Nagato had known the sting of defeat many times in her restored life, sent out to battle again and again, she led her fellow Kansen to battles against Sirens many times. Though she secured many victories, she suffered losses, whether of being unable to save her fellow Kansen, or having to retreat in order to save them from destruction. Despite her intentions, her old commander never saw it that way. Anytime she would fail: lose a ship or be forced to retreat, she would be punished. Her commander would verbally berate her, call her inferior and on occasion would strike her if the battle ended horribly. Nagato had been willing to shoulder the punishments, keeping them from the others under her protection. She had been unwilling to speak about them, wanting to keep herself and the Commanders images safe, hoping it would stop as the tides of war shifted. She was wrong. Over time, the punishments her commander would give her steadily grew more violent as time went on; it soon came to the point where she could stand it no longer. She revealed everything to some of her fellow fleet members, speaking of what she had to deal with and what the commander’s orders had led to. Many other members of her fleet agreed with her, and they began to plan, knowing what would become of them if they went through with their plan. Late at night, when Nagato knew her supporters were on patrol, she executed her plan. Those who agreed to abandon their base loaded up with Oil, before setting fire to the supplies, it wouldn’t allow for them to follow them into the black of night. Her fellow ships escaping out of the waters at full speed, keeping up irregular movements to keep herself and her fellow deserters safe from the possible retaliation. Eventually it did come, it always would. Battles on the open ocean became dangerous for them, without a safe dock to stay at and repair, any damage they took would remain until it healed naturally, which could take anywhere from days to months, to even years. Nagato was happy when she finally managed to find an abandoned port, using it as a base of operations for her rebel fleet. They would only do small attacks on convoys, needing the supplies to keep their base running. She would often join in these attacks, helping command her fellows. With her, they managed to evade the Azur Lane’s retaliation for almost a year. They had grown in strength over that time, their name becoming known to many of the discontent Kansen. By the time the first fleet found their base, Nagato’s forces had grown considerably, enough to easily repel the attackers. Though that was the first sign of something worse coming. Kansen rebellions were nothing new, and Nagato’s rebellion had become a problem for the fleets near her position, having to siphon more and more of their resources. Soon it felt as though every day was a battle, every day she lost another comrade, everyday they waned in strength. Her patrols being less and less successful as morale and supplies dwindled. Nagato had to step onto the field, leading her forces more and more, with her, they kept fighting, willing to sacrifice themselves for the only place they felt safe throughout this war. That all came crashing down in an instant. While leading her fleet, helping them choose targets and where to place shots, a blow came from where she didn’t expect it, behind her. Kawakaze had been with her since the beginning, and as such, she didn’t think anything of it when her guard offered to stay and protect her. Through the weariness of constant battle and the worry for her own fleet, she hadn’t thought much of it, how Kawakaze had previously offered to keep herself at the front of formations to keep them from reaching Nagato, how recently Kawakaze seemed unfazed by the war around her, or the fact Kawakaze was uninjured from the barrage of shells she took the previous day. It was only when Nagato was attempting to direct her fellow battleships to fire upon the Carriers that she felt it. A stabbing pain through her back, causing her to let out a cry of pain as she looked down, seeing Kawakaze’s thin blade jutting from her middle, narrowly missing her vitals. Nagato stared at the blade, all sound of combat fading from around her as she stared in shock at the blade. The only thing that split the veil was Kawakaze’s voice letting out a pained “Apologies, Mairedi-sama. ” Before the blade was pulled back through her. A second later she felt the sharpened blade slice through the connective segment of her two top turrets, the pain that exploded from them causing her to fall to her knees, her eyes clenched closed. When sight came to her again, she saw Kawakaze’s blade out of the corner of her eye, glinting with red and black. “Yield, and your fleet shall be spared. ” Kawakaze stated coldly, tightening her grip on her sword as the Nagato under her turned to look at her, then out at the battlefield. Nagato watched as a nearby cruiser was set on fire, a barrage of high-caliber rounds splashing into the ocean around them, planes falling from the sky. Though it pained her greatly, both in her pride and physically, Nagato managed to turn to a fellow battleship as she dodged past a line of torpedoes, another wave coming after her shortly after. Nagato’s eyes started to drip as she coughed out the order. “All Kansen…” Nagato chocked slightly. “Stand down… Return to dock. ” There were arguments of course, but Nagato barked the order out again, Kawakaze’s hardened gaze softening lightly at the pain it caused the Battleship. Though she had her own orders. She looked up to see many of the rebel ships becoming simple light as the Kansen of each returned towards the island. Kawakaze ensured her blade was never far from Nagato’s head to dissuade any who may attempt heroics. Once Nagato had confirmed all of her ships were in dock, Kawakaze had relayed the information back to the fleet, when she had, a few ships split off from the group, heading towards shore. Nagato hung her head in defeat as the Union Battleship spoke to her. She couldn’t absorb any of what she said, her heart and mind going out to her fleet, whom would all likely suffer a much worse fate than what was in store for her. Her fox ears drooping in sadness even as the enemies Vestal came and helped patch up her abdominal damages. Though she knew plenty of defeats, this stung the worst. The shame of defeat, the fact she had failed all those who put their faith in her to protect them. She had been routed and surrendered, leaving their fates in the hands of those who they ran from originally. Her own fears of retaliation against her for her actions dwarfed by those she had for her allies. Nagato was soon led aboard the main battleship of the enemy’s formation, she was brought to the brig, locked within the cell without any view of the outside available to her. All she could do was sit and think about the fate she and her allies would soon come under. The only company she had was the guards that would be stationed outside her cell, keeping an eye on her with their rigging activated. A constant she noticed was that Kawakaze would be there, though she tried to hide it, Nagato understood that Kawakaze was worried for her, and even if she was an enemy, Nagato attempted to speak with her. “Kawakaze…” Nagato said quietly, causing the destroyer to glance her way, though not speak to her. “Kawakaze, I am most likely going to be killed once I am brought to my Shikikan…” Nagato admitted, causing the Destroyer’s eyes to lock onto the Battleship, a small twinge of worry in her eye. “I am not asking you to let me free, I just want to speak with you. ” Nagato let out a sigh. “Perhaps for the last time…” She said under her breath. “Nagato-sa…” Kawakaze began, stopping herself before addressing her prisoner the same as she would her lady. Kawakaze closed her eyes and took a deep breath, looking away from Nagato. “I will give you no promises, Shujin. ” Kawakaze stated. “Though I will listen. “I suppose it is as much of a kindness as I can expect. ” Nagato gathered her thoughts for a moment, trying to think of what she could say to help break down Kawakaze’s iron guard. “You once told me that there was no honor in war, no justice in it, that at the end of the day war would come, no matter how you try to prevent it. ” Nagato looked to her bandaged side. “I believe I understand that now. ” Kawakaze glanced at Nagato before turning her gaze forward again. “I have prayed to the Gods for protection, for mercy, for a sanctuary where all who have experienced what I have may be safe… I thought I had found such a place, it was isolated, it was quiet, there had been no activity for decades. ” Nagato sighed. “Unfortunately… The war found me once more. ” Nagato paused. “That sanctuary I wished to build lies in ruins, destroyed by those whom I sought to build it for. ” Kawakaze cast another glance over to Nagato, her eyes darting down to the reddened bandages. “The gods promised me a place, one where I could help others who have suffered as I have; a Shikikan that treats us as dogs, brandishing the whip at the slightest failure. Can you not see why I would wish to prevent such an event from occurring again? ” Kawakaze let out a sigh. “You always did have a bleeding heart…” She said under her breath. “War was an inevitability, especially for us. Attempting to run from war is akin to the stream running from the ocean. Especially for us. ” “Then you would have had me stay there? A place that treated me as little more than a wild animal, and likely would have punished the others as he did me had I not taken the blows for them. ” “Had you not considered who would next be on this Shikikan’s list? ” Kawakaze stated, causing Nagato to pause. “Shikikan’s such as him are not simply going to stop because some of his fleet leave. He will turn his aggression to another, and then another. To them, we are little more than weapons, I am unsure if those Shikikan’s even have any empathy. ” Nagato’s ears fell slightly, thoughts of her fellow Kansen, still under her Shikikan’s orders being mistreated as she had been filling her mind. “So… I escaped, only to drag another into my shackles…” Kawakaze nodded solemnly. “It would appear that way. ” Nagato kept herself from crying only through her years of experience with suppressing her emotions, being the bulwark of the Sakura. She started a whispered prayer to the eight million gods, hoping that whichever Kansen is in her Shikikan’s grasp is safe. When she ended, Kawakaze had taken to leaning against the side of her cell. “Why do you cover your ear? ” Kawakaze asked. Nagato reflexively reached for her right ear, covered in a handkerchief adorned with the emblem of the Sakura, her golden hairpin keeping the cloth securely wrapped around her ear. The image of her with a covered ear had become something of a symbol for much of her fleet, with many of those from Sakura copying it in their own ways. Though they never truly understood why she did it. “Why would you ask something like that, Kawakaze? ” Nagato asked, managing to pull her hand away from the golden hairpin. Kawakaze shrugged slightly. “It has always been a topic of interest among the Azur Lane forces. I may not know you, Shujin, but Nagato-sama has always been one for tradition. ” Kawakaze pointed at Nagato’s hairpin. “And while I, myself, care little for those traditions, I am well aware of how Nagato-sama dresses. ” Nagato let out a small sigh. “You wouldn’t understand. ” “As far as I can tell, I am the only one here who would understand. ” Kawakaze stated coldly. “Much as I realize that we are not as close as we would be, were either of us our counterparts, you are still High Priestess of the Sakura, and I am still your guard, though I cannot claim to know you, Nagato-shi, I think I know Nagato-Sama well enough. ” Kawakaze was now turned towards Nagato, her hand still on her katana’s hilt, but more of reflex than need. Nagato cast her eyes to the steel floor, internally debating whether Kawakaze could understand, or if she would simply be speaking to the iron mask she often wore. Nagato let out a sigh. “Tell me one thing first, Kawakaze, and I shall enlighten you. ” “Very well, ” Kawakaze said with a small nod. “What do you wish to know. ” “Kawakaze – My Kawakaze…” Nagato stated for clarification. “Is she… safe? ” Kawakaze let a small sigh, thinking a much more difficult question would be coming. “Hai, Shi. Your Kawakaze and Mutsu-shi are safe, Kawakaze was badly damaged when she was captured, though she did not yield without a fight. Only Mutsu-shi stopped her from falling upon our blades. She is being looked at by Vestal. Do not worry for your fleet, so long as none of them attempt a fight, they will be safe. ” Nagato sighed in relief, a small stone taken from the mountain that rested upon her mind. “I have given you your answer, Shi. You owe me an explanation. ” Nagato reached her hand to her golden hairpin, clutching it slightly, contemplating removing the ornamental circle. Nagato looked up at Kawakaze. “Not all of my scars are invisible. As I said, my Shikikan treated us as dogs, and once the whip stopped being effective, he moved onto…other methods. ” Kawakaze’s eyes widened slightly, her grip on her katana tightening. “Show me. ” She demanded, her voice full of both worry and spite. Nagato sighed, reaching up to her golden hairpin and removing it, beginning to unwrap the cloth from it as Kawakaze’s steely gaze was locked onto it. As Nagato slowly revealed the normally covered ear, Kawkaze’s grip on her sword tightened ever more. All along Nagato’s right ear, were various cuts, a few of the cuts causing triangular shaped chips in her ear. Right in the center of the small cuts, was a large circular segment of her ear that had been cut off, right where the hairpin had been resting. The edges of each cut becoming red as they were exposed to the open air once again. Nagato flinched slightly when revealing the largest of her cuts, the still sensitive organ stinging where the blade had fallen across it. Kawakaze let out a curse at seeing the incisions made in the High Priestess’ ear, anger covering her face as she began to pace back and forth, muttering to herself. After a minute of intermittent cursing and vows of vengeance against the commander responsible, she turned back to Nagato, who had already covered her ear again, with a practiced precision. “You can understand why I hid it now? ” Nagato asked. Kawakaze let her anger simmer before responding. “You wished not to provoke a retaliatory strike, I assume. Nagato nodded. “I did not wish to rally behind aggression or retaliation for the actions of our Shikikans, I wanted a place as safe from war as could be possible until the Sirens were repelled. Perhaps then, I would be able to see a time that Kansen are no longer needed. That we may throw off the weapons that bind us and live a life where we are free to do as we please. ” “Assuming we make it through this war. “I am not so foolish as to believe a true escape from war is possible, but never the less, I would stand by you until the end if necessary. ” Kawakaze’s ears twitch slightly. “I beg your forgiveness, Nagato-shi, but I must leave you. ” Kawakaze bowed slightly, proceeding to leave the room, only for another Kansen to take her place. Nagato was left in silence once again, her mind drifting closer towards the worries and fears she felt before speaking with Kawakaze. Her injured ear stinging slightly from its exposure to the air, she began to give a prayer to the gods. Sending her worries to them and her fears for her fellow Kansen. She prayed for protection for them if possible, she hoped that of the eight million gods, at least one would hear her pleas and grant some small mercy to her fleet. The Days and nights passed in a seeming blur to Nagato, her waking moments devoted to prayer, not for herself, but for her fellow rebels. She had long since accepted her fate, but those under her command had not accepted that outcome, they had much ahead of them, Nagato knew she would be the one to take the harshest punishments for her actions, she was willing to take the fury of the gods for her actions if it spared her fellows. Nagato was unsure how long they had been travelling the seas, but eventually they came to a halt, the steady bob and weave of the ship ceasing as the ship docked. Nagato took a deep breath as she heard the door to the brig open up, a few Kansen stepping in, with Kawakaze among them. Nagato said a small prayer, giving thanks to the Gods above for all they had done, and if this were to be her final day, she prayed for them to watch over her sister and nation as they have for these many years. When she finished, Kawakaze stepped into her cell. “Do not make any attempts at escape or retaliation. “You will be subdued and any possible deals will no longer be applicable. Do you understand? ” Nagato looked up at her bodyguard, nodding to the white haired destroyer. Kawakaze stepped closer to the Battleship. “I understand if you wish not to, Nagato-shi, ” Kawakaze whispered, “But it may be beneficial to remove your wrapping. ” Kawakaze pointed at Nagato’s right ear. “It may help Shikikan understand your position. ” Nagato’s ears drooped slightly, but she ultimately nodded, removing her golden hairpin and placing it back where it belonged in her hair, she tied the cloth around her arm, hidden by her sleeve. When she revealed her ear, one of the guards gasped, while the other stood in silence, her eyes widening slightly but keeping much of the surprise off her face. When Nagato stood, Kawakaze whispered to her. “Shikikan will listen to what you have to say…” She promised, Nagato let out a sigh as she was led out of the brig, with every stair way ascended, a knot formed in Nagato’s stomach, all of them seeming to clench as one when she was led into the sunlight, the radiant orb causing her to blink a few times as it hit her face. She paused briefly to adjust her vision to the outside once more, the cold salty breeze stinging her long deprived ear, forcing it to flick a few times as it adjusted to the open air. As her eyes finally adjusted, she was greeted to the sight of the blue sea, reflecting back towards her golden eyes. In the water she spotted ships of various nations floating around the port they had docked at. The island was made up of several large structures, each fashioned very differently from the others. Nagato could make out the distinct furnishings of the Sakura on one building, while the extravagant designs of the Royal Navy lay on the other. Nagato stood and looked out at the island, much larger than the one she had come from originally. Nagato looked around the perimeter, seeing a small beach some ways from the dock. Before she had much time to absorb any other facts about the island she was looking at, she was ushered to move towards the gangway. Her head drooped slightly as she stepped down the gangway, being led by one who was to be her bodyguard and two unknown enemies. As she descended, she began to notice a figure standing near the end of the gangway. Nagato recognized the outfit he was wearing, one of an Azur Lane Commander. Her pupils shrunk to pinpricks as she felt the hair on her ears stand on end. Her hands trembling slightly as she was led off the gangway and led towards the Commander, her mind beginning to play back the various punishments she had suffered before coming back to her with every step she took. She remembered every hit she took, every insult and curse hurled at her, her heart starting to beat faster and faster. As she got closer, her ear twitched lightly, the sting of the salty breeze feeling like the knife that cut her. Her heart pounding in her ears blocking out the sounds around her, her eyes fixed on the Commander in front of her in a panicked instinct. If she took her eyes off of the Commander, she might be attacked. If she even blinked she worried what could happen. Every second caused her heart to slowly pick up in speed, watching as the Commander listened to the other girls, occasionally nodding or saying something she didn’t pick up on. Eventually the Commander looked at her and spoke, his words cutting through the silence. “So you’re the Nagato we’ve heard so much about. ” The Commander said, looking down at Nagato. “You’ve been a pain in some of the other Commander’s sides for a while. ” He suddenly began moving his right hand, Nagato let out a held breath as she reflexively flinched away from it, turning her head away from the hand and snapping her eyes closed. She waited for the blow to come, a sudden blunt pain or pressure against her ears moments before another cut was made in them. Her entire body clenched, stiffening in preparation for it. When it didn’t come, she slowly opened her left eye, seeing the Commander not moving, she could see Kawakaze’s furious expression as she turned away. She waited a little longer before opening her right eye, turning her head slightly towards the Commander. He was standing there, an expression of shock and concern on his face, his hand slightly extended towards her, cupped in uncertainty as to whether he should attempt to comfort her or pull away. His eyes widened at Nagato’s flinch, when she turned back to him, confused, he let out a small sigh. He pulled his hand back and knelt down. “What did he do to you? ” He asked, concern thick in his voice. Nagato looked at the Commander in confusion, taking a step back from him. The unexpected motion shocking her, she looked around her, keeping the commander in her peripheral vision as best she could, the faces of the other guards were ones of equal shock and concern to that of the Commander. Her mind being unable to comprehend what was happening, of all the situations that had played in her mind these past few days, she had never once believed that it would play out like this. “I…I…” Nagato stuttered, unable to gather her thoughts at the turn of events. Her eyes looked over to the Commander, whose eyes darted from her ear to other parts of her body, that same worried expression on his face as he looked over her, trying to locate any other damages. “Your ear…” he started, moving his hand slightly closer before stopping and pulling it away. “Was it done by a kansen? ” Nagato stared at the Commander, the question playing in her mind before she slowly shook her head. Her knees shaking slightly as her mind began to come to terms with her situation. The Commander let out a sigh, removing his hat and placing it behind him, allowing Nagato to see his short brown hair. “Nagato… I don’t know what was done to you, but I promise, that I won’t hurt you. I just want to know what happened. ” Nagato could see Kawakaze eyeing the Commander, her protective instincts above her respect for the chain of Command. Nagato could feel tears begin to well in her eyes, tears she thought had dried out over her many days and nights at sea, worrying over her fleet, who had suffered as she had, who knew the pain their commanders could inflict upon them. Her mind going back to the tales she had heard from some of the other girls, how much they had to withstand before gaining the courage to flee. Her mind’s momentary stall allowing the suppressed emotions to push to the surface. “A… you…. Are you going… to hurt them? ” Nagato said quietly, her eyes rising to look into the Commander’s. The Commander shook his head. “I’m not going to hurt any of them if it can be avoided. ” Nagato began to shake slightly. “P-Promise me…” She said her voice beginning to break. “Promise me… You won’t send me…” She took a chocking breath, “You won’t send me back…” The Commander in front of her nodded. “I promi…” Nagato collapsed to the dock, her eyes letting out the suppressed tears she held for nearly a year. Every tale of woe she heard from her sisters in arms, every night she wouldn’t be able to sleep, fearing the wrath of a commander who sought retaliation against the rebellious kansen. The days she spent worrying for their safety, all of them hit her at once, unable to speak her mind as she began to let out the suppressed feelings without pause. The Commander attempted to move closer, getting stopped by Kawakaze’s blade; the Kansen held the blade in front of her Commander and shook her head. The Commander sighed and moved back, allowing the Battleship to let out her emotions. After several minutes of the battleship crying, Kawakaze pulled her sword back, motioning with her head towards Nagato. The Commander walked over to her, kneeling down and putting a hand on her shoulder. The crying Battleship paused, looking up at the commander, her eyes reddened, face still wet with tears. The Commander looked her in the eyes, keeping the pressure on her shoulder light, letting her know she could pull away whenever she wished. “I don’t know what he did, Nagato, ” The Commander stated, “but I will make damn sure that he can’t do it to another Kansen. ” Nagato sniffled lightly as she looked away from the Commander. “I will make sure that you and every other girl you looked after will have a good home, a place that will treat you with the respect you deserve. I can’t undo all the damages they’ve caused, but I will help however I can. ” Nagato shuddered as another wave of tears rolled over her, she felt the Commander’s grasp slowly leave her, but she pushed towards him, grabbing the front of his shirt, not wanting the touch to end, lest he fade away and be lost to her, as if it had all been a delusion in her mind. She wanted this place to exist, to know that she wasn’t going insane, this place where for once, she felt safe. Where at last, she didn’t have to worry about being hunted in the dead of night, where she no longer had to wonder if it would be her last day when she woke up. She didn’t want to lose her Sanctuary, not after how long it took to finally find it. Perhaps the gods had heard her prayers, her pleas at night, her worries in the morning, they had heard and granted her the sanctuary she sought. “Don’t leave me… Shikikan…” Nagato said under her breath. She felt an embrace around her, not knowing the cause of it; she kept her eyes closed as her tears continued. “I’ll be here as long as you need. ” Nagato didn’t believe him at first. She thought the instant the man left her, she would find herself again in the cell, bringing her once more to an unknown fate. She kept him close, not wanting to return to the dark she had known. As the minutes stretched on, she found the worry in her heart lifting as one by one, the Kansen around her left, leaving only Kawakaze and the Commander. The one who stayed with her, until her tears ran dry, soaking the dock below them. She simply held onto the feeling of safety, the catharsis of freedom from her burden. It wasn’t until her shuddering breaths ceased, ad her short sniffles ended, that the Commander spoke again. “How do you feel, Nagato? ” Nagato paused, thinking her answer through, but at the end of her thoughts, she couldn’t deny what she felt. “I… I feel… I feel safe… Shikikan. ” Nagato replied. “Shikikan…” Nagato paused. “Thank you… Thank you for saving me…” ********************************* This is kind of old, I wrote it around 2-3 months ago but was waiting to see if I could find a way to continue it. I did not, so I decided to post this here, because otherwise it would just be sitting around and never be finished, and I figured some people might want to read it.

Der unsichtbare dritte ganzer f. (This follows on from a comment I posted elsewhere. I struggle a lot with guarding my time from men messaging me on social media and I thought I'd go into more detail and try and open a discussion) Presumably you're not trying to date during the current situation. I mean who is right now? Not HVM either. So this is a discussion about batting away LVM and defending your energy and time rather than making any inroads into finding a partner. With soical distancing, quarantine, and whatever other measures you're experiencing right now, suddenly a lot of people are relying on social media to maintain their relationships. Take a second to think about what that looks like for you. It's going to vary a lot, from person to person. Maybe you're coming home from rough shifts at work with no energy and a lot of anxiety, and all you can do is scroll down your feeds. Maybe you're not at work at the moment and so you're checking your phone more often. Maybe you're unsure how to fill your leisure time now and you're quite rightly not going to be hard on yourself for 'wasting time' watching videos from the dodo on facebook. Hopefully over the last few weeks, if you've been playing along at home, you already have that instinctive repulsive reaction if one of your ex's reaches out right now. But I want to build on the discussion and very good advice other members of FDS have posted about this. I want to talk about other men in your social circle who are currently using social media to hassle you. You know these guys. Your mate from Bumfucksville Idaho who moved back there after college. Someone who is kind of your work colleague but not really. And old school friend who talks a lot about his trauma and thinks because he goes out drinking somewhere rough that women don't have it worse than him walking home. That one guy who started talking to you just as you broke things off with your ex and you never quite managed to ghost and now you feel like you're in too deep. None of them ever made a move on you in meatspace, none of them are making an actual move now. What are they doing in your inbox? Probably Using you as an audience for their stream of consciousness Checking up on you (why, sis? If they think you don't have other people closer by checking up on you that's a massive problem you need to work on. If they do think you're surrounded by people then they're masking their intentions) Looking for free therapy They are bored, and they want free entertainment, including: gossip (eg if someone close to you gets corona they get to say "oh my mate's dad has come down with it"), treating you like they would a bored bar tender because they don't want to or can't go the pub at the moment. Intimacy faking, they get off on the idea that they have loads of friends, they're networking or using this as an opportunity to social climb, they want you interacting with their tweets Obviously, you can and should block and delete wherever possible. You will feel so great when you do, and it makes it easier to do it again to the next one. Sometimes you can't, and sometimes we tell ourselves we can't when we could, so here's some other tips while you work your way up to it: Turn settings that broadcast your activity status and read receipts off. You shouldn't be hung up on whether someone else has seen your message or not and the reward for this that you don't have to let other people know whether you've read their message. Following on from this: remember people can't see if you've replied to your family's group chat but not replied to their message. You can scroll past his unread message as much as you want and the experience is going to be the same for him. Does anyone ever try and contact you urgently through the particular message system the man is messaging you on? Make sure they have alternative contact details and then turn off push notifications. You are allowed to publish content online even if your inbox isn't empty. You are allowed to like other people's posts even if your inbox isn't empty. You are allowed to publicly comment on things if your inbox isn't empty. Not that you need an excuse, but they are completely different headspaces, messaging opens on a different page or in a different app, you're swamped by messages and it's stressing you out, whatever. If you're stuck on the idea that these men aren't worth your emotional labour and time, continue looking out for boundary pushing or other things that are red flags. Does he keep messaging you when you ignore him? Ew. Did he say "did you see what I posted" and it wasn't anything he needed to message you about? Feel your feelings, don't do his work for him and kid yourself into thinking you're enjoying this, and if you're not willing to block him yet you might do later on, if not for something he sends you but because of some shit head facebook status about mental health or single moms or whatever. Remember you get to decide who your inner circle is. You should not be replying to these types anywhere near the level you'd be messaging your female friends. If they can't handle that? That's for them and their therapist to deal with. The pandemic is super stressful and life has changed for a lot of us. Be wary of how your values may have shifted during this time, especially in terms of empathising with others. The fear and uncertainty will be making you vulnerable. Change your outlook from one that continues to serve other people to knowing it is important now more than ever to guard your energy and time. If you want to help other people, be strategic about it - help people you love, do organised volunteer work, do work that is visible or will help your career. Do not act like a text in therapy service for men who don't care about you. When you are messaging someone, you give them power over keeping you invisible or helping others violate your privacy and you get fuck all in return. Consider completely stepping away from social media if you have to. Consider opening a second private account for just you and a small circle of friends. The emotional vampirism of these men is one of the big barriers stopping you from getting away from them. If your mate was trapped in an absuive relationship you try and get them to spend time away from the environment they are being abused in right? Apply that logic to yourself. Have a long hard think about why you 'can't' ghost. Is there a power imbalance? You're worried about a shouty confrontration, he's lived in this town for longer than you, he hangs out with people you want to get to know better, he's breadcrumbing you with intel or pretending to send clients for your business in your direction? Let yourself get angry about it. Think about how big the imbalance is and whether you've overcome worse before. Make a move to address the imbalance. Ultimately, peacetime rules apply, and you should keep your life as full and fulfilling as possible so you're not remotely interested in checking your messages anyway. I feel like a lot of this is a 'me' problem but there might be women setting out on their FDS journey that find this useful. Fwllow FDSers, what tips do you want to give us? Did you struggle with this too?
