My stance on Star Wars is this:
Return of The Jedi was the perfect ending to the story. Nothing that is set after it time wise in Star Wars canon should have been made (in other words the prequels and KOTOR etc is fine.
That being said since Disney decided to do a cash grab and they made the sequels. Personally I dislike Episode 7 as I feel it is a bland and poor copy of the original trilogy (mainly IV A New Hope.
I hate The Last Jedi as it is a disrespectful mess with "modern" supposed social justice and feminist themes laced throughout it and a very poor story with a near infinite number of plot holes and horribly done characters. I can't really enjoy watching this film.
However since Disney has gone and made these sequels and given the utter mess the canon was left in, I think J.J did an outstanding and excellent job with this film.
It certainly isn't perfect and there are one or two big questions like how did Palatine survive, why is the force is used in some ways never seen before etc. But I think this movie is actually good.
I enjoyed watching this movie and FAR prefer it over Episodes 7 & 8. They have improved:
The characters- there likeable and relatable, and feel more real.
The dialogue is much less cringey and forced.
The humor is actually good.
The story is good.
Character ARCs didn't really happen and weren't really set up in 7 & 8 so this film kind of has to do its own full 3-episode-arcs in one movie, and it does so well.
It fixes the problems with the other sequel films (at least to a degree.
In my opinion it has a great ending.
Overall I would have preferred that the saga be left at Episodes 1-6 and maybe have Rogue One and some good TV shows made etc. But since they have made the sequels I've gone from not caring at all about the characters (in particular Rey) to actually really caring about them and liking them. So well down J.J I personally think you did a great job.
