- Story: In early-1980s northern Italy, amid the lush Mediterranean landscapes of a serene and golden summer, 17-year-old, Elio, visits the family's summer villa to spend his vacation with his father and Greco-Roman culture professor, Mr Perlman, his translator mother, Annella, and the American doctoral student who works there as an intern, Oliver. But, little by little, over the course of six fleeting weeks, a timid friendship between Elio and Oliver will prepare the ground for an unexpected bond, as the unexplored emotions of first love start boiling over. Just saw this beautiful movie today - and tomorrow I'm buying peaches! p. He should've said something about Michael Stuhlbarg's performance at the end of the film. Seriously moving. I think this is such an interesting breakdown for the film. Its really interesting because I had a COMPLETELY different POV than Chris. I think this film beautifully resonates with the LGBT community and has certain tricks that speak to us specifically, in ways that may not resonate with straight people. For example, Chris says that he felt like the film didnt really lend a lot of info/character development on Elio + Oliver. but as an LGBT viewer, I think the way the director arranged everything was perfect because we were allowed to feel like we were exactly in Elios shoes. In other words, Elio was a canvas for us LGBT folks who fell/wanted to fall in love with an Oliver. The ambiguity, the restraint, and the withdrawals. they (as Chris describes as a sort of “shortcoming” from the director) were the strongest parts for me. I think it was more of a silent nod to LGBT viewers. we resonated strongly with Elio and longed for Oliver, which is why the ending felt so extremely heartbreaking for us LGBT folks.
I don't know if this is just my interpretation of the scene, but when Oliver tells Elio, Don't go anywhere. Stay right here. It's as though Oliver is speaking those words to the part of Elio who is bold, unafraid of telling him how he feels. Oliver already knows Elio isn't going anywhere. Oliver touches his chest twice with his finger and begins to walk away, and as Elio responds You know I'm not going anywhere, he is looking towards the bus, a reminder that Oliver is the one who has to ultimately leave. I wonder if that place really did mix up all of Oliver's pages or if he just lied so he could spend the day with Elio.
Why do people always say Armie is married, he can't fall in love with Timmy. listen, people can fall in love with anyone even if hes married. My friend said he liked me because he felt comfortable for spending some time with me and he told me he fell in love with me even though he was a straight and had a girlfriend. haha that was incredible. His sentence because I wanted you to know comes back into my head again and again during my days. I accidentally was looking at timothee the entire time.
The flies were the last thing on my mind watching this movie weeks after this review was posted- until the final shot.
"Call Me By Your Name" 2017 release from Italy; 132 min.) brings the story of Elio and Oliver. As the movie opens, we are reminded that it is "Summer of 1983" and "Somewhere in northern Italy. We get to know 17 yr. old Elio and his parents, spending time at their summer home in Crema, Italy. Then Oliver, who is a research assistant to Elio's dad (a professor of archaeology) arrives to spend 6 weeks there. Elio shows Oliver around in the local town. To tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.
Couple of comments: this is the latest movie from Italian director Luca Guadagnino, who just a few years ago brought us the excellent "A Bigger Splash" and you can immediately pick up on certain structural similarities between these two films. Here, Guadagnino examines the restless and at times confused state of Elio who, for reasons never made clear, comes around to liking Oliver, a lot. Frankly, I struggled with that. Another thing: am I the only one who raises a question as to the age difference between Elio (whom we know is 17) and Oliver (his age is not disclosed, but I'm guessing, being a research assistant, probably mid-20s, if not older) a significant gap from a 17 yr. old's perspective. But there are plenty of other great things about this movie. First and foremost, having grown up in Belgium (with significant vacation time in the south of France) the movie captures the endless summers of my youth perfectly (I moved to the States in. 1983, the year this movie is set. The bike rides, the meals outside, the laying around in the grass, etc. etc., that is what summer time was like in the late 70s/early 80s. Second, Timothée Chalamet (as Elio) is nothing short of spectacular (on the heels of his smaller role in Lady Bird. While his name sounds French, he is in fact an American, but perfectly bilingual. Third, the production set and photography is pure eye-candy. Last and certainly not least, there is a fabulous soundtrack, with several new songs from Sufjan Stevens that capture the movie's mood just right. No surprise then that when the Oscar nominations were announced today, Call My By Your Name" got 4 of them (Best Movie, Best Actor, Best Adopted Screenplay and Best original Song.
The movie finally went wide this past weekend, and the Friday evening screening where I saw this at was attended very nicely. Bottom line is that there are a number of great things about this movie, but I cannot give it a "perfect" 5 star rating for the reasons I mentioned. That should not stop you from checking out "Call Me By Your Name" be it in the theater, on VOD or eventually on DVD/Blu-ray, and draw your own conclusion.
I'm here cuz I heard Harry Styles was in this. When he said elio elio elio I LEGIT CRIED MY EYES OUT. Elio has no business looking that good just after waking up. Robbed. they should've won more. 2:37 woAH Timothee looks so good here.
