“It is with the greatest sadness that we have to report that Dave Greenfield, legendary keyboard player for The Stranglers, passed away on Sunday evening after contracting COVID-19 while in hospital for a heart condition
Dave joined The Stranglers in 1975 just ahead of recording their first album Rattus Norvergicus and releasing their first single “(Get A) Grip (On Yourself)” in January 1977, an early example of his very distinctive and inventive sound. A unique talent in those early days of punk and new wave, his playing marked them out as a band who would outlast many others on the pub and club circuit of that period. The impressive list of singles that followed such as “Peaches”; “Something Better Change”; “No More Heroes”; “Duchess”; and “Strange Little Girl”, as well as the albums which came along every year, including a personal favourite “The Raven”, all bore his trademark innovative genius. He also wrote the band’s biggest hit “Golden Brown” in 1982 which is universally acknowledged as one of the best Number 2 records in UK chart history.
Dave continued to go out on the road with the band throughout their long 45-year career, and they were due to go out on their rescheduled ‘farewell’ tour later this year. Sadly Dave won’t be there, but his brilliance lives on.
All of us at Rhino UK and Global Catalogue send their deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans.”
