Its a great shame. Artemis Fowl was one of my favourite series to read when I was younger, I got all of the books up to the 7th one, and I've been waiting for them to do a movie on it for years, its been in development hell as far back as the writers' strike, casting problems, and just IMO an unwillingness for anyone to do it for various reasons. Now, I was fully prepared for them to do a mix of the first two books, that's been rumoured for a long time, and to me it makes some sense. The Arctic Incident is frankly a pretty short story even though a fair amount of stuff happens in it, and you can condense a lot of the first book potentially, but it could be tight. It also makes the most sense if they want to give Arty a bit of a redemeption arc within the film, since we don't really find out why he's doing what he's doing until the very end of Book 1, and the start of Book 2. The trick is how they write the characters though, I can live with adjusted plot-lines if the characters are still written like themselves. Arty was always gonna be the major kicker. Artemis is meant to be beguiling for his age, you don't think that this kid is a criminal mastermind who basically has run a criminal empire for his missing father not just adequately but swimmingly, but yet is still capable of believing in Fairies and believes the myths around them. Hence why he spends so much effort to find them and understand them, so that he could essentially pull off the biggest trick a human has ever done upon Fairies. He goes to a great deal of effort to always try and ensure that he has the upper hand in every situation, and Holly and the rest of the Faeries are completely out of their depth thinking that this is just gonna be some stupid kid they can deal with fairly easily, yet they're surprised at every turn by how much this kid knows and how he acts. That's who he is for the first book, and while he does soften a bit for the second book because he realizes he NEEDS the help of Holly, Julius and the others, and becomes better as the series goes on, he's still the deviously smart kid who's a professional criminal at heart, and the only human in modern memory who's managed to trick faeries out of their gold. He's the protagonist, but he's written like an antagonist or anti-hero, especially for the first book. But my Gods! No, no, no, no. They're undermining so much of the plot of this series by how they're changing Artemis and the Fowl family. Because apparently they don't or cannot write a good anti-hero! The whole draw of Artemis Fowl is that Arty is not your typical main character, but they're ruining that! His casting is okay, but the writing doesn't fit. Holly Short is another who I feel they're undermining her story a little bit, which is weird because you'd think her story would be a Progressive's wet dream. First female member of LEP. Recon, had to struggle to get in, and is under a lot of pressure from her commander to succeed (Which she complains as discriminatory, but we find out later that Julius is only hard on her not because he hates her but because he knows how scrutinized she will be when he's eventually gone. He wants her to be greater than everyone else so that nobody has any reason to take fault with her. But for Julius' style he does that by being a hard-ass boss.) Why do I say undermining that? Because they cast Julius Root as Judi Dench (Commander Root, simply) now I have absolutely no problem with Judi Dench, she's done M so she can do Julius Root's character type, the performance is not an issue. The issue is that by making it so that Holly is not the first female member of you inherently undermine her original character story. It can still work, but to me it would have been stronger if they hadn't changed it. That aside, she looks just like how I thought she would be. Butler, while his character is relatively simple on paper, I scratch my head as to who the fuck thought it was a good idea optically to make him the diversity cast in a current Hollywood era that is just BEGGING for shit to complain about on this? Mulch actually looks decently cast, but he's also not terribly hard to do. But overall, this movie is still about 10 years too late, honestly. Which was always gonna be a problem.
