2:17 to 2:27. Few Marvel films work better than Black Panther tonally and as a stand-alone action film. It's a fantasy adventure and a superhero film but its a story of different themes too - isolationism, revolution, and cultures of oppression, and the notion of what wealthy countries owe to the poor and oppressed. It's these themes that strike a chord.
The battles, so prevalent and perhaps over-emphasised in other Marvel films, do feel like they have slightly more purpose here and don't overcrowd the story.
By no means does Black Panther transcend the action genre but it certainly embraces it in a skilful way. This can be exemplified by the wondrous and plentiful array of costumes, inspiring set design, and different cultural elements which are well-observed and knitted beautifully into the world of Wakanda which has been impressively rendered using CGI. It provides a beautiful backdrop of a near idyll.
However, the characters are not easily distinguishable from the beauty and sweeping majesty of the stage backcloth. The thrust of the story is impeded by the studio's design-by-committee anodyne dialogue. T'Challa, the King, is po-faced and no more interesting for what he says than Captain America and Thor who also lack dimension unless they are in combat. Jordan's villain ignited the film and was suitably threatening - suddenly the film had a spring in its step. Martin Freeman's character was smooth-talking but drab and insincere with a turn of phrase of a freshman, not an airman. Andy Serkis gave us so much promise but left far too early to be controversial. All in all, a good Sunday matinée - it looks fabulous, but it needed to be bolder in its thematic assertions.
