The storyline was interesting, too, and had the potential to be a twisty, interesting ride. I have to admit I'm mystified by all the rave reviews. There is no suspense in this story. It is revealed early on that the father character, Don, is possibly the infamous Clovehitch serial killer who terrorized the small town until about 10 years ago. All of the elements pointing to his creepiness are so blatant, and the family dynamic so saccharine, I thought there must be some sort of twist coming. It couldn't possibly be as obvious as it seemed. Unfortunately, this movie is twist-free. Don is a pervy creep from the moment he appears on camera, and he stays that way throughout. SPOILER: he is the Clovehitch Killer. But that's hardly a spoiler, because it is shouted from the first frame to the last. The only mildly suspenseful element is how he will react when he knows his son has discovered the truth. But even THAT plot line is ridiculously short and anticlimactic. Don confronts Dylan for his snooping, blithely blames his own paralyzed and uncommunicative brother for the murders, and claims he is only hiding the mountains of pictures of dead women to protect the family. Dylan believes it until his girlfriend talks him out of believing it, and they go on together trying to catch Don in the act. It is never explained why Don stopped serial killing 10 years ago (even though the girlfriend actually says serial killers never stop), and then conveniently starts stalking again just in time to be following by Dylan and the girlfriend. I was completely unsurprised when Dylan showed up to save the latest victim, but I was surprised at the ham-handed and completely unbelievable resolution to the problem: Dylan and his girlfriend killing Don and staging his body in the woods to look like suicide. What? Where did that come from? The more I think about it, the more I think 3 stars was way too generous. This movie is crap. Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2018 Verified Purchase SPOILER ALERT!! Enjoyed this tremendously until the point at which there was a huge hole in the plot. After the son confronts his father committing a crime mid-stream (as in the victim is still living and tied up) and the scuffle ensues with him and his friend overpowering his father, they decide to take his still alive dad, set him up in the woods where they kill him and make it look like an accident. So how is the victim that survived going to allow them to just walk out of the scene without calling the cops and blowing this whole thing wide open. Ending made absolutely no sense. I appreciate the concept, but the execution was an insult to my intelligence. Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2018 Verified Purchase Hadn’t heard about this film. Came across it on Amazon one night and it sounded interesting. Was pleasantly surprised. The acting is good and the film kept me interested the entire time. Dylan McDermott does a great job in this movie. It’s the best suspense slow burn I’ve seen in awhile. It was very creepy. Reminds one that serial killers are very good at portraying themselves like ordinary people. Wolves in sheep’s clothing. Pretty scary when you think about it. Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2018 Verified Purchase What happens when an average suburban teen slowly realizes his average white-guy dad may be a serial killer? Dylan McDermott is the every-day guy, troop-leader, church-goer in dad-jeans, giant white sneakers, goatee, and glasses. When the facade drops away, it's horrifying. Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2019 Verified Purchase The ending could be better but the set up of the characterization is classically satisfying. You know this father-son relationship, you might even have been this father-son yet no its unlikely it ever came to this. The squeaky clean, involved, caring, responsible family man who clearly turns out to be NOT. How do we know the people that we think we know inside and out? How often are we really just counting on the mask to be true? I think the psychopath, sociopath, pedophilic predator type, whoever it is and whatever it is they do, have an advantage in predatory terms on us average folks in that they realize that usually we care so much for the dream of the mask to be real, that real connection, that bond that glues in all our needs for reassurance, that we are willing to over-invest our suspension of disbelief to maintain the illusion. That is perhaps the most traumatizing secret. But I've seriously digressed. If you enjoy warped and twisted and don't mind a few holes, go for it! Great character study. Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2018 Verified Purchase I found this to be a hidden gem. Definitely worth the watch. Great acting from the lead and supporting roles. Nice pacing and pretty good camera work. No spoilers here. I liked not knowing what was coming next. Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2018 Verified Purchase Strong storyline and characters. Excellent acting. Definitely recommend. Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2018 Verified Purchase I actually loved this film all the way up until the end when the son's actions were a bit too dumb to believe they were real. I'd still definitely suggest this movie though Top international reviews 5. 0 out of 5 stars Kann nichts weiter zum Film sagen der Anfang auch wenn ohne Ton ist gut. Critics Consensus The Clovehitch Killer patiently dials up the tension with a story that makes up for a lack of surprises with strong performances and a chilling wit. 78% TOMATOMETER Total Count: 32 68% Audience Score User Ratings: 766 The Clovehitch Killer Ratings & Reviews Explanation The Clovehitch Killer Videos Photos Movie Info A shocking revelation turns a teenage boy's world upside down in this chilling look at the evil that can lurk below even the most wholesome surface. Tyler Burnside (Charlie Plummer) is a Boy Scout, a volunteer at his local church, and the dutiful son of an upstanding, community leader dad (Dylan McDermott). Only one thing troubles the quiet Kentucky town he lives in: the unsolved murders--in which ten women were brutally tortured and killed by a psychopath known as Clovehitch--that rocked the community more than a decade ago. When Tyler discovers a cache of disturbing images in his father's possession, he begins to suspect that the man he trusts most in the world may be Clovehitch--and that his deadly rampage may not be over. With unrelenting tension, director Duncan Skiles crafts a picture-perfect vision of the all-American family--and then piece by piece rips it to shreds. Summary: A teenage Boy Scout raised in a small Christian community comes to suspect his father could be a notorious serial killer. Review: I wasn’t particularly excited going into “The Clovehitch Killer. ” The Los Angeles Film Festival screening guide summarized it by saying, “a teenage boy starts to suspect that his wholesome, all-American dad is actually the serial killer terrorizing their small town. ” Déjà vu was a deterrent, as I’d seen several coming-of-age stories tucked inside this setup before, most recently in “Summer of 84” ( review here). Not only that, thrillers based on an “is he or isn’t he? ” premise generally have a hard time sustaining suspense because “he” always turns out to be the person that the Boy Who Cried Wolf suspected he was in the first place. To the relieved reversal of my erroneous presumptions, “The Clovehitch Killer” doesn’t present itself as a predictable “true identity” mystery. The truth about Don Burnside, a family man and scoutmaster active in his Christian community, is only temporarily teased as a question with two possible answers. Consequently, 16-year-old Tyler’s arc of discovery isn’t really about finding out whether his father is or isn’t the elusive killer called ‘Clovehitch. ’ The film’s emotional center instead themes itself around forcing your head to accept an uncomfortable fact your heart unfortunately already knows. Screenwriter Christopher Ford never attempts to hide that “The Clovehitch Killer” is based on the real-life case of Dennis ‘BTK’ Rader, right down to giving Don a goatee and glasses. Dylan McDermott sells the seemingly average man’s sweet side with a touch too much cinematic schmaltz. Maybe McDermott means for his smile to appear overeager when he presents a soda to his son as “our little secret. ” A scene of mom, dad, and little sister singing and dancing while doing dishes has less of an excuse for applying sentimentality so thickly. But when Don turns dark, McDermott takes his persona to chilling places that the actor has seldom explored before. Tension still refrains from tying too tightly. By design, “The Clovehitch Killer” doesn’t hit quite the same wavelength as say David Fincher’s “Zodiac” as far as skin-crawlingly realistic creepiness is concerned. Yet the film is consistently eerie in the psychological implications of its most naked moments, such as whenever an anchored camera starkly captures true terror hidden inside outwardly unassuming suburban homes. Although the movie models itself on true events, it isn’t overly concerned with the crimes, and is only peripherally interested in the killer. Just as Stephen King’s “A Good Marriage” takes a look at BTK from the vantage point of a wife that popular opinion believes should have sensed something, “The Clovehitch Killer” dissects a similar situation from the perspective of a suspected murderer’s child. “The Clovehitch Killer” is Tyler’s personal tale of growing through a cracked shell of innocence. Serial killer stories rarely peer through such a lens, making this movie a fascinating look inside the aftershocks of horrible actions on an indirect victim. Scenes unsettle due to how close they come to reflecting awful realities. “The Clovehitch Killer” becomes less focused on fictionalized shocks like a traditional thriller, and more interested in instilling dreadful atmospheric sadness along the lines of “My Friend Dahmer” ( review here). Alleviating concerns of having too straight of a story, “The Clovehitch Killer” includes a memorable moment that isn’t a twist so much as an unexpected revelation cleverly concealed by a timeline trick. The technique works wonderfully to steal a viewer’s breath without warning. The film then dares to return to this well a second time. By then, the narrative takes a mild hit of momentary confusion it doesn’t necessarily benefit from just to construct its juxtaposed conclusion. Other missteps and misdirects, such as a shoehorned kiss between Tyler and his companion, or Don tipping the audience to his bloodhound sense by trailing the teens too early, trip up “The Clovehitch Killer’s” rhythm whenever it tries following too closely to typical movie formula. When that rhythm refocuses on what truly makes the movie’s heart beat, namely Tyler’s tragic self-reflection, “The Clovehitch Killer” creates an atypical serial killer thriller with intangibly haunting consequences for its characters and audience alike. Review Score: 80.

The Clovehitch Killer Free stream.nbcolympics. “Your father has his own hobbies. ” Duncan Skiles ’ “The Clovehitch Killer” is a thriller/drama about a teenager who becomes suspicious of a few of his dear old dad’s “hobbies. ” The title refers to a serial killer who murdered at least 10 women a decade ago but has since gone silent. In a small community like the one in which Tyler ( Charlie Plummer, so great in “ Lean on Pete ”) lives with his family, a maniac that violently prolific doesn’t get forgotten and there are still vigils and people in town consumed with figuring out the identity of the madman who may still live in their midst. Tyler’s dad Don ( Dylan McDermott) is a church-going guy who comes off as exceedingly normal. He’s the kind of awkward father who always calls his son “bud, ” over-pronounces anything with more than two syllables, and thinks it’s hysterical to move his arms in a circle when he gives a “round” of applause (Get it?!?! ). And then Tyler’s world collapses. One day, Tyler “borrows” his dad’s truck to sneak out with a girl he likes. Just as his teenage dreams are about to come true, she finds a crumpled-up photo under the seat of a woman in bondage. We know it’s not Tyler’s, but she doesn’t believe him. But the truth is much worse than the rumors that go around school that Tyler is a "perv:" it probably belongs to Tyler’s dad. It's just a photo though. No big deal. But Tyler starts to look at his exceedingly average father in a different way. As Tyler befriends a local girl named Kassi ( Madisen Beaty), who is the town expert on the Clovehitch Killer, named for the knot he used to tie up his victims, he starts to notice more and more things “off” about dad, including the padlocked shed out back in which he spends a bit too much time. One day, Tyler breaks in and finds a few more bondage pics. So, dad is into kinky sex? Who cares, right? But what about the Polaroid of a tied-up woman with the name Nora written on it? Could that be Nora Devlin, one of the killer's victims? The first act of “The Clovehitch Killer” is effective and engaging as a subgenre entry in the common coming-of-age dynamic of a son learning his dad is more complex than he first thought. In this case, murderously more complex. Is Don a serial killer? Tyler can’t bring himself to believe it, and Skiles plays with our own questions about his guilt or innocence for a while. Could Kassi be fueling inaccurate suspicions? The performances here are strong, too, with Plummer deftly selling the internal turmoil that would accompany horrific suspicions against a loved one and McDermott allowing potential darkness to seep through early, making the tension believable. And then Skiles and his writer Christopher Ford start forcing Tyler and Kassi into situations that simply aren’t believable. And they start to pile up, one on top of another, until the movie collapses under their weight. We’re all willing to suspend a little disbelief if a thriller is working, but everyone checks out at a certain point when they no longer find what the characters are doing or saying genuine. Without spoiling much, Tyler finds something that looks really bad and the note I took was simply, “Cops would be called. ” He certainly wouldn’t then go on a camping trip alone with dad. Plummer does the best he can to make his character seem believable but it’s almost as if scenes are missing regarding why he’d be so blindly loyal to someone he thought could be a serial killer. And then “The Clovehitch Killer” really goes off the rails. It takes a drastic POV turn about halfway, answers any lingering questions, and becomes almost an entirely different film. I’m down with thrillers that try to shake up their viewers with turns like this movie takes, but Skiles and Ford don’t land it. In the end, the POV switch feels more like a cheap trick to get to a shocking moment more than anything that dramatically enhances the film. And the fact is that as good as Plummer and McDermott are here, Ford ultimately writes himself into a corner that requires actions in the final act that don’t ring true. Like a clearly guilty man professing his innocence, "The Clovehitch Killer" runs out of excuses.
