a mystery. Among other places, a chapel to St. Patrick at Glastonbury claims he was interred there. A shrine in County Down, Ireland, claims to possess a jawbone of the saint which is requested for childbirth, epileptic fits, and to avert the evil eye. While we don't know exactly when he was born or died, this Roman British saint is honored by the Irish, especially in the United States, on March 17 with parades, green beer, cabbage, corned beef, and general revelry. While there is a parade in Dublin as the culmination of a week of festivities, Irish celebrations on St. Patrick's Day itself are predominantly religious. Sources.
