The movie is based on a series of popular, if controversial, video games that appeared in the 1990s (originally a Midway arcade game). Kitana should have rolled her eyes instead of going O_O when he said “hope” cause, geez that is some shounen dialogue. Why is it called Scorpion's revenge if it's just the plot of Mortal Kombat 1? Scorpion wasn't the main character and this trailer focuses on everyone. Wow! I was more than pleasantly surprised with this animated movie that completely lived up to all expectations that a Mortal Kombat movie should imply. I never expected this, vividly remembering the traumatic disappointments that previous efforts were (e.g. live action MK movies, Street Fighter movie - well, except for Raul Julia. Jeremy Adams and Rick Morales did a great job in captivating the right tone and atmosphere.
This was much better than the previous MK live action films and very true to the origin backstories of the video games, going all the way back to to the backstory of the original MK I, that captivated so many gamers in the early nineties, including myself. MK is all about gore, ultra violence (and fatalities) so R rating is basically the only way to go to stay true to the franchises core values. Also, a smart choice to focus on a darker (but interesting) character like Scorpion, and lesser on (Mr. Goody Two Shoes) Liu Kang. Gives it more grit and personality, and the right dark mood.
I heard that Ed Boon, one of the original creators was involved as creative consultant, which was a wise decision and paid off in terms of character development. The MK game franchise already created a treasure trove of great material to work with for a translation to film, no need to invent the wheel here.
